Empress Road depot is located in northern Southampton, and opened in August 2010 replacing Portswood depot, the former home of Southampton Citybus. More Information: These Volvo Olympians are part of the Yellow School Bus fleet, and used mainly on school contracts and other contract services. Olympian 34129 is the dedicated bus for the Hedge End superstores contract. None are in service with the mainstream fleet, which has now gone 100% low floor.

More Information: Empress Road operates two batches of Volvo B7TL double deckers. The first was a batch of 15 new in 2000 with Alexander ALX400 bodywork, bought to improve services and replace Leyland Atlanteans. These buses have been branded for "Metro" routes 5/5A/11/11A in the past, along with "Overground" routes 17/17A, but now all wear ordinary fleet livery. All also have had their original dot-matrix displays replaced with LED displays. The second batch, acquired in 2007, was part of the final delivery of Volvo B7TLs to First before the Volvo B9TL was introduced. All are allocated to route 8/8A and are the newest double deckers at Portswood. The Alexander bodied examples are usually found on route 17. The third batch of Volvo B7TL to be operated from Empress Road depot are 9 former First London buses, numbered 32251 to 32259.

More Information: Southampton operates 2 batches of Dennis Dart SLF. The original batch are numbered 42504-7, consisting of four Plaxton Pointer 1 bodied Dart SLFs, new to Southampton Citybus as the first low floor Darts in the fleet. The batch with registrations R408-27WPX followed in 1997. Sister 41515 has moved to Hoeford, but the reason why 41515-9 are out of sequence is due to a numbering mistake when the national fleet numbers were first introduced - 42515-9 are found on Caetano bodied Darts in London, which should have the numbers carried by these Hampshire Darts. Initially, 41515-9 carried the wrong numbers in service but these were soon corrected. In late 2005, and then in spring 2006, two further batches joined the fleet from Glasgow, consisting of registrations R---GHS and R---DUS. All arrived with dot matrix displays, whereas the original Southampton examples operate with LED displays. The mainstay of the single deck fleet operate a variety of routes - route 3, routes 9 and 10, and these can often be found on route 8 as well. 42449 was acquired from First Devon & Cornwall's Barnstaple depot late in 2010, and is allocated to the Yellow School Bus department.

More Information: In February 2009, First Hants & Dorset upgraded route 16 (Southampton to Hamble) with 4 brand new Enviro 200 single decker buses, replacing ADL Dart MPDs previously in use on the route. All arrived in fleet livery, and were introduced to service in March 2009. These are always used on route 16, although on Sundays the 16 interworks with route 7, thus they also operate route 7 on Sundays. On Sunday 19th April they received branding for route 16.

More Information: First Hants & Dorset won the Lymington Cango contract in 2008, which required an Optare Solo to operate the contract. 53076, a HCC vehicle, was acquired from Wilts & Dorset on loan from HCC (W&D had operated it on loan also), and 53140 was transferred across from Hilsea to act as a spare bus. 53140 is regularly seen on ordinary service work, where 53076 always operates the Cango contract. 53140 can usually be found on route 14, although it is known to stray off route.

More Information: Southampton operates a small batch of Volvo B10BLEs, which are usually found on route 17. They have always operated from Southampton (Portswood & Empress Road depots), although sister 66126 now operates with First Bradford. 66153-5 (S353/4NPO, S355XCR) were transferred to Portswood in May/June 2009 after their intended transfer to First in Sheffield was cancelled, and now operate from Empress Road following the opening of the new depot.

More Information: Southampton are receiving their first ever Volvo B7RLEs for public service over Autumn 2010. After Portswood was the feeder depot for the arrival of Hilsea's B7s, and then possible B7s were dropped in favour of Enviro200s on route 16/16A, Empress Road are receiving 10 former First Devon & Cornwall Volvo B7RLEs displaced from Ugobus services. The '05' and '55' examples were new to Manchester, and the '07' examples to West Yorkshire.

More Information: Southampton have received two rare Autosan Eagle school buses acquired with the takeover of Truronian. These are to be allocated to specific contracts alongside the existing school buses - these have not been decided yet. I managed to photograph 68302 in Truro earlier in 2010. Please note: one school bus is always allocated to Hoeford depot, although run from the same YSB unit - 68302 now operates from Hoeford depot at present.
