Dear Mr. Elliott;
I am writing to you as a lover of horses and of the sport of horse-racing, and as founder of the above mentioned organization, “Friends of Equines FOES of Equine Slaughter.”
We were delighted to read today in the Thoroughbred Times about your new “0” policy for owners, trainers and breeders who send their horses to slaughter from your track. We are glad to see that finally, someone from the industry is taking a stand for the horses and against needless slaughter! You are so right when you say equine slaughter is un-necessary because there are so many other options! We are so glad to hear an “industrial” “voice of reason” speaking out against those who use the slaughterhouses as a means of disposing of their “unwanted” horses.
Last week we attended the American Horse Councils National Issues Forum and spoke with a few members there who wholeheartedly agree with you that equine slaughter is a completely un-necessary evil. In speaking with them so, we realize that there are plenty of owners, trainers and breeders that do not believe in slaughter and are committed to “taking care of their own.” It was generally agreed that if everyone in the industry did so, there would be no “unwanted” horse problem.
KUDOS to you Mr. Elliot, for being the first “industrialist” to “come out of the closet” against slaughter. The anti-slaughter horse loving folk have a new hero in you, as do the horses. We commend you on your efforts and hope that many more race tracks and industry men will follow your lead and find alternatives to slaughter. There could be NO better PR for the horseracing industry than to have them take the lead in ending equine slaughter. Thank you for starting it off.
Sincerely,
Christine A. Jubic, Founder,
