black kuhlis - pangio javanicus/pangio oblonga

These are really attractive little fish, though it's for their behaviour rather than their appearance alone. They'll spend a lot of time hiding under a convenient bit of bogwood, or resting in a particularly obscure bit of the tank, but when they're out and about they're fast-moving, busy and entertaining. Like most loaches, they rest in some ridiculous positions - as well as lying on their sides they're very keen on resting in plants or draped over anything convenient - the one below decided that nose up against the glass was a good idea...

They don't like open water - while they're happy out in the open, as it were, they need to be on the bottom or swimming against or along something, whether it's tank furniture or the glass itself. I occasionally see one swimming a few inches above the bottom, very fast, for a short burst, but it's rare. At night they can spend ages following each other around the glass - up, down, round and round, really fast - but they don't use the middle of the tank.

This site was originally created to display my fish problems to the Loach Forum, for which many thanks.
Below is one of these problems which has now been solved, but it's still interesting, at least to me.
The top photo shows a perfectly normal black kuhli; the second one is a photo of a "scratched" fish - these marks/scars are proliferated; they started of as a couple and seemed to increase every time I looked at the fish:

OW.
A number of suggestions were made - I was inclined to go along with damage - including a bacterial infection. I resisted the temptation to medicate and went along with the scrupulous water hygeine solution, which worked an absolute treat. The loach improved rapidly and now shows only the faintest scarring. Thank you, Graeme, for your support of this method; it gave me the encouragement I needed.

In the time I've had these loaches, they've started to change their colouring - the one below has a bright banana yellow belly which none of the others have. At the moment I have absolutely no idea why...
