The Farnley and Weston Light Railway

Welcome to my narrow gauge railway running on SM32 track, based in yorkshire, in the whafe valley area near leeds. Running steam and battery locos. At the moment the railway is under constuction as is the website, so please bear with me. The updates page is always worth a look, as I will be updating it after completing work. The entire garden is being remodeled and landscaped so with the weather on my side,(yep! I know I'm in England and Yorkshire is known for its inclement weather). Please feel free to take a look around and explore the site, below is a little story to wet your appetite.

A Breif history

The history of the farnley and weston light railway is steeped in myth! Locals say it ran for 20 years at the turn of the century, but as yet no proof of its existance can be found? It is stated to have run on a gauge of 2 foot with much of the rolling stock and locos been bought second hand from other railways.

The myths state the line ran from Weston Station, which was very accomadating with two loco sheds and a goods yard, with two sidings . The line then followed down the  whafe valley to pool station were there was a single platform and a passing loop. This was to serve the people of pool in whafedale just a short walk from the station. The line continues to Farnley station again with two sheds and goods sidings. The trains would then depart back to weston or follow the line on passed arthington junction, to Cross Green Station, where the train would be reversed to Nevis Park. This is still a small day trip destination to this day.

A small quarry which the line served above Pool Station closed in 1923. It is belived that this is what led to the demise of the line, and as passenger numbers were small the decision was made to pull the plug and sell off the tracks and locos for scrap!

Before the company fell it is reputed that they were in nogotiations with a southern railway. Belived to be down in devon, they were trying to purchase a more powerful loco for the line between Cross Green and Nevis Park. The line is said to have been as steep as 1 in 60 for two miles. Unfortunatley Lyn was never saved and the loco was shipped to brazil where it could still lie dormant and decaying.

At last the hard landscaping is nearly over, just the decking to go in and then work can commence proper on railway!
