STARTING OUT - BASIC PASS
Start out with the Flame Stick vertically resting on the ground (the rubber tip touching ground) with the two hand sticks horizontal holding the Flame Stick in place. Bring hand sticks parallel 6 - 9 inches apart and let the Flame Stick rest on one. Gently pass the Flame Stick back and forth so that the tip does not leave the ground. As you get more comfortable you can add a gentle upward pull and allow the tip of the Flame Stick to leave the ground. You can also bring the hand sticks further apart - whatever distance is comfortable for you. Try to keep your passing slow and even so that the Flame Stick remains in control and rhythmic. Once you have the Basic Pass down move on to some harder tricks like Spins.
KICK-OFF
From the Basic Pass position give the Flame Stick a slight downward thrust with the hand stick so that the Flame Stick is parallel to the ground. Allow the stick to hit the top of your foot and push or kick the Flame Stick back up but with a slightly sideward motion so that the Flame Stick comes back up vertically and into the right position for a Basic Pass. It is best to wear shoes for this technique.
SINGLE SPIN
From the Basic Pass position apply slightly more pressure from one of the hand sticks onto the Flame Stick and allow the Flame Stick to spin once before catching it with the other hand stick. Several Single Spins can be done in succession to create the STAIR CLIMB which looks like a stair climbing action.
DOUBLE SPIN
From the Basic Pass position apply slightly more pressure from one of the hand sticks onto the Flame Stick (slightly more pressure than the Single Spin) and allow the Flame Stick to spin twice before catching it with the other hand stick. You will also have to give a little upward force to get a some height for the Double Spin. The Double Spin can also be transformed into a Multiple Spin where you allow the Flame Stick to spin several times before being caught with the other hand stick. The key to executing multiple spins is using the hand stick to get right amount of pressure and upward thrust needed on the Flame Stick to get the necessary spin and height.
PROPELLOR
From the Basic Pass position allow the Flame Stick to land on either of the hand sticks towards the center of the Flame Stick and move the hand stick in a circular motion (as if drawing a circle in mid-air) with more pressure than you would use for the Basic Pass. The circular motion needs to be tight and fast to get enough momentum to produce the effect without dropping the Flame Stick. The Flame Stick should spin around the hand stick and look like a plane propellor. To stop the propellor use a swift upward J-like motion similar to the Basic Pass and allow the Flame Stick to land on the opposite hand stick and resume with the Basic Pass technique.
THE HELICOPTER
The Helicopter is much harder and takes longer to master. Start in the basic pass position. As the Flame Stick lands on the right hand stick pull the hand stick towards you and put pressure on the Flame Stick to pass and as the Flame Stick lands on the left hand stick move the hand stick away from you and put pressure on the Flame Stick to pass. The motion is similar to the hand movements on a bus steering wheel when turning a corner. The Flame Stick should begin to move in a more circular motion and should almost begin to ride on top of the sticks. A Propellor is a good technique to add to the Helicopter.
ONE HANDED
From the basic pass position give the Flame Stick a little more upward motion with the right hand stick and as it moves in the other direction move the right hand stick to catch the pass and pass the Flame Stick again. As it is passed in the other direction move the right hand stick again to catch the pass and pass again. You are basically taking the left hand stick out of the basic pass temporarily. This is a difficult technique that requires precise pressure on the Flame Stick.
