Franciscans in the Desert

A community of prayer and worship in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi

Franciscans in the Desert

This site is moving to:

http://desertsanctuary.webs.com

Please visit us there,

May God Bless you.

We are a non-denominational religious order of women and men who are drawn to the Franciscan way of life. Our hope for this site is that we might contact other brothers and sisters in Christ who are seeking God and desiring to live the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in the tradition of St. Francis.

You are listening to "All Creatures of Our God and King", words are by St. Francis.  You may turn off the music by clicking on the audio button at bottom of page

                    Prayer of St. Francis
       O Lord,
       Make me an instrument of Your peace;
       Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
       When there is injury, pardon;
       Where there is doubt, faith;
       Where there is despair, hope;
       Where there is darkness, light;
       And where there is sadness, joy.
       Grant that I may not so much seek
       To be consoled as to console;
       To be understood, as to understand,
       To be loved as to love;
       For it is in giving that we receive,
       It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
       And it is in dying
       That we are born to eternal life.

Mission to the Animals of God's Creation

    We are involved in animal rescue and other ministry involving God's creatures.

St. Francis viewed animals as his Brothers and Sisters, and we recognize our responsibility to care for and protect them.

Animals were created, not only for humans, but to glorify God.

Please see our Animal Mission page for more details.

O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, our little brothers to whom Thou hast given this earth as their home in common with us.

May we realize that they live not for us alone, but for themselves and for Thee, and that they love the sweetness of life even as we, and serve Thee better in their place than we in ours.

           - St. Basil the Great, 370 A.D.

Quotes from the Desert Fathers & Mothers

Abba Joseph asked abba Nisteros, 'What should I do about my tongue, for I cannot control it?' The old man said to him, 'When you speak, do you find peace?' He replied, 'No.' The old man said to him, 'If you do not find peace, why do you speak? Be silent, and when a conversation takes place, prefer to listen rather than to talk.'                            From Daily Readings with the Desert Fathers
