A Brief History...

Mick Faser and Mike Phlange met at the Home Counties Folk festival in late Autumn 1968, they immediately bonded over their shared love of German Dulcimers and the banjo playing of Hickory Williams, the blind Octanegerian Texan. They soon started writing and performing together at folk clubs around Britain and Norway, initially playing to small audiences their reputation grew and they became favourites on the circuit. They recorded their first album on Egg Folk records 'Sounds of Stories' which was well received on both sides of the Irish Sea.

However it was in the early 70's when at the Newport Folk festival they shocked the folk world by going 'Beardless', at the time it was unheard of to perform folk with at the very least a Goatee. Faser and Phlange were booed by sections of the crowd and appeared shocked, after the interval they made some concession to tradition by coming out wearing fake Moustaches but the damage had been done, and the rest of there set only achieved minimal volume on the sing-along parts. This is now seen as a pivotal moment in British folk and within a few years most of the key players on the scene were going Beardless or doing ‘a baldie’ as it became known, however the duo were stung by the experience and recorded the bitter sweet 'Stuck On Singer Street'. Now hailed as a classic it was ponderously reviewed by the critics of the time yet it still managed to spawn a hit single (No 34 UK 79 US) 'Andorian Might'.
