Embroidered Mittens
from Ten Things to Crochet, Woman's Day, October 1948

MATERIALS: For medium size: Knitting worsted, 3 (1-ounce) balls of tan, scraps of green, blue, pink for the cuff trimming, and a variety of colors (see chart) for the embroidery; plastic crochet hook, No. 5.
GAUGE: 5 sts measure 1"; 4 rows measure 1".
LEFT MITTEN: BACK OF HAND: Starting at wrist edge on little finger side, ch 45.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to within last 3 ch, skip next ch, 3 half dc in next ch (shell made), half dc in next ch. Ch 2, turn.
2nd row: Skip next 2 half dc, working in front loop only, 3 half dc in next half dc (shell over shell), half dc in each sc across, 2 half dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Continuing to work in front loop only, 2 sc in first half dc, sc in each half dc across to shell, shell over shell, half dc in turning ch. Ch 2, turn.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until 7 rows are completed.
8th row: Shell over shell, half dc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 half dc - to dec 1 half dc, work off 2 half dc as 1 half dc. Ch 1, turn.
9th row: Dec 1 sc - to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc - sc in each half dc across, shell over shell. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat 8th and 9th rows alternately until 13 rows are completed. Break off. Make another piece the same way.
THUMB: Starting at tip, ch 2.
1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2nd rnd: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times.
3rd rnd: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times. Work straight until 9 rnds in all are completed.
Now work in rows as follows:
1st row: Ch 2, working in back loop only, half dc in first sc and in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Continuing to work in back loop only, sc in each half dc, decreasing 1 sc at beginning and end of row. Ch 2, turn.
3rd row: Half dc in each sc across, decreasing 1 half dc at beginning and end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until 2 sts remain. Break off.
Place front and back pieces together and with green whip together, leaving a 2 1/2" opening for thumb. Sew thumb in place.
CUFF: Attach blue at wrist edge, *3 half dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
2nd rnd: Attach pink to first ch-1 sp, ch 2, 3 half dc in same sp, *ch 2, 3 half dc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. Attach green to first sp, ch 2, 3 half dc in same sp, 3 half dc in each sp around. Join and break off.
RIGHT MITTEN: Same as left mitten, with the thumb sewed in at the right seam to fit right hand.
Embroider backs according to chart. Trace design on piece of white tissue. Baste this tracing to the back of mitten. With sewing thread do a running stitch through traced lines and into the mitten back. Tear off paper. Follow running stitch thread lines with embroidery. (See diagrams for the outline and satin stitch used.) Remove sewing thread lines.
