Welcome, what you see before you is the newest addition to this
site, which is dedicated to The Lord of the Rings and all things
to do with Tolkien's Middle-earth. This upcoming section will have all
the Valar (and Valier) listed by name, with detailed
information on each one. Many of you who have only read The Lord of the
Rings trilogy, or the Hobbit, will find the information here new and
enlightening, and (hopefully) interesting. Those of you who have read
the Sillmarillion, well, you've allready gotten your information
on the Valar from Tolkien himself. So sit back, enjoy, and be cool.
This page will be finished by sometime September 2006.
The Valar: the Powers of Arda
The Valar, who were first called the Ainur, were the offspring of Eru’s thought. The Valar are seven in number, and the Valier (Queens
of the Valar) are seven as well. Melkor, the rebellious, is not counted
among the Valar. The Ainur, back in the depths of time and space, were
shown a vision by Eru, whom men call Illuvator. The vision was that of
Arda, or “Middle-earth”. Many of the Ainur were filled with a desire to
go and dwell therein, and Eru granted their desire. However, unforeseen
to the Valar, when they entered Arda they found it empty and shapeless,
and they came to know they themselves would be charged with bringing
about the fulfillment of the vision, creating and enriching Arda, all
in their own way and measure. Therefore they labored long and hard, and
all the longer and harder, for Melkor, the enemy, ever and anon would
mar all that they had created. He desired to be Lord of all, and
anything which was not his to call his own he was ever displeased with.
From
the beginning to the end the Valar, that is the Powers of Arda, were
charged with overseeing and caring for all of Arda. They are the ones
behind everything that goes on in Arda, the unseen that see nearly all
things, and work things out according to the will of Eru. Each of the
Valar have different powers and different roles in Arda, different
realms of nature to oversee, different duties to perform and joys to be
had. I will list them briefly below.
