| of Gandalf |
Gandalf was one of the Istari (aka wizards) sent to Middle-earth. He is deemed largly responsible for Sauron's downfall, laboring constantly for nearly 2000 years to end his reign. Gandalf is known by many names in Middle-earth, here are just a few: Incanus, Olorin, Tharkun, LathSpell, Grey Pilgrim, Grey Wanderer, Stormcrow, Greyhame, Mithrandir, Grey Fool, The White Rider. Upon Ariving in Middle-earth, Cirdan the Shipwright gave Gandalf Narya, the Ring of Fire. Hobbits are the race that Gandalf holds closest to his heart, when Bilbo found the Ring Gandalf immdediatly suspected it to be the One Ring, his assumption was soon proved correct. He left the Ring in Bilbo's keeping, knowing that Bilbo's innocense and plain hobbit sense would make him resilient to the Ring's corruptive power. Gandalf convinced Bilbo to leave the Ring to Frodo when he left the Shire to live in Rivendell, and shortly thereafter he set in motion the Quest of Mount Doom. The White Counsel held Gandalf in very hight esteem, he was possibly thier most important member, because Gandalf alone knew the full extent of Sauron's wickedness and possesed the most knowledge of the Ring of Power. Aside from leading and aiding Frodo on his journey to Mount Doom, Gandalf did many other chief deeds, such as releasing Theoden from the spells of Wormtounge, and casting Saruman out of the White Counsel, leading 2000 men to prevent Saruman's Uru-kai from winning the battle of Helms Deep, and also breaking Saruman's staff, leaving him powerless. Gandalf also protected the company of the Ring from the Balrog of Moria, although Gandalf fell while fighting his foe, he was sent back to Middle-earth no longer as Gandalf the Grey, but now as Gandalf the White, making him the head of the wizards instead of Saruman. Eventually, after the War of the Ring, Gandalf sailed from the Grey Havens along with Elrond, Bilbo, and Frodo. He is also believed to have taken Shadowfax, his beloved horse with him. Boromir was the firstborn son of Denethor II. He was a very proud man, proud of himself as well as proud of his city, Minas Tirith. After leading his forces against Sauron at Osgiliath, he travelled to Rivendell to learn the meaning of a dream he shared with his younger brother, Faramir. He accompanied Frodo on the way to Mount Doom, and along with Aragorn can be credited with saving the hobbits on Mount Caradhras by tunneling through the snow after a blizzard and creating a path for them. While in the company of the Fellowship, in the Mines of Moria, he proved himself to be a valiant warrior. Once Boromir discovered that Frodo was carrying the Ring, he eventually was overtaken by the desire to claim the Ring for himself, and he attacked Frodo at Amon Hen in an attempt to take the Ring, which is partly why Frodo decided he must go the rest of the way to Mount Doom alone. Boromir was killed shortly after when he sacrificed himself to save Merry and Pippin from a band of raiding orcs and Uru-kai. Boromir is described as "Tall, having dark hair, grey eyes, as most men of Gondor. Broad and muscular." For more on Boromir, see Detailed Boromir Biography
| Merry |
|
| of Meriadoc Brandybuck |
Merry was a good friend of Frodo, and with the help of Pippin and Sam spied out Frodo's plan to leave the Shire on his trip to Rivendell. Once in Rivendell, like Pippin, Merry was chosen by Elrond, after some encouragement by Gandalf, to join the Fellowship. Merry travelled with the company to Parth Galen, where he and Pippin were taken captive by a host of orcs and Uru-kai. While the Riders of Rohan were attacking the orcs, Merry and Pippin managed to escape into Fangorn Forest, where they met Treebeard, head of Fangorn Forest. Merry along with Pippin played a major role in rousing the Ents, causing them to throw down Sarumans reign in Isengard. Merry rode with Dernhelm to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. He fought very bravely, and played a part in destroying the Witch-King. Merry was almost killed by the black breath of the Witch-King, but was taken to the houses of Healing and healed by Aragorn. After the War of the Ring was over, Merry was made a knight of Rohan, and treated with great honor whenever he returned. He preceded to return to the Shire, and played a major role in the freeing of the Shire of Saruman's ruffians. Upon the death of his father, Meriadoc was made Master of Buckland, and became known as Meriadoc the Magnificent. He did receive approval, after Gandalf encouraged Elrond to let him join the Fellowship of the Ring. Although Pippin made two terrible mistakes, dropping the the stone into the well in Moria, and looking into the Palantir, he far outweighed his mistakes with the heroic deeds he performed, including aiding in the rousing of the Ents, travelling with Gandalf to Gondor, offering his sword in service to the Steward of the city, and stabbing the Witch-King, head of the Nazgul, in the back of the knee. In the battle of the War of the Ring he was narrowly saved by Gimli after being crushed by the body of a huge mountain troll. | of Frodo Baggins |
