Friday's Child

After a successful 2002 Will took most of 2003 out of the limelight to write and record the follow up to From Now On. He enlisted the help of Annie Lennox writer and producer Stephen Lipson. Fridays Child saw him work with almost none of the same writers from his debut album. He kept Stannard, Gallagher and Hale although their contributions would end up as B-Sides. Instead he hooked up with Eg White who gave Will his biggest hit to date in the form of Leave Right Now, White also contributed Going My Way and Out Of My Mind to the Friday's Child project. On release Will came up against the years biggest album White Flag by Dido. However he managed to gain the top spot and a running battle for the number one and two positions ensured between the two albums for months. Before the release of the album a tracklisting found its way onto the internet which include a song called Take Control which would not appear on the final version of the album. The song was due to appear the album after Will recieved a letter from a fan experiencing domestic violence. However unfortunately Will felt that the song did not fit well with the rest of the album as was removed and later added to Your Game as a B-Side. It was also during the writing of Friday's Child that Will recorded a track entitled Madness which would later apear on Keep On. Will had hoped to include it on Friday's Child but was unable to work it in time for inclusion.

Promo Cover

Released in March 2004 Your Game was Will's second single to be co-written by him. (The first single being Don't Let Me Down). Your Game could not have been more different to Leave Right Now as it was a lively and upbeat song. There had been hopes that Your Game to follow Leave Right Now and give Will another number one hit unfortunately that was not to be as Your Game entered the UK charts at number three behind Usher. Your Game was a jazzier song backed with the Metro Voices Gospel Band. The video saw Will performing on a theatre stage with moving backgrounds. Your Game also became the first Will Young single to spend only one week with the top ten.

Friday's Child

Promo Cover

The third and final single to be taken from Will's second album was the title track Friday's Child. For single release the track had to be significantly edited as the original album version stood at 9:02. For the first time the single was backed with remixes instead of b-sides. The remixes came from Andy Cato. Along with these mixes Will included a version of the smash hit Outkast single Hey Ya! which he performed at a Radio 1 live session. On release Friday's Child entered the UK charts at number four and quickly fell down and out the chart. To date it is Will's worst performing single chart wise spending only six weeks inside the top 75. The video for Friday's Child saw Will rise from amateur swimmer to olympic champion who swims the English Channel. The video has two endings. The first ending sees Will cross the English channel to France welcomed by supporters but within seconds they lose interest and leave. Will heads back into the sea and swims back to England. This ending wa sent to T.V. The alternative ending could be found on the Maxi single and ended with Will being interviewed by some television reporter.
