Lesson 2: Holding an Object

Alright class today we cover how to fly while holding an object.

Now this is a simple thing to do but it’s something you have to get used to. The problem with holding objects is that it adds weight to one side that you have to compensate for. Now, everyone on your brooms and get up in the air.

*flies to join students*

Ok, I have with me a Quaffle, the key ball in any game of Quidditch. It’s decently heavy but not too heavy to not be able to throw easily. Now, if you look at my position on the broom I have my body from the waist up slightly to the left to compensate with the ball on the right. Now, if I have my body perfectly normal you’ll notice that I start falling to the right *starts to tip right*.

Flying is about balance. *Passes the ball to the person to his right* Pass that around and feel how its weight creates a difference in your hover position.

*waits for the ball to get passed all around*

Alright now if you look down there you’ll see I have set up a few posts all of which have a Quaffle on them. On my whistle I want you to fly down, grab the ball while flying, and bring it back up here to a hover position. You’ll notice it’s a lot harder to fly upwards while holding an object because if you’re not careful you’ll start rotating or going in a different direction.

Now if you think your having a problem just tell me and I’ll set up the ball again for you.

*Waits for whole class to get it*

All right that was very good. Now if you see over there *points in a different direction* there are some dummies set up. Our next task is to learn how to carry another person on our broom.

*Flies down and grabs a dummy*

What you want to do is have the person directly in front of you with your hands wrapped around them to hold onto your broom. This may seem a bit awkward I’m sure, but if you ever are in the situation that you need to have a passenger, it’s the only way to fly them. If you have the person behind you, you will lose balance and the broom will have too much weight on its back end.

You will also have to compensate for the weight, but unless they are carrying something they too should be balanced with the broom. You will not be able to reach top speed, but that would be risky anyway.

Now on my whistle fly down, grab person, position them on your broom and fly them over to the Quaffle section and drop them off. Once you’ve done that you can leave the broom and take off. I’ll give you guys an easy day today..
