Tattooed Memoirs #2(The veil is thin)
By:Sage!
[Sold Out, will not re-stock]
When I received this zine for consideration I took it along with me to the gym and I immediately started reading it and was immediately pleased! In here, Sage writes about what it was like to work in a tattoo studio for the first time and how it is working at one today, how she got the name "shop girl", her love and appreciation for tattoos/piercings, about a stalker she once had at the shop. She continues on writing about how she went to her first tattoo convention and how her and her family were interviewed to be featured in People Magazine. She ends the zine with a piece that made me tear, it's about her good friend who died in a tragic accident. And there's plenty more. I really believe that this is something you shouldn't pass up! "In that four year time period, I assisted piercing every body part imaginable, won trophy's for my tattoo work, became heavily tattooed and featured in various tattoo publications. I felt like I lived in a totally different world than the average person; I guess I still do." $1.00/half-size/14 pages/1 oz.
Tune Out #15
By:Maria
[Sold Out, will not re-stock]
This zine is so cute. Maria mainly writes about her childhood memories and how she misses those times. She writes about the club her and her friends started when they were kids, they called themselves, "the Candy Girls". She writes about the times spent with them, it really is cute. This reminded me of the times when I had lemonade stands and wrote scripts for neighborhood plays. There's a piece on misinterpretation and the outcome of it. She wrote about coming out with her sexuality and what her parents thought about it. Then, she tells you about how she joined the gym and why she did. In all, it's quite enjoyable! "We would scream down the street, "Lemonade only 25 cents!" The neighbours would come to our little lemonade stand and tell us to be quiet..we thought it was hilarious." $1.00/1/4-size/22 pages/1 oz.
Vena Cava #6
By:Patsy
After I finished up reading this zine, I let out a big sigh, not a bad sigh, but a sigh of relief. Reading this zine made this feeling come over me, you know the "you're not alone" feeling and it felt really good, actually. Patsy has a way with words, it's inspiring and heart warming. And let me tell you, she is one fierce girl! In the beginning she explains, "This is a collection of writing that happened after everything was over. It was my dad dying, graduation, coming home to Alaska, sleeping all the time at first, working through the night, sitting in the bus stop with my camera waiting for the beautiful moments, serving the same assholes who were drunk the night before coffee in the morning, making money by playing music, and last call sick of it all." She continues on writing about the ghosts that roam her house, a conversation she had with an ex-stripper, jerks she had to deal with at her job, her dad's death, working at a bar, self-discovery, seeing the psychologist, being on anti-depressants for a month. She also includes her summer booklist. And also includes two pages of zine reviews. And so much more! It was fast-pace and quite text-heavy, which is quite the combo! "I kept looking at the creek and thinking about how much we bullshit ourselves. How I didn't use to have the confidence to speak my truth and know the difference between false words and those spoken from the heart. It feels like something you wake up with the morning you lose the person you loved most in this world."
$1.00/half-size/37 pages/2 oz.
Voluntary Transaction #5
By Ami
[Sold out, will try to re-order!]
Each zine is bounded with silky green ribbon. The intro to this zine pretty much reminded me of the 2 year relationship I was in. In here Ami writes about losing a fiancee, everything sex, a rant about not being able to orgasm, dealing with a friend who has schizophrenia, her grandparents and their language(and more!). The last piece is about a friend who was severely burned. The length of this zine is pretty much close to perfect. Check out Ami's other great zine "Garage Sale Puzzle Pieces". Warning:may be triggering. "I got horny one day a few months after we broke up and somehow lured him over to my house when mother was at work, I totally seduced him; I knew that he was a big dork and that he wouldn't be getting laid for a while. I got him naked and then said, "I don't really want to do this. I don't think it's a good idea." $1.00/1/4 size/22 pages/1 oz.
