And the Champion is ...... Kevin Tefft

With one race left in the season, Kevin Tefft locked up the Whip City Speedway 270 Division season points championship Saturday night with a 3rd place finish, his tenth top five finish of the year. Leading at midrace, Tefft got drilled by Brian Boudreau, exhibiting more of his season long dirty driving. Tefft managed to recover, but not before Boudreau and Mark Irving had gotten around him. Tefft had talked to Boudreau after the heat, where Boudreau had also run over him. "There's no point talking to him, he just thinks that punting people is perfectly ok.",Tefft said after the feature. "Since the race director seems unwilling to police Boudreau's rough driving, we'll just have to settle things on the track." Up front as usual, crew chief Elmer Myers said "We may just bring the backup car next week and put Feigel in it. He may not be the fastest knife in the drawer, but I can guarantee you he's the meanest, and he's pissed. He has no qualms about teaching that little punk Boudreau a lesson." Regardless of all the on track excitement, after the race, the FMS crew celebrated a well deserved championship.

September 27 - Monsooned Again

After a week off for the 750/1200 shootout, Kevin Tefft was ready to get back to Whip City's 270 wars. That is until mother nature intervened for the fifth time this season. Kevin noted "We've got a solid, but not insurmountable, lead in the point battle. I've finished second four times this year and am tired of being the bridesmaid. Next time out, we're definitely going for the win." Crew chief "Big Guy" Meyers was actually happy about the rainout. "If we had the points championship locked, we were going to put Gene in the car for the last race. With the season extended for another week, that probably won't happen - which is a good thing. I don't think the world was really ready to see Feigel fumbling around out there."

September 13 - Back on Track

After two less than stellar weeks, Kevin Tefft was back in form at Whip City Speedway Saturday night. In the first non-stop feature of the season, Tefft wheeled the FMS RTS car to 2nd. Although yellow free, the feature was exciting and filled with good racing from the front to rear of the field. After the feature, Kevin said " I thought I had something for Scott Franqueza when we started to get into lapped traffic, but he was running the low line I needed. I didn't want to take a chance up high, because I knew Todd Bertrand was right there." Backing up the feature 2nd with another 2nd in his heat, Tefft extended his  lead over Dylan Menditto to 90 points with 2 races remaining. Crew chief Elmer Myers said "We needed this one. We were scratching our heads after last week and came into tonight with a totally different motor setup. The car was fast in the warmup and ok in the heat. We made a change before the feature and Kevin turned the fastest lap he's run all season. He came in and said the car felt slow, but the stopwatch doesn't lie. Shows what drivers know."

September 6 - Rain out

The remnants of hurricane Hanna forced Whip City Speedway to cancel Saturday night's program. Reached out home, driver Kevin Tefft expressed his disappointment. "After several down weeks, I was ready to get up on the wheel, but you can't do much about mother nature." The thoughts of the entire FMS team are with those in the path of hurricane Ike, as of Saturday night, a category 4 hurricane in the Carribean.

August 30 - Late Season Blues

Kevin Tefft suffered his second straight DNF at Whip City Speedway Saturday night with seized pistons in both the heat and feature. However, this time a tuning decision, not a preparation error caused the problems. After being pushed in at the conclusion of the feature, Tefft said "We started he season with a pretty conservative tune-up. We've slowly been leaning on the jetting and lately have been running pretty close to the edge. We just missed the call slightly with the weather conditions this week." Not deterred but a one night set back, team was up beat at the end of the evening. While enjoying Kevin's post race buffet, crew chief "Big Guy" Myers offered "We're confident we can turn this around. Gene keeps great notes. He has records on the weather conditions for every event this year with every spark plug dated to the notes. So we're not like a blind hog hunting for an acorn." A call to the FMS shop Monday confirmed that both engines were back together and ready to do battle next week.

August 23 - Stupidity Strikes

The car was hooked up, the motor was tuned up, and Kevin Tefft was flying in the feature from a ninth place start, but Gene Feigel had his brain shut off. After a last minute jet change before the feature, the carb came loose on lap six. Trying to console Feigel, crew chief Elmer Myers said "Its a team effort, Gene can't take all the blame for this." Feigel responded "Every decision we make on the setup is a team effort, but the team didn't put the carb back on, I did. Its my fault." If anything good can be salvaged from this fiasco, Tefft had the car handling really great and believes he has the setup to finish the season running up front. Coupled with engine and gearing changes that had Kevin turning his best lap times of the season, the FMS team is optimistic about closing out the year with its commanding point lead in the 270 division.

