INTERCULTURAL EVENTS AND CAMPAIGNS

City Fusion: An Inter-Cultural Arts Initiative

Background

City Fusion is an inter-cultural community arts project devised by St Patrick’s Festival and produced in partnership with Dublin City Council.

City Fusion responds to a growing demand from a wide range of Dublin community groups to take part in St Patrick’s Festival and in particular the parade. St Patrick’s Festival is keen to reflect the increased number of new communities in Dublin city and to involve them in the festival.

City Fusion was established by St Patrick’s Festival for 2006-2007 to bring Irish and inter-cultural groups together to produce a collaborative artistic presentation for the parade. In 2006-2007 the project brought together 16 community groups, with over 250 participants from 25 countries, ranging in age from 12 to 60 years.

City Fusion 2008
Selected groups will work from October 2007 to March 2008 with a team of artists to create a pageant for St Patrick’s Festival parade. Participants will develop the idea for their presentation and learn skills in prop & costume making, performance, music and dance. A documentary film will also be produced as part of the project.

City Fusion allows a wide range of communities active participation in St Patrick’s Festival. The project enables diverse groups to work together, to learn & develop new arts skills, to have a visible presence as part of the festival & and to represent and share traditions. City Fusion is a public expression of the positive contribution of new and established communities to the life of Dublin city.

INVITATION TO LAUNCH ' REALISING INTEGRATION'

MIGRANT RIGHTS CENTRE'S launching of Report:

Realising Integration - Migrant Workers Undertaking Essential Low Paid work in Dublin City

To be launched by Minister Conor Lenihan TD

Date & Time:  Thursday 27th September ’07, at 11:00 am

Venue: The Atrium - Dublin City Council, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8

Cities have a key role to play in creating the conditions for migrant workers and their families to participate fully in their local communities. The focus of this report is to emphasise the integration experience and needs of migrant workers who are undertaking essential low paid work in Dublin city. Findings from the research indicate that this group of migrant workers are more vulnerable to unfair working conditions and workplace exploitation, have less job security and experience difficulties accessing services.

The report provides  a context for discussion and dialogue on the challenges faced, and possible actions to ensure Dublin is an inclusive and integrated city into the future
