In the Beginning...

In the beginning, there was a great disturbance in the force… as if thousands of voices screamed out in pain and were suddenly silenced. A planet off in the very far away distance had been disintegrated killing all the inhabitants. This was the work of the Evil Empire. A band of renegades sworn to overthrow this Evil Empire formed and heralded a need for some heroes. Thus, Fight School was called into action!!!

OK, OK, Ok…. So, that’s not the way it really went down… but you get your own show and you can make any beginning story you like.

Here’s what really happened. The Entertainment Director of the Maryland Renaissance Festival (Carolyn Spedden) had the idea to produce an educational, “Living History” type of show that showcased weapons types and swordplay techniques taught by the Great Masters throughout the ages. The only problem??? She approached Fight School!!! But, as you may already know… they said, “Yeah sure, we’ll do it.”

So, they each set forth in a venture to get as much information that they could possibly find on the many subjects that pertained to swordplay and the Masters that taught it. They then assembled all the notes, chose the weapons they would use, wrote some fights, and put on the show. Needless to say their goal was accomplished… they had an extremely educational show… but the audience was bored stiff. They then decided to see if they could make their educational show more fun for the people that came to see them. Thus, Fight School as you know it today was started. They still get the information out there, but they seem to have more fun insulting one another in the process.

The Specifics of the Show...

This is an extremely fast paced show full of informational facts and comedic insults. It runs 30 to 45 minutes and encourages verbal audience interaction.

Each weapon is discussed in turn and a fight is shown in slow motion using that particular weapon. The slow speed is so that the audience can actually see how each fight is put together and so that the boys can point out, in the midst of a fight, where certain modern-day terminology comes from. At the conclusion of the slow speed fight, they then show what that exact same fight would look like at “Fight Speed.” This is so the audience gets a better idea of what the weapons would look like in actual combat.

(Safety is of their utmost concern. Please inquire about weapons limitations in small venues.)
