Old Folk - New Songs: Volume 2
Fraught with turbulence, valor, tragedy and often humor, this three-part series tells of the stories and people that are Dave's life. This long-conceived project completes the series of albums that started in 1987 with the release of Welcome to the Park.
"I've tried to keep Volume 2 balanced by keeping the social side of folk going strong, yet mix it with the inter-personal stuff. I believe that folk is a two part gift. The first part is something youre born with, and the second half is given to you. It influences you. Helps define your style. Becomes, in a way, your musical parent. I got hooked on Harry Chapins Music in 1972. At 10 years old I was trying to write like Harry. As I grew up, I found my own voice and my own way. There is a responsibility that comes with folk music. Passing the music you love on to others, teaching why it is important to be socially aware and being politically involved are some of those responsibilities. For only if we stay awake can we make a difference in our world. Harrys cause was ending hunger, mine is in building libraries. Usually I find my stories in people more than in events. I have written a few songs about events, but they always seem to get dated too fast. My hope is that you like the music well enough to want to hear it again. As always, tell me what you think. Feedback is important to me. Song ideas and stories are always welcome."

The Stories
1. No More Waste Valley - In the late '50s, West Valley, NY got
a visit from the governor. A short time later, a nuclear rod manufacturing plant was
built. Obsolete by the time it's construction was completed, it was closed in the '70s.
The clean up of the site began in the '80s and continues today.
2. Dan's Song - For Daniel Edward "Fritz" Ritz, who
was a child I held through church when I was 12. The boy has long since become a man.
3. Back to the Park - Harry Chapin said, the
photographs and headlines change, but the story stays the same.
4. Judith - Life is funny. You know you're an adult when your
best friend's mother asks you for advice.
5. The Volunteers - Based on true events that happened while
I was a fireman with the North Evans Volunteer Fire Company. This song is dedicated to the
memory of Willy Buchanon. He was a fine man, good friend, and able mentor.
6. Bomber Simpson - True story. Bomber said he had 2 curses
in life: being black and being tall. People only expected one thing from him, he delivered
more. And on top of that, he was a cool guy.
7. Something Kinky - Come on
you don't expect me to be
serious all the time, do you?
8. Age of the Gun - True story from Buffalo, NY. Reporters...
got to love them.
9. A Love Never Returned - Sometimes we give too much to the
wrong people.
10. Long Time Running - A song about a writing drought.
