Cat has a very capacious udder for such a shorty. She's only 18" tall at LA but giving us around 3 cups of milk, two times a day! This is a combination of lines going back to J-Nels, Caesar's Villa, Kids Corral, Twin Creeks, and so many more fabulous foundation animals, including Rosasharn. Cat has very long teats and a soft udder; she is easy to milk

Palisade is currently on milk test again, and this time she milked almost 7 lbs on her first test. Woohoo!

*SPECIAL NOTE: In June 2014, we were alerted that there had been a few instances of positive Q-fever tests at the farm where Palisade previously resided. We drink raw milk, so just to be on the safe side, we had her tested via UC Davis in July 2014. Her test results (milk) were negative for exposure/antibody to Coxiella burnetii, which is the bacteria that causes Q-fever, which means that if she was exposed, her body was not susceptible to the bacteria and/or she did not react to/develop any antibodies to it. I have no worries about her kids or others being positive since she was not positive, and everyone else I have with the Proctor Hill herdname has been here for years before the Q-fever alert, so I am not worried over those either. I might add testing for this bacteria to my normal routine of CAE/CL testing because it is contagious to humans and can be passed by contact with other animals, too, including cats and dogs, through aeresols, blood, and even tick 'dust.' Like Lyme's disease, a person may not even know they have been infected but may later develop health issues when treatment will no longer help. YES! There is a treatment for infection--doxycycline and a few other antibiotics--for humans and animals, and after treatment, animals must be re-tested to make sure they are not carriers of the bacteria, which can infect other animals. The main modes of transmission would be drinking raw milk, aeresols--airborne urine and feces particles, and birth fluids, including placental tissue and amniotic fluid.  Unfortunately, this bacteria is not widely tested for by herd owners because the costs for testing are very expensive, and if even one animal is positive, the herd would need re-tested repeatedly to ensure that it was just an exposure and not infection. Because it is not tested for widely, and because it can be spread via aeresols not just from goats, but from cattle, sheep, and other farm and wild animals, it is always a possibility that any person could be exposed to the bacteria at some time, especially at fairs, zoos, shows, public attractions with animals, pet stores, petting zoos, wildlife hikes, and even in our own backyard if animals are nearby! If exposed, and if the bacteria is not contracted, a person would develop immunity to the bacteria. The people to worry most about would be those with weakened immune systems or the young with underdeveloped immune systems.

The bacteria isn't a 'management' issue; after all, it is close to impossible to keep away all insect pests, especially from browsers, and ticks are a major cause of the problem as is exposure to other possibly infected animals, including deer and other nomadic animals. Sheep seem to be more prone to the bacteria than other animals. Right now, we are all just very happy she turned out negative, and very sad for anyone who received a positive result on other farms. Thankfully, as previously mentioned, simply receiving a positive is not enough to say that the animal has the bacteria. It simply means they tested positive for the antibody, which means they have been exposed at some point but may have never reached an active infection point. In that case, the animal fought off the illness and would not carry the bacteria or pass it on. You WANT animals like this in your herd because it means they have natural resistance to the bacteria. Of course, there are always a few 'carrier' animals, but those are animals that were actually infected at some point without the knowledge of the owner. Also, some animals that do test positive can eventually turn negative since the positive may just mean the animal was exposed and developed antibodies. If there is no continued exposure, positives will turn negative. According to the researchers spoken to at more than one university, it is better to receive negatives on animals that are actually being exposed. This means that they have a natural immunity, which is what you want in your herd. Also, if any animal is positive, does not reach active infection, and then turns negative, this means they also may be developing a natural immunity and may pass that on to their offspring.

Coxiella is heat resistant, but pasteurization will kill it in the milk. It is also most contagious within a 4-5 week period after parturition. This is NOT a new bacteria; it has been in existence in the US since the 1920s. It is one that has two life stages, going dormant and then returning later in the animal's life if not treated when the animal has an active infection. It is a WIDESPREAD disease in relation to cattle farms, goat farms, and sheep farms worldwide. Yes, the milk you drink in a jug probably has had Coxiella bacteria in it-- or antibodies, but the milk is pasteurized, which kills it. In fact, studies of bulk tanks show this bacteria present in the US before pasteurization. If you drink/sell raw milk, it would be a good idea to test your milkers to be on the safe side since babies, young children, and persons at risk for illness can acquire the bacteria, become ill, and suffer related health issues IF an animal in your herd isn't just positive, but actually has the illness.

