The Monte Carlo

Crochet with Gimp: The Monte Carlo, Raphael Brand Gimp, 1938



MATERIALS: 6 tubes "Raphael Brand" Gimp, slide fastener [zipper], lining, bone ring for handle.

STITCH: Use single crochet, double crochet, and popcorn stitch throughout. (NOTE: Pick up both loops for single crochets and back loop only for double crochets and popcorn stitches.)

POPCORN STITCH: Ch 1, 5 double crochets in same stitch, remove hook from loop, insert hook back into first stitch made and draw loop through the stitch on hook, ch 1 to hold stitch.

TO START: Ch 76, turn.

1st row: Make 1 sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.

2nd to 6th row: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row, ch 1, turn. (Ch 3 to turn at end of 6th row.)

7th row: Make 1 pc st in second st of previous row, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st. * 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st and repeat from * to end of row, ch 1, turn.

8th row: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row (75 sts), ch 3, turn.

9th to 14th row: Work same as 7th and 8th rows.

15th row: Make 1 dc in second st of previous row and in each of the next 4 sts, * 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 9 sts and repeat from * to end of row, ch 1, turn.

16th row: Make 1 sc in each st of previous row, ch 3, turn.

17th to 22nd row: Work same as 15th and 16th rows.

23rd to 30th row: Work same as 7th and 8th rows.

31st to 38th row: Work same as 15th and 16th rows. End off. Make other side of bag to correspond. Join both sides with sl sts on wrong side. Sew in lining and slide fastener 1/2" from top.

LOOP FOR RING: Make 9 rows of 4 sc's on one end. Ch 1 at each turn. Insert bone ring and sl st together.
