In the land of Mietha, in the Realm of the Living, there was a single group of wizards called the Order of Magics. After 500 years of feuds between each major field of magics, the Order of Magics broke apart and four wizard sects formed. They were the Chaomancers, led by Amoik; the Necromancers, led by Ezal; the Mages, led by Tamun; and Sand Wizards, led Kronos, the most powerful of all wizards. Even after this break, they still fought. The Chaomancers were losing ground and turned to ancient magics for a source of new power. Through the sect's thirst for power, they were driven mad by the demons they uncovered until finally they no longer existed as Chaomancers, but as the Warped.
This new powerful sect fueled the hate between the other three sects to buy time while they sought out ancient secrets that would give them infinite power. At last, they found a gap between the Realm of the Living and the Realm of the Underworld. They released plagues, beasts, and destruction upon the once peaceful realm. The last of these was the Grand Demon, Calust. With a single word, a magical blast killed half of the members of each sect and most of the inhabitants of the realm. Kronos gathered many wizards into an alliance and attacked Calust. Kronos imprisoned Calust within a fallen stone pillar which was carved into a stone altar afterwards. The confrontation left Kronos weakened and he was possessed by Calust moments before imprisoning its physical form within the stone. He fought it until he reached the summit of Chaos Mesa and contained the demon's powers as long as he could. Without their leader, the Sand Wizards returned to their sprawling empire to await his return.
The remaining wizard groups continued fought each other despite the destruction around them. The warfare ended with the death of Tamun. The badly wounded Ezal deserted the Necromancers, fearing his assassination, and the remaining members of his sect settled at the ancient city of Zemun. He was biten and infected with vamprism so he went to find a cure but was captured by the Warped. The Mages began to excavate the ruins of their city to acquire the powerful artifacts they had made previous to the wars. They hoped to trade these devices to the Necromancers for the means of reviving their fallen leader. The Warped returned to their Shadow Lands and continued their experimentation in the arcane magics. The demons possessing them discovered the means to physically manifest themselves using the runes Ezal had inscribed on his armor. He escaped using an army of zombies as a diversion but Ezal was killed by renegade Mages. The magical enchantments he had always protected himself with revived him but being a vampire had tampered his magical wards. This caused him to become a wandering specter, neither living nor dead. He resurrected an army of 500,000 vampires and began to take over the Shadow Lands and the city of Kyras. An army of 500 clerics from Kyras and Fort Ivyr focused their magics with another 500 Elemental wizards to create a second sun. Led by the Master Cleric, Hreyn, they focused this sun into a powerful spear known as the Spear of the Final Sun. Hreyn threw the spear and hit Ezal's spectral form dead-on. The ensuing explosion rocked the entire realm. The explosion erased Ezal and his vampire minions from all realms in existence, even from the Realm of the Underworld, and now he could never be revived again. The Sand Wizards had teleported their entire empire into a new realm to avoid the blast. Now, all the sects had either withdrawn themselves from Mietha, or been in such disarray that they could never recover. The once protectors of the realm had come and gone. Chaos and death reigned for 300 years. Until one day...
