From the Israeli Media: The Use of Antioxidants against Heart Disease

Professor Aviram´s articles are published in the most eminent journals in the world. Hereunder is a summary of an article published in 2005.

Heart disease is the main cause of death in the world. Elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood are a principal cause of heart disease because cholesterol deposits in the arteries and clogs them up. According to Professor Aviram, while there is an awareness that high levels of cholesterol lead to cardiovascular diseases such as a heart attack and a stroke, most people are not aware of the fact that cholesterol quality, and not just its level, is a crucial factor for diseases. A third of all patients that go to the hospital because of a heart attack have normal levels of cholesterol in the blood but their cholesterol is "damaged".

In biochemistry, damaged cholesterol is called oxidized cholesterol. People are constantly exposed to various processes, such as smoking, chemicals, viruses and bacteria, which oxidize cholesterol as well as other substances in the body. Oxidation changes the composition of cholesterol and other molecules. Therefore, as opposed to non-oxidized cholesterol, oxidized cholesterol deposits on the arterial walls, even though its level is completely normal. Furthermore, in patients with high levels of cholesterol, cholesterol tends to oxidize much more since it stays in the body for a longer period of time. Hence, Professor Aviram indicates that prevention or treatment of this phenomenon requires certain substances, called antioxidants, which will hold back the oxidation process in cholesterol, as well as in other lipids, and in other substances in the body, such as proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acid. These have been found to be linked with diseases such as cancer, skin disease and eye problems when oxidized. It has been recently discovered that oxidation processes in the body are associated with hearing loss.

Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables, mostly in their skin and seeds. There are three groups of antioxidants: Vitamin E (most common in oils such as olive oil), Carotenoids (carrots, tomatoes and spinach) and Flavonoids, the most active antioxidants in nature. Studies conducted by Professor Aviram have shown that Flavonoids are highly effective against oxidation processes and the development of arteriosclerosis, a disease which may cause a heart attack and a stroke. These antioxidants were found in licorice root, red wine and pomegranate juice. The experiment on red wine was based on a consumption of two glasses a day for a period of two weeks. In 1995, Professor Aviram and his colleagues published their findings showing that red wine, which is rich in flavonoids found in grape´s skin, has anti-oxidation attributes in humans.

However, since red wine contains alcohol, it is not to be consumed by everyone so his crew searched for other fruits and vegetables which contain highly active antioxidants. According to him, it has been found that pomegranate juice contains such antioxidants and even certain others which are unique to pomegranates alone. As a result of this discovery, in 2000, a first article was published on how pomegranate juice protects the human body against oxidation processes. Their study was exceptional because it has been conducted on human beings whereas other researches in this field were laboratory tests.

In a four-year research which was published two months ago, the professor and his colleagues showed that when patients whose arteries are clogged up, had drunk pomegranate juice, a substantial reduction in cholesterol oxidation and in the size of clogging of the arteries occurred, as measured in ultrasound. One can say pomegranate juice can simply open clogged up arteries. On the other hand, patients who had not been given pomegranate juice had a 10% increase in the size of their arterial clogging throughout the year. These findings have important repercussions according to Professor Aviram. Therefore, a research which includes hundreds of patients is currently being held in order to be sure of the effectiveness of pomegranate juice on a large scale. The first study has been conducted only on ten patients.

Another research studied the effect of olive oil on cholesterol oxidation processes in humans and found there is a significant reduction in oxidation levels, but the problem with consumption of oils is their high amount of calories. In a research on carotenoid antioxidants, it has been found that the combination of vitamin E and Lycopene, the pigment which gives the tomato its red color, has an anti-oxidation effect on cholesterol. In view of these various studies, it is highly recommended to follow a diet which contains these different antioxidants, and in particular flavonoid antioxidants whose effectiveness has been proven to be the highest of all antioxidants.

These can be found in high concentration in the following products, sorted in descending order: pomegranate juice, red wine, licorice root, onion, nuts, ginger and olive oil. The most recommended to consume from carotenoids are tomatoes, carrots and spinach. Vitamin E antioxidants are found in olive oil and food supplements. According to Professor Aviram, the results of the licorice root research and the success in extracting the substance place the licorice-based supplement at the top of the antioxidants pyramid. Moreover, the natural substances found in pomegranate juice and in red wine are inadequate for treating every person. Extracting the active substances from pomegranate juice or red wine for use of treatment is where research is headed, as stated by Professor Aviram.

It is generally perceived that men suffer from cardiovascular diseases more than women do. The following article indicates that women suffer from this problem as well, and sometimes even more substantially.

Heart Attacks in Women

Heart disease claims many women´s lives. Israeli men are in a better position regarding heart illness, whereas heart attack is the third most common cause of death of women. Furthermore, it is much more difficult to diagnose the symptoms of a heart attack in women. Women complain about indistinct symptoms like weakness, fatigue, nausea and stomachache while doctors expect specific symptoms such as angina pectoris and pains in the left arm. Moreover, they react differently than men do in stress tests, which do not accurately reflect their condition. Women tend to suffer from a heart attack resulting from complications such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They are prone to suffer from a severe heart attack and do not respond well to invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization. Family doctors and emergency doctors should be more empathetic to women who complain about feeling unwell.
