"music is moonlight in the gloomy night of life"

Lately I've been thinking the world lives in twos
Each half of something powerful, the way we are
Complete in ourselves but combining with others
With unrivalled strength, but it doesn't come to all
Some of us aren't living as one of two.
They are one of one.
I've heard them speak of the power of one
But alone at night behind the bedsheet veils
Their daylight mask is stained by tears
I wonder, is being one of one really that powerful?
In your supermarket checkout queue
They'll buy dinner for one but wine for three
And the next morning? Regrets for the world.
It isn't easy being alone
While beyond the window today's Adams and Eves
Entangle fingers and salt the wounds
So perfectly and effortlessly
But if we are not what we are, if being alone is incompletion
At least it's being one, and not zero.
Because no matter how you look at it,
No matter how many times you count,
A hundred times zero is still nothing.
