For starters, the owner needs to be doing A LOT of research before they even consider buying a glider. If you've been conned by flea market or pet store sellers into thinking that gliders are easy to care for, then know that you've been lied to. But don't worry; lots of people who got tricked into buying gliders have turned out to be great owners- but beware. That glider you bought from Perfect Pocket Pets or a local flea market is the product of breeding for profit, and may be sick or weak, and is certainly unfit for breeding. Please buy from a responsible small-scale breeder who is knowledgeable and will help you throughout the life of your glider. If they own more than 4 breeding females, they should be USDA licensed, and either way should regularly take their gliders in for vet checks. Reputable breeders often register their gliders with the PSG Database or The Pet Glider Pedigree Program in order to keep track of the gliders' lineages to prevent inbreeding. If you are new to gliders, or even if you aren't, I strongly recommend visiting GliderCentral.net. There you will find a wealth of information, and lots of caring people to help you and your gliders. Beware that some of the people there are a bit overzealous, but they mean well, so don't be scared! Don't be afraid to ask questions, because the health of your glider may depend on it! I also have a home phone number for my vet, so if you have an emergency and cannot get a hold of a glider-experienced vet (please get it to an emergency vet either way!), you can contact me and I will see what she says. I have had a situation like this before, and it is terrible to watch your glider suffer because the e-vets do not know the dosages for pain medications. That is why I am now encouraging EVERYONE to obtain their exotic vet's home phone number. Your glider's life may one day depend on it.
