Vivienne Westwood Lighter

Shin's Vivienne Westwood lighter plays an important part in Shin's role in the manga. Those who pay a great detail to the manga would notice that all memebers of Blast wear some sort of globe symbol around their clothing (whether it be earings, rings or piercings). Vivienne Westwood is actually a real British designer; her tradmake is the globe symbol, and it's needless to say that Yazawa Ai protraited Blast as fans of her work. As a random note, Blast is also a fan of the band the Sex Pistols, and during their first concert, the Sex Pistols wore Vivienne Westwood deisgner attires to show their love towards her.

Around chapter 11 of the manga, Shin starts smoking the brand "Blast Stones" (Blast's original influence for naming); but we've seen the vivienne westwood lighter on his neck since chapter nine of the manga when Nana and Hachi takes Shin out to eat, which is also around the time when he gets his lip piercing. Of course, Shin doesn't officially start smoking until later, but his lighter often appears around his neck despite his change in clothing.

Why do I even bother mention such a trivial thing, you ask? The truth is that the lighter plays a important part a pretty important part in Shin's on and off relationship with Reira. When he first spents a night with Reira, he accidently leaves his lighter in her hotel room and complains about it all throughout chapter 19 about not being able to light his cigrette with a match. Later on he gets a call from Reira, who opens the door, smiling at him while going "I know you left this on purpose because you wanted to come back". In reality, she was joking and Shin had forgotten it by accidently.

As the manga progresses, Shin continued his business with Reira. In chapter 36, when he found out that Hachi was together with Takumi, who had been Reira's first love, he realized how loney the Trapnest vocalist really was and showed up at her hotel room and sung "Dearst Layla", the song from which Reira had originally been named after (her real name is Layla, but she calls herself Reira so it would sound more Japanese), while playing an agustic guitar. When Reira woke up the next day, Shin was gone. At first Reira was stressed about her band flying to London, but then she realized that Shin had left his lighter in her bathroom; this time, on purpose. Reira automaticly hangs the lighter around her neck (although she doesn't take it to London with her because she's afriad to losing it). She first emailed Shin to thank him for letting her borrow his lighter, which starts a serious of semi-romatic email exchanges between the two. After Reira returned to Japan, she wears the lighter to interviews. When Takumi had grabebd the lighter off of her neck in attempts to light his cigerette, Reira freaks out and refuse to let him to use. Ren asks her whether the lighter was Shin's, since it was a really rare Vivienne Westwood item and he had previously seen Shin wearing it, in which Reira lies and say that it wasn't. (No one believed her, of course, since she herself didn't smoke).

When Blast and Trapnest meet up in the same interview studio, Reira sneaks into Shin's van and returns the lighter to him and the expected happens. Although that was when Shin stopped charging Reira.

Where to get

As far as I know, the lighter is actually an authentic Vivienne Westwood item, and I've seen something similiar to it on Vivienne Westwood's official spring jewlery collection. You can find images of it by visiting her website here. There has also been street verisons (in other words, nonauthentic) of the lighter around the web. You can fine the official "NANA manga release" of the lighter off of ebay. I've seen many of this item being sold with prices as low as $5.00. However, beware that it's not made from authentic materials, and it's not really a lighter, just a pendant that strongly resembles the lighter.

If you're too lazy to do a ebay search, you can find a large list of Nana items here as well. Basically, this item is great for cosplay, or if you just feel light expressing your love for Shin by randomly wearing it around. This is actually a great deal since most of us don't have money to buy the authentic designer Vivienne Westwood lighter.
