ARLINGTON, VA October 11, 2007 – The Cernosek Family of Crofton, MD and staff members from local radio station WASH fm 97.1 helped raise money for FARA “Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance” at first annual fund raising event at the Front Page in Arlington Thursday October 11th 2007.
FARA’s mission is to slow, stop and reverse the damage done by Friedreich’s ataxia -- a rare, hereditary, life-shortening, neurological disorder that is usually diagnosed in childhood and causes loss of coordination and strength in the arms and legs; impairment of vision, hearing and speech; scoliosis, diabetes; a life-threatening heart condition; full-time wheel-chair use by age twenty, and for which there is currently no treatment or cure.
The idea for the event started when the Cernosek’s youngest son John was diagnosed with the disease. The fact that there was no known cure propelled them to want to do more to help not only their son but other kids afflicted with this debilitating disease. The event was a wonderful success raising $1000 over estimate and raising incredible awareness for a cause rarely known outside of those afflicted.
“Next year,” states Laura Cernosek (sister to John), “we will build on the successes of this year and make an even greater impact to help with research for Friedreich’s Ataxia.” Most recently, Bridget Moynahan formally with Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has donated money to FARA.
Over 50 attendees paid $10 at the door and donated generously to the raffle and auction items.
