My husband says that that i should be less cynical on my blog, he´s right... i should get with the program.. we´ve been in the Netherlands for almost 4 years, and getting used to the place and its people should be a matter of course; like breathing, or critical listening - a little skill of theirs I am deeply envious of.
Here´s a little example. I´m sitting in a Health and Safety presentation (guess who i´m working for at the moment), and during this time we are lead through a presentation with average slides, and an average speaker, but OK, reasonable points, aimed at reminding the audience of some key health and safety measures that need to be adhered to. I´m thinking to myself: "mmm yes, interesting."
Afterwards I chat to my compadres in the coffee area. Tens of points of critisism pour out, holes in his arguments are pointed out, different viewpoints are discussed, and why must it be so and not so. I´m a little dumbfounded. My greatest contribution is that I think a Powerpoint presentation with a blue background and white lettering is a no-no from the mid-nineties. I asked my manager about this.
"Do they teach it to you in school to listen so critically?"
"No, its ingebakken".
