FOOD NOT BOMBS is a voluntary organisation dedicated to non-violence and active peace. Each group recovers food that otherwise would be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served to anyone in city parks, at protests and to the homeless.

Free Food? If distributed equally the world produces enough food to feed everyone. In fact the US every day in every city far more edible food is thrown out than is needed to feed those who do not have enough to eat. Before food reaches your table it is produced and handled by farmers co-ops, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers. At every step some perfectly edible food is discarded for a variety of business reasons.

An average city approximately 10%!! of all solid waste is food. In the US alone 46 billion pounds of food per year is discarded. Only 4 billion pounds of food per year would be required to completely end hunger in the US. Clearly there is an abundance of food being thrown away. It seems we do not have a democratic say in how food is produced or distributed. Business dictates how food reaches the people.

What Kind of food ? FnB encourages vegetarianism. If more people were vegetarian and demanded organically grown locally produced foods this would encourage organic farming practises and support smaller farms. This in turn would make it easier to decentralise the means of food production and democratise the control over the quality of food produced and stewardship of the land. Vegetarianism is better for the environment consumes fewer resources and is healthier for us. It also creates a standard of good food for Food Not Bombs.

Not Bombs ? FnBs plays a part in the struggle for progress by providing food for marchers and campaigners at protests and events whenever possible. Volunteers have provided free food for many protests and environmental social events around Ireland for the past few years.

6 Reasons to avoid McDonalds (and most fast food joints).

1. PROMOTING UNHEALTHY FOOD - High in fat, salt, additives and tastes crap.
2. EXPLOITING WORKERS - Low wages, no union, allows illegal underage late night shift working.
3. USURPING THE POOR - Buys large tracts of land in poor countries for cash crops.
4. DAMAGING THE ENVIRONMENT - Cutting down trees to rear beef and unnecessary wastful packaging.
5. MISTREATING ANIMALS - Intensive farming for profits not animal welfare.
6. CENSORSHIP - Use PR and expensive lawyers to cover up details of their business practices.
7. POOR QUALITY FOOD - Quality of food preperation and meat varies greatly for place to place.

Why is McDonalds singled out?
They have spent a lot money and gone to great lengths to hold back information about their practices (business and food) and they have pioneered many of the business practices that many other companies have followed.

Alternatives

Start looking at the labels on food, unfortunately you can't trust most shops to provide quality and safe food.

Volunteers have provided free food for many protests and environmental and social events around Ireland for the past years.
