MATERIALS: 3-ply fingering yarn, 8 (1-ounce) skeins of cocoa brown for size 12 or 14, 9 skeins for size 16; 7/8 yard of matching 1" grosgrain ribbon; knitting ribbon, 1 spool of black; plastic crochet hook, No. 5; 10 hooks and eyes.

GAUGE: 4 sts measure 3/4"; 2 rows measure 5/8".

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS:
SIZES: 12 14 16
Bust 32" 34" 36"
Width across back at underarm 16" 17" 18"
Length from shoulder to lower edge in front 21" 22" 23"
Length from shoulder to lower edge in back 19" 20" 21"
Length from underarm to lower edge 14" 14 1/2" 15"

BACK: Starting at lower edge with fingering yarn, make a chain 22" long.

Ist row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, *dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 15" (16", 17") ending with 2 dc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: *Sc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with 2 dc. Ch 1, turn.

3rd row: Work off 2 sts as 1 st (1 st decreased); continue across row in established pattern making sc's over dc's below and dc's over sc's below. Ch 3, turn.

Now continue in pattern making a decrease at the beginning of each row until piece measures in all 5 1/2" (5 3/4", 6"). Keeping continuity of pattern as established, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every 3/4". Work in pattern until piece measures in all 12 3/4" (13 1/4", 13 3/4").

To Shape Armholes: Sl st across 4 sts (4 sts decreased), work in pattern across to within last 4 sts (4 more sts decreased). Continue in pattern, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every row until 12 sts have been decreased on each side (24 sts in all). Now work in pattern without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 7" (7 1/2", 8").

To Shape Shoulders: Decrease 10 (10, 7) sts at both ends of next 2 (2, 3) rows. Break off.

RIGHT FRONT: Starting at lower edge make a chain 6" long and work across chain in pattern as for back for 4 1/2" (4 3/4", 5"). Cut off remaining chain. Continue in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of each row until 8 sts have been increased on each side. Now work in pattern without increasing on front edge but decreasing and then increasing side edge as for back until piece measures 12 3/4" (13 1/4", 13 3/4") from last row of lower edge shaping.

To Shape Armhole: Keeping front edge straight, shape opposite side as for back until piece measures 4 1/2" (5", 5 1/2") from first row of armhole shaping.

To Shape Neck: Keeping armhole edge straight, dec 1 st at neck edge on every row until piece measures 7" (7 1/2", 8") from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Continuing with neck shaping as before, decrease 10 (10, 7) sts at armhole edge of next 2 (2, 3) rows. Break off.

LEFT FRONT: Work as for right front, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES: Starting at lower edge, make a chain 15" long and work in pattern until row measures 11" (12", 13"). Cut off remaining chain. Continue in pattern until piece measures 2".

To Shape Top: Dec 4 sts at both ends of next row and 1 st at both ends of every following row until 22 sts have been decreased in all on each side. Break off.

FINISHING: Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Work a rnd of sc all along outer edges. With knitting ribbon work 2 rnds in pattern all along outer edges, including sleeve edges. Sew grosgrain ribbon, cut to your own measurement, at waist (on wrong side), holding garment in to fit. Sew hooks and eyes equally spaced between waistband and first row of neck shaping.

NOTE: In blocking, steam hip section to taper smoothly into ribbon band.