Frodo was the only son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck. He is described as being "of medium height, with thick brown curly hair. He was not as fat as most hobbits. The Fallohide in him made him lighter skinned then a full-blooded Harfoot." His parents both died in the year 2980, so the wealthy bachelor, Mr. Bilbo Baggins adopted him. When Frodo turned thirty-three, Bilbo departed from the Shire, and left his nephew Frodo with all of his worldly belongings, including the Ring. Frodo journeyed to the town of Bree along with Merry, Pippin, and Samwise Gamgee. There he and his companions met Aragorn, and set out for Rivendell. Along the way he was stabbed by a Morgul Blade, which nearly cost him his life. In Rivendell he volunteered to take the Ring to Mordor, to Mount Doom to be destroyed. With and without the Fellowship Frodo had many heroic adventures. When Frodo finally reached Mount Doom, and was about to cast the Ring into the fire, he claimed the Ring for his own and turned back, but at that same moment Gollum leaped from behind a rock and bit off Frodos finger that he just slipped the Ring on. Gollum stood on the edge of a cliff, held up the Ring with both hands, and started boasting over it, when he slipped on a rock and fell down into the fire. After the War of the Ring Frodo returned home to the Shire, and for a little while became the major of Michel Delving. He was constantly unsattisfied and dejected, he left Middle-earth along with Gandalf and Bilbo, and sailed over the sea to the undying lands of Valinor. | Sam |
|
| of Samwise Gamgee |
Sam was the youngest son of Hamfest Gamgee. He lived a fairly simple and uneventful life until the beginning of his part in the tale of the Ring. Sam, partly because of his love for elves and partly because he overheard too much about the Ring to stay safe at the Shire, was chosen by Gandalf to accompany Frodo along the way to Rivendell. Once in Rivendell, Elrond(after some encouragement by Sam himself)also chose Sam to travel with Frodo to Mordor. Sam played a major role in the destruction of the Ring, and performed many heroic deeds while with Frodo, without Sam the quest would have certainly failed. When Shelob had Frodo caught in her web, Sam slew Shelob, and after thinking that Frodo was dead when he was really unconscious, he saved the Ring from the orcs that came in the cave after Shelob was dead. He then proceeded, with the help of the Ring, to rescue Frodo from enemy hands. At the base of Mount Doom, when Frodo couldn't even crawl, Samwise carried him up to the top, where he could throw the Ring in the fire. After the Ring was destroyed Sam returned home, married Rose Cotton, and had 13 children with her. He was also elected mayor of Michel Delving seven times. After the death of his wife, in the Fourth Age 82, he sailed over the sea to Valinor, the last of the Ring bearers to leave Middle-earth. For more on Samwise, see Detailed Sam Biography |
| Aragorn |
|
| of Aragorn son of Arathorn |
Aragorn, also known as strider, met Frodo and his companions at the Prancing Pony, as they were on thier way to Rivendell, he became thier guide. Frodo and the other hobbits grew very fond of him. He left Rivendell with the Fellowship of the Ring. After Gandalf's fall in Moria he became the companys guide, leading them through many perils. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas then turned toward Isengard in pursuit of the band of orcs that had captured Merry and Pippin. Eventually finding the hobbits in the ruins of Isengard, safe and sound with Tree-beard, he also met up with Gandalf the Grey, now Gandalf the White. Aragorn also fought in the battle of helms deep. He then led a host of men through the "Paths of the Dead" and gathered together a huge army of men to fight for Gondor. Soon after that battle, he took the title of Captain of the West, and rode to Mordor with a host of men to challenge Sauron's might. Shortly after the War of the Ring, he became the King of Gondor, and wedded Arwen Evenstar. During his reign, he restored peace and extended the realm of Gondor. The land of Gondor became more beatiful than ever before under his reign. Aragorn met and instantly fell in love with Arwen when he was twenty years old, but Elrond would not permit a wedding until he had reclaimed his throne. Aragorn is described as having "Ruddy good looks, with a noble appearance. Long black hair, flecked with gray, and quite tall. For more on Aragorn, see Detailed Aragorn Biography
