I studied Classics and English before obtaining a Maîtrise in French Stylistics and a Ph.D. in French Literature (Grenoble 1974) and lectured in Higher Education in Nigeria, France and the UK for the past forty+ years.
A former Professor from the
A specialist in Comparative Literature, with special interest in African Literatures and Cultures (Igbo, Nigeria), Nigerian films (Nollywood) and Ethnolinguistics, I am the author of several books including the first standard Igbo-French dictionary (Karthala 2004, with P. Okafor), three books on Igboland and the Nigerian Civil War, a book on Nollywood, two co-edited books on African orality and two edited collections of Igbo folktales. I also published more than hundred book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals in France, Belgium, Britain, Italy, Spain, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several African Countries.
A Research Fellow at the Open University and an external regular collaborator to the CNRS-LLACAN, (Paris), with research links with INALCO (Paris), I am a Senior Research Fellow, IFRA (Nigeria), a member of several professional Societies including The Africanist Society (Paris), APELA (France). and the Higher Education Academy. I am on the Council of APELA, have been a correspondent for the Dakar Senghor Foundation journal for years, and am a regular reviewer for several learned journals. I am currently an external examiner and assessor of PhDs on Nigerian literature and cinema.
My pioneering work in the field and my longstanding contribution to the strengthening of cultural and educational ties between France and Nigeria awarded me the national distinction of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques in 1994.
