For people who dont know who we are this page should give you some idea as to what Airdrie United is about and we'll try and tell you about the history and tradition of Airdrieonians and Airdrie United.
Before May 1st 2002 a club by the name of Airdrieonians F.C were a big name in Scottish Football and made there first appearence in 1878, the year they were founded. A club which later died but still have a very intresting past and memories such as playing in Europe in 1992 against Sparta Prague and losing only 3-1 on aggregate, or Scottish Cup champions in the year 1924 or more memorable to people younger as challenge cup champions against Livingston and Alloa. But things were to turn sour later as the club went down the path of administration and sadly later went down the more depressing route of Liquidation on that sad day of May 1st 2002.
Things finished up and Airdrieonians went into liquidation but at this point Clydebank Football Club was up for sale and a businessman well respected by Airdrie fans, who goes by the name of James W Ballantyne came in and gave the town of Airdrie new hope as he bought over Clydebank FC and changed the team to Airdrie United, due to legal reasons he wasn't allowed to rename them as Airdrieonians FC, but it has been roumered by some supporters that there are plans to change it back to Airdrie FC but as I say these are only roumours and who knows what will really happen. Our job as fans is to support the team regardless of it being called Airdrieonians or Airdrie United. The new team of Airdrie United is already thriving with success in there first season in the Bells Second Division the finished 3rd placed missing out on promotion literally by a whisker! The following season the business was done as Airdrie United finished top of Bells Division Two by a gap of eight points between ourselves and Lanarkshire second placed rivals Hamilton. The Airdrie United team also appeared in the final of the Bells Challenge Cup unfortunately we lost that game two nil to last years Division One Champions Inverness Caledonian Thistle who are now surviving three places above relgation in the top flight league otherly known as the Bank of Scotland Scottish Premier League. Airdrie United's main aim this season is to consolidate and they are doing that just and no more by sitting in 8th place in the most competitive league in Scotland. The Bells Division One Championship. My views, hopes and plans are that Airdrie will go up to the SPL in the next 5 years and hopefully stay there as long as possible. Airdrie has a few negative stories throughout its financial history, But I believe it is a very strong club and we are going places. I am proud to be part of the experience!
Hopefully my short paragraphs on our on successful history will have taught you something about the tradition of a thriving town and club. I have now listed below some of the key information that you may need if you are thinking of reading more about Airdrie.
The Stadium
We do not own our stadium. When Airdrieonians FC went into liquidation KPMG, the liquidators, sold our stadium to a mistery company and the club rents it each week for us to play our home games at. It is a state of the art all seater stadium with a capacity of over ten thousand and also has corporate boxes and a conference centre within it. The Excelsior has been the home of Airdrieonians and Airdrie United since 1998 which was also the year Airdrie knocked Celtic out the third round of the cup with that superb Marvellous Marvyn goal in 98!. The previous home of Airdrie was called broomfield and this was knocked down. I unfortunately never had the pleasure of seeing old broomfield before it was knocked down to make way for Safeway.Old Broomfield was quite close to the main rail line into Airdrie and I always make my way to the games via a train and I still feel sad and have a tear at my eye when I pass what was one of the nicest stadiums in Scotland. But once again due to SFA ground regulation and killing a great atmosphere we had to move to our new home. The Excelsior.
