Sleeveless Slip Over Sweater

MATERIALS: 8 balls knitting wool. Use 1 pair needles, No. 5
Cast on 126 stitches.
Knit 6 stitches and purl 6 stitches across entire sweater. Continue knitting where purled in previous row, in so doing forming ribs.
Do this for 89 rows, then knit plain for 27 ribs.
Bind off 27 stitches on each side of sweater.
Decrease 1 stitch on each side for 5 ribs.
Knit 19 ribs on this length.
Take off 18 stitches on extra needle.
Bind off 26 stitches for neck and knit on remaining length. *10 rows on this length.
Increase 1 stitch each rib on neck side for 24 ribs.*
Knit other side from * up to this point.
Then knit the 2 sides together.
Knit 27 ribs.
Then purl and knit as on back for 89 rows and bind off.
Sew up seams with wool.
Sleeveless Sweater

Size 40: 80 stitches
Size 38: 76 stitches
Size 36: 72 stitches
MATERIALS: 2 1/2 hanks of yarn (5/8lb), 1 pair needles No. 3
Cast on 80 stitches, knit 2, purl 2 stitches for 4 inches. Knit plain until sweater measures 25 inches. Knit 28 stitches, bind off 24 stitches for neck loose. Knit 28 stitches. Knit 8 ridges on each shoulder, cast on 24 stitches. Knit plain for 21 inches. Purl 2, knit 2 stitches for 4 inches. Sew up sides, leaving 9 inches for armholes. 2 rows single crochet around neck and 1 row single crochet around the armholes.
When crocheting the neck opening -- be sure, at least corner, to take in 2 stitches deep, so as to prevent a hole appearing at the corners.