Again, because of the raw milk movement, Q-fever is something those involved should think about when it comes to their livestock and other animals. It CAN cause 'abortion clouds' or herd miscarriages, which are often assumed to be the fault of listeria or toxoplasmosis. It is a COMMON illness and can cause severe problems if someone is not aware that their animal could be infected. It seems to be becoming much more common in livestock and other animals in the US, and it is a danger to humans since due to aeresols travelling long distances (a few miles at times), herd illness (not just exposure) could infect other animals and people, which could in turn infect people outside of the area. Yes, this can be problematic, too, for those who clean up after animals and can infect those who care for the animals or attend births. True infection can also infect the soil for up to 2 years. Burning and/or cleaning simply spreads the aeresols instead of destroying bacteria.

The bacteria is most common in the northern and western US, but with today's herd movements across the US, it can be found almost anywhere! The aeresols travel especially well in dry, windy weather and are the most prolific during kidding season.

Third freshening udder and three years old!  And she earned

Palisade has good rear leg angulation and a level topline with an overall open general appearance. She is long, well proportioned, and level in the rump. She has a wide escutcheon, plumb teats, large orifices, good division, and nice medial. Her udder is something to marvel at when full to capacity! It is high and wide. She has correct feet and legs.  She could use her better brisket--front end.

Current photo and rear udder
We are VERY happy to have this doe back in our herd. Jody left in 2011 to live at Run Joey Run farm and produced several beautiful animals there. She has now returned to Firestone Creek along with her beautiful daughter, Emma, out of On Firestone Creek AA Mesa. Jody has earned both of her stars in 2014 thanks to John Bane; we brought her home, and due to the change, she dropped dramatically in milk, so we went ahead and dried her off. We will be trying for top 10 next year, perhaps. :)

Jody is very dairy, extremely deep, and exceptionally long; she is very well balanced throughout with good legs and feet. This is what earned her a 90 on LA this year. She has a wide rump that is nice and flat. Her orifices are large, teats are well placed, and she has good separation and absolutely lovely, butter-like, texture to her udder. I loved milking her as a first freshener, and it's even better now.

Cocoa is a beautiful girl bred by Run Joey Run farm. She is long and deep with a superbly sweet temperament. She is a granddaughter of SG On Firestone Creek Palisade 2*M 5*D and daughter to On Firestone Creek R Minnie  Me 3*M 6*D, who scored an 88 in LA in 2014 and also won Best Udder at the Spring Fling show in Rocky Mt, NC in May 2014. Sonic is a beautiful, long buck out of Rosasharn Uproar +*S and October Hill Country Charm 4*D AR, who is also Palisade's mother. Sonic has the sharpest, longest, straightest topline I've ever seen in addition to having excellent rump width. It will be interesting to see what this doe will produce and what she will look like after a few freshenings.

On Bella's first milk test (second fresh), she milked almost 7  lbs! She dropped after that, but it is my fault, not hers; my
schedule doesn't always permit me to milk exactly on schedule like I need to. I'm very proud of her!

I expect Bella to turn out to be one of our best does. She is very angular and sharp with lots of depth. Her udder looks fantastic at just a few days after freshening with good teat size, large orifices, great capacity. Her udder is very high and socked on tight! We are thrilled.

Bella kidded with a single doeling on 6/2. Uneventful delivery. We are retaining On Firestone Creek SB Bonita who is a buckskin with extensive black cape.  Her second freshening was bucklings--none retained.

This girl is SUPER long and sharp. She oozes dairy character! She has a nice flat rump and long neck, but her rump angle could be a little better (working on that). I'm excited about her udder because she is extremely capacious! Her teat placement is off a bit right now, but I am hoping that will improve on her next freshening because her medial seems to be pretty good. She has a lot of capacity for a first freshener, giving almost 2 qts a day! I can't toss her out with that kind of capacity, regardless of the teat placement. We'll see if it improves. Sometimes it does, so I hope so!

Sunnee is very dairy and sharp with fine boning. She is a true miniature dairy goat with a long neck and lots of length and balance. When set up, she is level with nice, dairy ribs, and a flat rump.  She has good attachments, a nice fore udder, and a strong medial, along with huge orifices. I can milk her out in about 2 minutes. While her teat placement is not perfect, her second freshening has made me very happy, and I decided to retain a buckling out of this breeding with Cuervo Gold. See buck page.

Cardy is a super super sweet little love. I've had plenty of sweet babies, but I don't think I've ever had a baby this sweet! From day 1, she's climbed all over anyone who would let her. She knows no strangers! She will suck on your ears if you will let her. She acts more like a little puppy than a goat.

