B-17F Flying Fortress 124485, DF-A 'Memphis Belle', 91st Bomb Group, 324th Bomb Squadron, Bassingbourn, 1943.Certainly the most famous 'Fort' of the war, the 'Belle' was the subject of a William Wyler movie made to boost morale at home. In addition to her well know nose art and bomb log (which stands at 24 on this scheme, just one short of the tour-completing 25), the aircraft is adorned with an oddly irregular darker green pattern.     Photo Recon Mosquito: USAAF skin

Mosquito NS594/U, 8th WRS(P)Light, 802nd Bomb Group, USAAF, RAF Watton, June 1944. To fill a gap in the US inventory, the USAAF employed a number of Mosquitos in the PR role. This particular example features a full set of Overlord invasion stripes (later reduced), and a large radio call letter on the tail, the circle surrounding it indicating a Weather Squadron. By 3dp.

This aircraft is "Gul Kalle" ("Yellow Kilo"), which was bought by the Swedish airforce from the americans at the end of WWII. In Sweden the Mustangs were called J-26 and were used for both interception and reconnaissance.

B-24 Liberator, 111825, V, Hail Columbia, 98th Bomb Group (Pyramiders), 9th Air Force, 1943. The B-24 flown by the 98th's famed leader Col John 'Killer' Kane during the low-level raid against the Romanian oil fields at Ploesti, Operation Tidal Wave, on 1 August 1943. The sand finish was typical of Mediterranean-based Liberators. By 3dp.

B-24 Liberator, 123599, B-N, Hellzadroppin II, 93rd Bomb Group (Ted's Traveling Circus), 1943. The 93rd BG was one of the 8th Air Force Liberator units detached to the Mediterranean Theatre for the famous low-level raid against the Romanian oil fields at Ploesti, Operation Tidal Wave, on 1 August 1943, hence the olive drab scheme instead of a desert finish. By 3dp.