What's Her Deal? #1
By Samantha
What's Her Deal is done by my dear friend, Sam. In the intro she states that the zine was made in hopes of meeting people she can relate to because there is lack of that in where she resides. First, I have to say I just love the rawness to the layout, I love that rough cut n paste style, very nostalgic. I also love how Sam lets you in on her love for the pop culture in a shameless manner. In this issue she specifically writes about her love for magazines, having to go on medication, her BF Mark(who she's been with for 5 years), Gilmore Girls(!!!), mixtapes and more. She also included a contest(something I've always wanted to do in my zine) and a how-to on making a tambourine! And there's so much more. This zine was very nostalgic for me, it reminds me of how most zines looked when I first started reading them, which is a wonderful thing! "I can easily spend about $40 on magazines alone. It's sick...In highschool when the library discarded old magazines, you bet your ass I was there to take them home. I didn't care that I had to lug them in a backpack on my 30-minute walk home. I couldn't wait to see all the pages and start new art projects."
$1.00/half-size/38 pages/1 oz.
What's Her Deal? #2
By Samantha
Woo! Another issue of What's Her Deal(?)! This is definitely a bang for a buck! There's just so much to read up on and the subject change is constant and I like that. I just dig Sam's personal tone in her writing and it totally shines in this issue. In here she writes about a sex scandal at her former highschool, her love for VH1, a piece on why alcohol can never be her friend, reasons as to why she doesn't want children, being a woman/self-image, her childhood friend(super cute!), her story about working at a thrift store and she also included another contest! And there's just so much more she wrote about, but I won't give it away. This is definitely my favorite issue, so far. "I get all my celebrity news on VH1. They keep me up to date on all of the bratty teens who are dancing on tables and getting pissed. I want to know how orange Lindsey Lohan is getting. Okay, maybe not, but you get what I mean. With all the sadness and horrendous things that are going on in the world, I feel I need to just sit down and giggle and obsess over something trivial. It makes me feel better, if only for a minute."
$1.00/half-size/42 pages/1 oz.
Welcome to Ninjo-Jinya
By:Waverly
First off, I have to say that this is quite the eye candy. It was filled with so many beautiful photographs, from vintage typewriter to graffiti to etc., it's all really aesthetically grand! There are also some journal entries to top it all off, it's the cherry on top! I'm not even sure how to really review this zine, you just have to see it! "We stole 2 bottles of Absolut and a bottle of Grey Goose. Then, we ran off to the bathroom and attempted to drukenly lock ourselves in the stall. We were having a grande-ole time toasting away at our victories then the manager came into the bathroom and interrupted our party.."
$1.00/half-size/26 pages/1 oz.
You're Insane Honey:Preface
By Lisa
This was a cute little read by Lisa. In here she writes about random thoughts that amuse her these days. It's enjoyable free-form prose. There is a constant subject change, so I simply can't list everything she writes about, but I'll list a few: popart, Los Angeles, her boyfriend, unhealthy relationships, sexual assault, cunt empowerment, and about her attendance at Coachella & more! By the way the layout was quite a treat as well, some parts of the zine were actually color copied. Plus, if you order this zine, you get a free "You're Insane Honey Distro" button! "This morning I just stood there in front of the mirror with an inept sense of balance. Flared emotions with a shaky heart. He was sleeping there in my bed. He's so foreign to me. Met him last night. Hell, if I know what happened. I suppose it was at the local liquor store. Quite the romantics, no?"
$.75/1/8 size/46 pages/1 oz.
You're Insane Honey:Purest Love
By Lisa
This zine was purely devoted to the 9 people in the world that mean the most to Lisa. The form of this zine is basically she wrote about the person, then alongside there's a picture by the description, which gives it a more personal touch. In the beginning she explained that this was the most personal zine she's put out & I can agree with that simply because she really gets into describing these people by bringing up little moments & such in, you know, details. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, you get the newest style of the "You're Insane, Honey" button along with this zine. "This year reflected a lot of my flaws and how I can be the most shittiest person you can depend on. The sloth side of me has taken over. There have been many faces on my face, it's difficult to keep track of them. It's difficult to morph them all into one."
