Dr. John Boyd, President
The National Black Farmers Association
Dear Dr. Boyd,
I am writing to you as a lover of horses and as founder of the above mentioned organization, “Friends of Equines FOES of Equine Slaughter.”
We were delighted to learn that on June 17, 2008, you and your very worthy organization have teamed up with the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) to develop a “Wanted” Horse Campaign. We have been trying to convince the pro-slaughter folk for years that there is no such thing as an unwanted horse. We are glad to have you with us and to see our anti-slaughter numbers increase. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you aboard the “No Such Thing as an UnWanted Horse - Anti-Slaughter Train!
On the same June 17, 2008 day your organization joined forces with the AWI,....“Friends of Equines” was present at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Washington DC for the American Horse Councils National Issues Forum, standing out front, protesting and waiving our "NO SUCH THING AS AN UNWANTED HORSE" sign. During the SEVEN HOURS that we were waving that sign (among others) we were lucky enough to get to speak to some of the AHC members who came outside to talk to us and pick up some of our brochures. Surprisingly, there were a few AHC members that we spoke with who wholeheartedly agree with us that equine slaughter is an un-necessary evil. In speaking with so many people that day, both in and out of the industry, we have come to realize that it is true, even of some owners, trainers and breeders,.....there are alot of people who simply do not believe in equine slaughter but believe instead, in “taking care of their own.” It was generally agreed that if everyone, espicially those in the industry did so, there would be no “unwanted” horse problems, imagined or real.
Over the years we have witnessed a growing number of anti-horse slaughter supporters. The more people that become educated about the issue, the more our anti-slaughter numbers grow , and they continue to grow daily.
Just recently, there was an article in the Thoroughbred Times about Mr. Samuel Elliott, the VP of Suffolk Downs Racetrack. Apparently, Mr. Elliot is anti-slaughter too as he came out publicly against racehorse slaughter and forbids anyone to send horses to slaughter from his track or they will be permanently banned. You can read the entire article on the "Thank U Mr. Elliott" page of this same website.
Thanks to a conscientious horse-loving public and supporters like yourself and Mr. Elliot, we are actually starting to really believe that some day soon we will have an end to equine slaughter and will get our Congressional Bills HR 503 & S 311 passed!
Once again, welcome to the NO SUCH THING AS AN UNWANTED HORSE - Anti-Horse Slaughter Camp! We are delighted to have you with us.
