Splitz, file split tool...

Splitz is a free utility for splitting large files into several smaller parts to enable them to be transferred from one computer to another using some form of removeable media, such as floppy or Iomega Zip disks. It is based on an original by Gerald Bonne, but features multithreading to allow you to cancel the split process at any time and has an enhanced user interface on Windows XP.

Click the browse button to locate the file you want to split, or type it's name in the text box.

You then have the choice of entering the size you need the parts to be and allow Splitz to work out how many parts are needed, or you can enter the number of parts and let Splitz work out the size.

You can also choose one of the presets for a particular media type. Select the configuration tab and you have the opportunity to edit the presets or add new ones of your own.

If you expect to rejoin the split file on a DOS machine which does not support long filenames, then you can select the option to use DOS filenames.

Click the 'Go' button to select a destination directory and begin the splitting process. Once complete, a batch file (file with .bat extension) will be created which you can run on the target machine to join the parts back together again.

Configuration

Select the configuration tab to add or edit presets, or change the flavour (colour scheme).

The flavour options allow you to change the look of the program. Vanilla is as you can see here, there's also Strawberry and Banana to choose from.

If you really want to, you can add a new flavour yourself by editing the Splitz.xml file.

For example, to add a chocolate flavour. Add the following line:

<flavour name="Chocolate" colour="Chocolate"/>

You will need to restart the program for the changes to take effect, as the xml file is only read during startup.

The Add, Edit and Remove buttons are used in conjunction with the presets. They allow you to modify the default presets or add new ones of your own. You could, for example, set up a 650MB preset for your CDRW disks.
