Gaffer's Girl

SPEEDY AND THE GNAT

THE SAGA OF SPEEDY AND THE GNAT

AS TOLD BY

SPEEDY’S FRIEND LEGS

To tell you the tale of Speedy and the Gnat,

I’ll begin where beginnings begin.

Speedy the spider came to my nest and sat.

Weaving and shaping a web he did spin.

to cover us from the sun overhead

which Speedy was quick to say he did dread.

Summers in Chicago are humid and hot.

Speedy thought this would help,

But, found it did not!

“I must find a new home.” Poor Speedy did yelp.

“I’m hardly a sun loving fool.

So, I need a place that’s dingy and cool.”

Just then, came a widow in the color raven

who told Speedy of a wonderful haven.

The garage of woman called The Gnat

Was the best possible place to build a web at.

Speedy was warned by me most smartly

To believe the widow only partly.

Gnat could surely put up a fuss

I’d heard she did not like any of us.

Speedy thought she might not mind a guest

As long as the guest arrived looking his best.

Speedy tied his eight tiny brown shoes,

And dressed in his lightening bolt sweater

promising to send me the latest of news

he headed for home said to be better.

Arriving at the Gnat’s, Speedy looked around,

And in this place felt heaven was found.

Speedy thought he’d like this place

If the other spiders would just give him more space.

Speedy squeezed himself in

To a spot just barely there,

right between a metal bin

and a spider with hair.

And there Speedy sat awaiting The Gnat

His high hopes were not dashed.

When the garage door opened

And bright lights flashed.

Gnat departed from her car,

But was never able to get very far

With a cadre of spiders so anxious to greet her.

The next few moments passed in a blur.

The Gnat appeared so overwhelmed with joy

Her squeal could be heard throughout Illinois.

She danced and she whirled

and flung her arms about.

She enjoyed the meeting honestly,

there was no doubt.

Speedy in his desire to stay

Decided it was time to step into the fray.

He knew that Gnat he would need to ask,

But getting to her would be a huge task.

Speedy had knit a glittery thread

And he used it to pivot around her head.

Gnat swung and she swatted

As Speedy flew right on by.

He missed her.  He missed her.

He thought he would cry.

Maybe if lucky, he’d get another try.

Around him the other spiders flew.

Suddenly Speedy’s world was askew

To left and right.  Right and left.

By then Speedy was feeling quite bereft.

The next Speedy knew he was flat on the ground.

And Gnat.  That dear Gnat.

She was no where around.

And spiders were running all across the floor.

Spiders were running right out the door.

At first Speedy thought perhaps he should follow

But right at that moment Speedy did see

“A wonderful, dark hollow

Perfect for a Daddy Long Legs like me.”

To this day he does roost, by Gnat’s heavenly garage seduced.
