GALWAY FILIPINO IRISH COMMUNITY

The Galway Filipino Community (GFC) is the home community of about 300 Filipinos of various skills and trades in the west of Rep. Of Ireland.  The community started from a humble beginning way back 2004 as the members gather to celebrate a monthly Eucharistic Filipino Mass and followed by an informal “salo-salo”.  From then on, the community has grown maturely over the years, knowing its needs and on what it can offer not just to its own members but also to the Irish society on a collective effort.

In the 3 years of existence, the community has its own aspirations just as we do. It aspires to help members in their dire need of financial, be it here or back home, by way of asking all the members to extend moral and financial support. It aspires to raise funds to help our less fortunate countrymen back home in our own little way. It aspires to promote well being among members emotionally, socially and physically by holding annual sports fest and major gathering. And finally, it aspires to be recognized as one potent migrant based community where integration to the host society is vital to the existence of GFC.

Three years of participation in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade, which is considered their national day of “Irishness” and perhaps the only biggest annual event throughout the country, is enough proof of our commitment to integrate ourselves on a collective basis and a showcase of our Filipino Cultural heritage. In this year’s Galway parade, GFC have presented one of our oldest and truest Filipino dances “Singkil” with musical background in a street dancing manner parade.  There were a total of 25 participating members composed by the dancers, flag and banner bearers, sound system carriers.  The sound system was carried on a makeshift wooden push trolley commonly known to us as “kariton” and perhaps the only unique float that the onlookers have ever seen.  Despite the pouring rain condition that day, the people gave our participants a warm welcome and continuous applause as they gracefully dance away with their colourful fans and with the ethnic music background.  The presentation was perhaps the only street dancing part of the parade, as mostly were banned marches, floats and various colourful characters.

Once again, the Filipinos in the west of Ireland stood out and carried our tri-colour with pride and dignity and gained the respect in a foreign land.

THE PHILIPPINE CHORALE ENSEMBLE

The Philippine Chorale Ensemble is composed of young, talented enthusiastic singers whose main goal is to promote Philippine music and culture by chorale rendition. The Ensemble also performs in private functions desiring choral music as part of their entertainment. In the past the Ensemble has been invited to perform at the St. Patrick's festival, China Town Festival, World Culture Festival in Dun Laoghaire, Multicultural Sports Fest by SARI, Pres. McAleese's World Family Gathering, Project launching of Dublin City Council, Philippine Independence Day Commemoration and other functions. These performances serve to build the Filipino community's relations with the Irish, local and ethnic communities. The Phil Chorale Ensemble is one of the few ethnic cultural groups listed in the Community Arts Directory for Dublin. Are you a gifted singer? The group is looking for more members who want to use their talents to promote Filipino traditional and contemporary songs in Ireland. Give a call on 085 1483563 and look for Tina Peji or 087 9357688 - Mike Ancheta.
