Getting to the Philippines Flying a round trip from the United States to the Philippines on Northwest Airlines will cost approximately $1, 200. Cathay Pacific ID90 tickets from JFK are $390. Philippine Airlines flies direct to Manila out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Japan AIrlines flies out of Alanta, and a few other places. FedEx will pay for your ticket. Unfortunantly, it takes about 20 hours to get to Manila on a plane. Once in Manila, you will have to take a taxi to the Cargo Haus (a FedEx airport), where you can take the FedEx shuttle (a twin-engine Otter) to Subic.
Once in the Philippines Cars shipped from the US might take a few months or a few weeks to get to the Philippines, but car rentals at Avis and Budget are available.
Subic has a taxi service,
Winstar, which always has taxis available in case one suddenly finds
themselves without transportation. The same company also runs the bus
service in Subic (a bus runs every half hour). Transportation in
Olongapo is not operated by the company which runs the taxis and busses on
base, although the Subic taxis will go off base. Outside, you can take a tricycle. That is a
small motorcycle with a cart on the side. The cost depends on how far you
go. You can also take a jeepney, which is just a long jeep. They cost 3
pesos (6 cents). Traveling around the Philippines Philippine Airlines is the most commonly used airline when traveling around the Philippines, which isn't too expensive when traveling domestically. Another Philippine airline is Cebu Pacific. They are a low-cost airline based out of Cebu, and they also do lots of domesitc flights around the Philippines. If you only want to get to Manila, you can take the Otter (a FedEx run shuttle plane from Manila to Subic) for free. There is a ferry service, run out of Bataan (about an hour away from Subic), and the Subic Bay Yacht Club has a shuttle to take you there. The ride is about an hour, so it is still faster than driving to Manila.
Going from the Philippines
there are many airlines to choose from. Coming back, Philippine Airlines is
usually the cheapest. You will need to get to Manila before you can get on a
flight to another country or to another island in the Philippines. If you
want, you could charter a private flight, and depart directly from Subic.
The Legenda Hotel has a membership program that gives cheap tours to nice
places like Malaysia. The flight is chartered, so you can depart directly
from Subic.
