This year is the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of
Charles Wesley,a great poet and hymn-writer, who composed over 7,000 hymns.
Poetry whether that simply be the words of a poem, or a song
or hymn can affect us in many ways.
These are not just words that we read, or hear for as we read
them, or hear them, or sing them they touch our hearts and our imaginations;
they quicken our senses.
Flowers too, affect not just our sense of sight; we smell them,
they bring back memories (perhaps of a warm summer garden, or a bright spring
day) and they open our hearts and minds to so many experiences.
So how appropriate that this year we allow all our God-given
senses to be touched by our flower arrangements as they portray for us the
world of verse.
Last year I mentioned a Flower Arrangers Prayer, written by
Leslie Mitchell of Chandlers Ford in Hampshire.
Several people have asked me to repeat it, which I am happy to do:
May God grant that our hearts, our eyes,
and our hands may receive his inspiration, enabling us to glorify His House
with the beauty of the leaves and blossoms which He has created.
May God bless you, as you enjoy this Festival of Flowers.