Yes, as you can see, she has moonspots. On the right side, she has silver moonspots, and on the left, she has huge dark brown moonspots. I love spots, but I love her conformation more. Her and her sister are both long and sharp with very nice toplines. Hoping for lots of lovely babies in the future along with tons of milk out of this one! Check out the pedigree to see why!

Joy is a daughter of Firestone Creek Palisade born at Proctor Hill Farm in MA. She is a daughter
of the late Rosasharn TL Challenger. Usually I try to name all of these kids with PAL at the beginning
of the name, but Joy named herself. If you look closely, you will see that her name is written on her side.

Joy stands on perfect feet, has good length, and is nice and sharp everywhere that she should be. She has a nice topline, great rump, and excellent, correct angle to the rear legs. I really like this girl and so did the judge who did our LA. She is oozing with dairy character while still being balanced in strength.

Joy has a very nice first freshening udder.

On the Knoll F Symphonia BD 10 / 2013

Swiss marked with tan and belt

Freshening Bucklings Doelings Retained

1 1 1 doeling -- Flamenca
Symphonia is distantly linebred on Stetson and Luck of the Draw, and she brings in other great genetics that should tie in well here, including those that we have with Lost Valley Tae-Bo. Her paternal grandfather is out of the same breeding that created the Superior Genetics doe TINY TOWN S QUATTRO 2*M, who is #2 on ADGA's top ten list for 2013.  GCH Tiny Town S Topaz *M 2012 LA VEVE 90, was #4 on the top ten list for 2013 and is out of a similar breeding. Both of these are also Elite does.  I almost sold this doe because she was a very gangly teenager, but all of a sudden she came into her own, and I am glad it happened before anyone decided to snatch her up! Mama Mia, Symphonia's grandmaother, has produced at least three Superior Genetics daughters. One daughter has been in the top 10, three have been on the Elite doe list, and at least three have milk stars.

Symphonia's grandmother on her sire's side (Dill's GO Jumble Bug 5*D) tied for highest protein on 1 day test in 2006 for AGS. She is bred to J-Nels L Nutn Butta Rumor for Jan-Feb kids. This should bring in more Stetson along with adding a lot of Rosasharn, including Haiku, to the blend!

NC PromisedLand Epilogue
Young Stock ++V+  2015
12/27/2014

Named in honor of
Keith and Marie Harrell

We chose Epilogue as this doe's name for several reasons, but first and foremost, to give some small token of tribute to Keith and Marie Harrell, founders of the famous NC PromisedLand herd, for all of their hard work. After breeding goats for over 37 years, the herd was officially dispersed in 2012. Keith and Marie's herd produced many champions and star mom's and daughters.  I'm thrilled to have some of his and her favorite girls present, especially Rain-Beau, in Epilogue's pedigree.

An epilogue is the continuation of another story--the 'after' story, and in this case, it is the continuation of years of hard work ...

As a breeder who is striving for quality in all areas--milk and conformation, I know how much time and money, in addition to blood, sweat, and tears, it takes to even come close to developing a herd as beautiful as the now dispersed PromisedLand herd. Alhough Keith, an excellent show judge with an eye for perfection in his own herd in addition to the herd of others, while also being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend,  passed away in November of 2012, the influence this herd had on the breed will never be forgotten. Not only will they be recognized in pedigrees for generations to come, but hopefully all of Keith's and Marie's hard work will continue to live on in the remaining animals in existence, including those we have here are at Firestone Creek. Thanks so much to both of you for your time and persistence!!! We never know how much more we have left in this life, and it matters so much how we spend it. Marie--thank you so much, and Keith, you will be forever missed by many but never forgotten.

E-pilogue is the last breeding to be produced by NC PromisedLand. According to Dana, daughter of Marie and Keith Harrell, E-pilogue is the final animal they will ever produce. She is certainly something to stand up and applaud about! We are thrilled to add her to our herd. She is a strong linebreeding on NC Promisedland RB Sunflower, a maternal half-sister to SGCH NC Promisedland Rain-Beau. Sunflower is also a full sister to GCH NC Promisedland RB Moonshine 2*M 'VEEV 90', who was First Place Udder in the milking yearling class at the 2010 ADGA National Show.
*Sunflower was not shown due to a leg injury at birth, but according to her breeder, her udder looks as wonderful as her sister's, who is pictured below.

Above and right: SGCH NC Promisedland RB Moonshine 2*M 'VEEV 90, owned by Ellen Dorsey of Dill's a Little Goat Farm. Moonshine is a full sister to Sunflower.
