James M Frazer

James M Frazer was born 8 November 1805 in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky, son of Jeremiah Frazer and Martha Walters, daughter of Richard Walter. He was the grandson of James Frazer and  great grandson of William Frazer of Scotland and Augusta County, Virginia. James was the eldest of 8 children. His father, Jeremiah, served in the War of 1812. He is listed as private in the Roll of Captain Thomas Lewis Company of Infantry of the Kentucky Militia.

Residing at Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky he married 3 times and had 16 children. The marriages and children of James Frazer are on the decendancy chart. From the records at Stanford, Kentucky James Frazer is mentioned as a deputy sheriff in 1840, 1844 and 1846. In 1840, the February term of court he was appointed guardian to Sally W Leavel ,orphan of James Leavel, deceased.

James married first to Catherine Turner Leavel, daughter of James Leavel and Mildred Turner. The marriage must haven taken place in Madison County, Kentucky as it is recorded at Richmond as having been preformed on September 1827. Arch Turner is given as having signed the marriage bond. From Deed Book “S”, page 218, James Leavell and Milly, his wife to James Frazier for $800., tract of land etc…dated 5 June 1829. The family bible record of James Frazer’s bible gives the marriage date to Catherine Turner Leavel the same as the court house records. His second marriage to Mary Edith Stephenson is on record at Stanford, Lincoln County, 8 November 1842. Thus date is also the same as recorded in the bible. His third marriage to Martha Berrisford is recorded at Stanford and dated 15 March 1849. The record in the bible is …March 1849, the exact date is mutilated and not readable. Martha Berrisford was an English lady born in Liverpool England and was teaching school when she married James.

Moving to Texas with his family in 1852 he settled  first at Washington County , then to the old town of Lyons near the line between Fayette and Colorado Counties. There is no evidence that James Frazer’s two sons, James Monroe and Milton Frazer accompanied the family to Texas . A charter member of the Schulenburg, Texas Masonic Lodge he was a member of Lyons Lodge No. 195 and a Lyons postmaster from 7 Feb 1867- 22 Mar 1871.

His will is recorded in Fayette County, Texas under the date of 1885, the year of his death ,and  he is buried in the Navidad Baptist Church Cemetery in Schulenburg, Fayette County, Texas.
