Commentary

Since The Stranger has gone from being a one-shot picture to a miniseries in its own right, I thought that the project warranted a short explanation.

Strangely enough, it all started with my submission for the February '06 Duelling Circle Challenge at KotOR Fan Media, His Burning Desire, which was about the fallen Republic pilot Atton, who acquired a taste for killing Jedi, and whose emotions had become so warped by the Dark Side that the only way he could express his desire for females was with death. Admittedly, inspiration for *that* picture came from real-life serial killers like Ed Kemper and Dennis Nilsen, whose fear of isolation led to their killing people so that they wouldn't leave.

A KFM friend, Mizzillan, made the following comment about the picture:

"I remember this for the recent Challenge...and I wanted to make a comment about Atton there, but thought it would seem 'creepy' so I'll mention it here... DS Atton reminds me of Ted Bundy, the guy who killed an estimated 30+ girls, mostly college students. He was tall, dark and charming too. And your depiction of Atton looks like some of his photos, yikes."

The whole "tall, dark and handsome guy who's actually a murderer" thing gave me the inspiration to draw the picture, The Stranger, which bore only the ambiguous description:

Five days later when her body was found, all they could remember was that she'd gone off with a rather nice-looking young man.

... which, I suppose, bore all the implications it needed. It had all the subtlety of a nuclear missile launcher in Times Square, but hey, it does the job, right?

Later, however, while simultaneously drawing True Love Is and deliberating The Stranger's psychology and motivation, I came to the realisation that he wasn't a predator of any sort, but that whatever shady things he did, he did out of love and faithfulness. Thereafter, he acquired the name Stephen Garrity (because the Garrity Scottish family crest bears the legend 'Semper Fidelis': Always Faithful) - and the rest of his story is in these pictures.
