To all that had known the young woman agreed she was a beautiful soul. Ask anyone. They would agree. Jessica had a generous nature. Her willingness to give a piece of her heart to everyone she had met was what quite possibly caused her premature death.

This was the last insertion found into Jessica’s tear stained diary.

Sitting at the cluttered desk in the newly assigned cubicle, the investigative newspaper reporter flipped through the pages of the previously printed news article pertaining to the death of a young woman. It stated she was loved by all who’d known her.

“Then why is she dead?” whispered Molly, then she continued reading the article.

“Hey there,” her co-worker announced the cheerful greeting, while leaning against the steel frame of the cubicle, “Want to get a bite to eat?”

“Oh…” she glanced down at her wristwatch, “Is it time for lunch already?”

“Actually it’s more like dinner time,” the handsome, dark haired man with the piercing, blue eyes sounded. “You’ve really been absorbed in whatever you're reading. You've been sitting there all afternoon. What have you found, that’s so interesting about this piece?”

“Jessica Swanson’s pre-mature death. From what I have read her life was picture perfect.”

“Picture perfect? Apparently not, if she committed suicide,” Craig frowned, and shrugged his broad shoulders, “Anyway, what about dinner? Aren’t you hungry? I didn’t see you eating lunch. Call it a day. Let's get out of here."

“If….” she repeated, “if is the key word here. Okay, let's go.”

Molly looked at her wristwatch again, and glanced back at the pile of newspapers, disks, and empty foam cups on her desk. Her hands began moving things around in search of the car keys hidden under the pile. She looked up and smiled once she’d located them.

“Wait a minute,” now Craig was the one postponing their exit, “you’re questioning whether or not it was a suicide? Why? What's the deciding factor?”

Molly kept walking towards the exiting staircase. Her stomach began to growl in reaction to Craig’s reminder she’d missed a meal. Curious at her remark, he trailed after her spitting out inquiries about her afternoon of scrutinizing over the news article.

“Are we going to Bennie’s or feel like walking down to one of the new waterfront eateries?”

“Boy, you should’ve eaten lunch, lady,” Craig chuckled, as he hastened his step to catch up with her fast pace. He grabbed onto her upper arm to slow her down, then answered, “the waterfront. Why won’t you answer my questions about what you read?”

“Well, it’s just a feeling, but,” she reached the entrance of the Delicio Bar and Grill, “here?”

“Sure,” he agreed, after quickly scanning the glass encased menu on the restaurant’s outside brick wall. He opened the door for her portraying the gentleman he was.

Once seated inside, they scooted into the booth, that they had requested by the window overlooking the water’s edge.

“Everything looks so good,” Molly said.

“What sort of feeling?” he asked, “Are you telling me you’re psychic?”

“Yeah, our waitress will be asking for our order in about one minute,” she joked.

“Have you two decided yet?” the waitress asked.

“Oh, now you’re a comedian,” he laughed, then answered the waitress, “ah, no, please give us a few more minutes.”

They sat in silence, as they both read the menu, until they heard the popping chewing gum.

“Ready?”

“A pork chop. I’m having the pork chop dinner,” Molly grinned.

“Gravy on the mashed potatoes?” asked the waitress.

“Gravy on the side, please,” answered Molly, “and, the string beans, instead of the peas.”

“Applesauce comes with it, too,” smiled the waitress, “you wanted unsweetened ice tea, right?”

“Okay, okay you two!” interrupted Craig, and grunted, His impatience exploded, and was eager to finish their previous conversation, “Look, we’ll both have the same order. Make it easy on you. Please, we’re in a hurry here.”

“Yes sir!” the waitress answered, and angrily rushed away to put in their orders.

“Craig? What’s got into you?” Molly asked, really surprised at his outburst, “Hurry? Where are we off to after this? My workday is finished.”

“I’m sorry,” he said, “Let’s just say curiosity killed the cat. I’m dying to know why you have questioned this young woman’s death. It’s being investigated by the best team out there, Michael Sinclair, and Tom Phillips.”

“Craig, they’re missing something,” Molly insisted, “did you read the police report? Everything and anything there is to kill a person was sitting on the nightstand? Bottles of pills, a whiskey bottle, a loaded pistol, bathrobe belt, a huge knife. Oh come on, that scene was definitely staged.”

“She wanted to die,” he stated, as if he had the right to make such a familiar statement.

“Craig, did you know her?” she looked at him queerly. She began wondering what did Craig know about this case, that she didn’t have privy to or had he known Jessica personally?

Molly’s dinner partner put his head down. His lips tightened together, and he sat in silence staring down at his dinner. He lifted his fork, and began moving his string beans around the plate. Then, he poked at one, and made it do a nosedive into the mashed potatoes.

"Craig, are you okay?" Molly asked.

"I'm fine, just hungry," he answered sternly.

"Craig, did you know Jessica?"