August 16 - A Little Less Old Age and Treachery

Saturday night was a mix of Marx brothers outtakes by the pit crew and another solid performance by Kevin Tefft. The Feigel Motorsports crew, which normally spends the afternoon sitting around in lawn chairs telling lies and trying to get Dylan Menditto to bulk up on pizza, was forced into attack mode when the car failed to start for the warmup. After checking the fuel pump, ignition and carb, the crew finally zeroed in on a kill switch stuck closed. Crew chief 'Big Guy' Meyers said " I've got to teach the geniuses in the chassis shop how to use a continuity tester." With a fairly comfortable point lead, FMS was experimenting with gearing, pipe length and shock settings. Tefft started the heat in the last row with these new settings and no practice. After being embroiled in a first lap mishap, Tefft cruised forward to third. After another of Feigel's last minute jet changes, but still carrying the experimental gear, Tefft started in the middle of the field in the feature. Kevin spent the feature tying the shocks down and had the car handling really well. The gear experiment didn't work so well, but Kevin, with his usual class driving, stilll moved to fourth, his 8th top five finish in the thirteen features held this year. After the feature Meyers observed "I've got to take back what I said last week. We need to give the jet board back to Gene and make him use it. He keeps blowing off that we haven't lost an engine all year, but his conservative setups are probably costing us a tenth or two a lap. Next week, I'm going to take matter into my own hands, and I'm bigger than him." Calm as ever, Tefft offered "Its great to have a a 106 point lead with six races left. I really feel good about our performance so far, but we can't be complacent. There are a lot of good cars out there and a couple of bad finishes could really close the gap."

August 9 - More Old Age and Treachery

Starting tenth in the feaure, Kevin Tefft got shuffled back to twelfth on the first lap. Not losing his temper and overdriving, Tefft, with his usual patience and professonalism, began working his way forward. The first lap encounter left Kevin contending with a badly bent left steering arm, but he soldiered his way forward to a solid sixth place finish. Car owner Gene Feigel said he was changing jetting all night and probably missed the setup, which didn't help either. Crew chief Elmer Myers observed "If Gene would spend more time smoking cigars and less time screwing with the carb, we'd probably be better off. Next week, I'm going to hide the jet board." Although not Feigel Motorsports' best night this season, Tefft holds a hefty 100 point lead with seven races remaining.

August 2 - Whip City Survives Rain

After the monsoons ended and lengthy track prep, Whip City was in great shape. For the first time in weeks, Kevin Tefft didn't pad his points lead in the 270 division. However, at the end of the evening, the Feigel Motorsports team was still celebrating with a 104 point lead. Never at a loss for words, when interviewed after the feature, crew chief Elmer 'Big Guy' Myers said "We've been starting in the middle of the pack for most of the season. Its tough. There are always fast cars in front and with a lot of parity, racking up consistent top five finishes is testimony to Kevin's driving. Because of the handicapping, there are a couple of wreckers who usually start in front. Its hair raising getting around them without getting collected in one of their messes. We've been running a pretty conservative motor program all season which has probably cost us some better finishes, but on the other hand, seven top fives speaks for itself."

Tefft Toughs it out at Whip City

270 division leader Kevin Tefft salvaged his 6th top five in the feature Saturday, July 26 after losing 5th gear half way through the twenty lap feature. Tefft's deft driving with a crippled car increased his point lead to 106 points at mid-season. Tefft's 'go or blow' run is  solid testimony to the DBY motor powering his Feigel Motorsports RTS Chassis ride.

270 Division Double Points Night

July 19 was double points night for the 270 minisprint division at Whip City Speedway. Double points nights are always an opportunity to be a hero or zero. Kevin Tefft was up to the task, starting 8th in the nine car first heat, Tefft charged forward for a 3rd place finish. Starting 9th in the feature, Tefft worked his way to fifth before being dive bombed late in the race. The tangle pushed Kevin back to 8th. With a few laps left, he recovered to sixth for another solid top ten finish. While not his best finish of the year, Tefft nevertheless increased his point lead in the 270 division to 82 points.

Tefft Pads Point Lead at Whip City

Saturday, July 12 was another good day at the office for Kevin Tefft. Starting eighth in the nine car first heat, Tefft wheeled the Feigel Motorsports car to a solid third place. Good finishes the last three weeks handicapped Tefft to an eight place start in the feature. When the checkered dropped, Kevin had recorded his fifth top five in the eight races run at Whip City. Fighting a tight car in turns one and two, Tefft was closing on fourth at the end. Kevin's smart driving and the FMS improving engine package pushed Tefft's point lead to 76 points going into the double point race next Saturday.

Kevin Tefft Leads 270s at Whip City Speedway 6/28/08

The old green machine has been relegated to a backup, but the results keep coming. After the first third of the season, Kevin Tefft in the Feigel Motorsports 270 leads the field by 54 points at Whip City Speedway. With four feaure top fives and two heats wins, Kevin has been a picture of consistency. Fielding a new RTS chassis and with a new shock program from Advanced Racings Suspensions, the FMS car has been hooked up on Whip City's often rough track.
