FFX/X-2 DVD Reviews
For you ebay-ers out there, you might have seen DVD versions of FFX and FFX-2. Perhaps you've been interested, but were afraid to purchase them in case they turned out to be terrible. Well, this page is here to give you a break down of each DVD. Hopefully, you can then have the information you need to decide whether or not to buy.

FFX DVD - FFX-2 DVD

Final Fantasy X DVD

# of Discs: 2
Running Time: ~8 hours
Region Code: All region, NTSC
Audio: Japanese
Subtitle: English/Chinese

The Good
In addition to the FMVs, this dvd provides almost all the story elements including cut scenes and even the death scenes of bosses. Most of the main story is there, and even the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth optional story is included. I don't think I need to tell many of you how great it is to hear the original voices.

The Bad
The audio is not the cleanest it could be, but it's acceptable. The people who made the DVDs, Manga, put a logo in the upper right hand corner that never goes away. Also, the Chinese subtitles are not optional and cover up the bottom of the screen most of the time. The English subtitles are not very good, replete with strange translations and bad grammar. (Sin is called Torture, Yuna is Yonna, Wakka is Walter, Kimahri Ronso is Christopher Leo, Guado are known as the Chubby Race, and that's just for starters...) They do translate all the Al Bhed, though, so you can get an idea of what they're saying. The side-quests aren't included, but considering that both DVDs are already overflowing with over 8 hours of material, to include those, another DVD would have been necessary. There are some minor cuts from the main story (part of Lulu and Wakka's conversation on the SS Winno, part of Jyscal's sphere was cut short), but they are very minor.

The Verdict
If you can understand a fair amount of Japanese, you should have no problems without the English subtitles. The Al Bhed dialogue may give you a bit of trouble, though. If you can't but played the game and/or have don't mind the wonky subtitles (or can read Chinese, though I don't know how good those subtitles are) you will still probably have little problem understanding the dialogue, since the English was pretty much a straight translation of the Japanese. The logo and Chinese subs obscuring the picture is a minor point of irritation, but for me, being able to see pretty much all of the story with the original Japanese seiyuu far outweighs the bad. I'm very happy with the DVD.

Final Fantasy X-2 DVD

# of Discs: 1
Running Time: 83 min
Region Code: All region, NTSC
Audio: Japanese
Subtitle: English/Chinese

The Good
The Chinese subtitles are now optional, and the English subtitles are much better. The Manga logo now appears only briefly. The main FMV scenes are included. The audio quality seems a little better than before. There are also "music videos" included of FFX-2 (really, just the 1000 no Kotoba FMV again, oddly), FFX (Utukisama, Suteki Da Ne, & Melodies of Life), FFIX (Melodies of Life, in English), FFVII (basically what you see when you pop in the game), and FFVI (also looks like the intro to the game).

The Bad
If you're thinking "83 minutes to cover the whole story? That doesn't seem right...," you're right. It's unbelievable how much was left out. Even the story parts they do show, most of the dialogue was skipped over (by pressing the O button). I realize that it might have been a little difficult to do a movie version of FFX-2, considering it's a bit more non-linear than FFX, but it would have been very possible. This hardly seems like an effort. So many things I was looking forward to seeing the original version of (such as the Den of Woe...), I didn't see at ALL. They didn't even bother getting the perfect ending, or even the good ending for that matter.

The Verdict
As much as I love being able to hear Baralai and Gippal's original voices in the final FMV, that's not enough to justify this DVD. Quite frankly, unless you're willing to pay money for nice versions of the real Emotion, "Side Effects," 1000 no Kotoba, and good ending FMVs, it's a waste of your money. This DVD miffs me so much I'm tempted to make one myself... >_< Anyway...I believe a quote from Yuna sums it up very nicely: "It sucks."
