Top Five 2009 Prospects
Some things just happen every season, so what can we absolutely count on coming into the 2008 season?
5.) Tim Tebow- QB Florida Gators
- Most definably the top quarterback prospect of the draft. Tebow has the size, power, and accuracy to go top three, possibly even number one in this year’s draft. Tebow was awarded the highly regarded Heisman trophy in 2007 for his spectacular season. He won with an astonishing 492 votes, second place being running back Darren McFadden with 291 votes. His attributes and qualities can be compared to Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlishberger, who just earned a contract over 100 million dollars. He is a pure athletic freak, and would be a huge upgrade through the draft for a team in need. Tebow used a system similar to what Urban Meyer used at Utah, where Alex Smith was when he was drafted number one overall to the San Francisco 49ers in 2005. Whether his 2008 performance will be great or not, right now he remains a top five prospect for the 2009 Draft.
4.) Malc
olm Jenkins- CB Ohio State
- I had Malcolm going to the New Orleans Saints in my Mock Draft a couple months ago, up until he came out and stated he would remain in college another year. Never the less, he seems to be the top corner coming out of the Draft in 2009. He has all the intangibles to be a true shut down corner. The six foot one 201 pound corner is a two time all big ten selection, and was even listed in the Top 10 “scariest defenders” listed by Rivals.com. His 4.3 speed makes him even more dangerous, and teams would be very wrong to even test him on his side. Expect him to go Top 10 for sure in this coming draft, possibly even top five depending on team needs.
3.) Michael Johnson- DE/OLB Georgia Tech
- Johnson has decided to stay another year with the Yellow Jackets, hoping to increase his draft status. He has recorded 10 sacks in his career with Georgia Tech, and that total may double in his senior campaign. Johnson has all the tools to become a dominate pass rusher in the NFL, and if he picks up his game that very well may happen. He’ll have to improve his game against the run in order to be an all around elite defensive end, but his decision to stay in school may play a big role in improving his game. He is very athletic, and should be a very high pick in the 2009 Draft. See him as a Vernon Gholston type of player, with the ability to play both defensive end and linebacker.
2.) Michael
Oher- OT Ole Miss
- I think his picture says enough about his beastly image. With offensive tackles being highly regarded the past few seasons in the draft, expect Oher to be selected very high in 2009. Jake Long went to Miami number one last season, and Joe Thomas went number three to Cleveland in 2006, and this prospect has much of the similar traits to both. Oher has excellent feet and large massive power to be a true wall at the left tackle spot. He played guard two seasons ago, but was then moved to tackle and showed great results. He is a quarterback’s best friend, and should be a solid starter when he transfers into the pro level.
1.) Michael Crabtree- WR Texas Tech
- Crabtree didn’t take long to dominate at a college level, setting numerous records and awards in only his freshmen year. In his first start, he had 12 receptions for 106 yards and three touchdowns. He ended up with 134 receptions for 1962 yards and 22 touchdowns. I know, simply amazing for only a freshman. This season he will complete his sophomore year, and it is hard to imagine him surpassing any of those stats, only due to them being down right incredible. He is even a bigger freakish talent than Calvin Johnson, the number two overall selection in the 2007 Draft by the Detroit Lions. One NFL team will be extremely lucky to have his presence on the field, and he will surely be a top pick next year.
