The Battery Hen Welfare Trust has found homes for many thousands of battery hens so far since it began in October 2003. The charity takes birds just before they are due for slaughter and re-homes them as family pets. The birds are only around 12 - 18 months of age, many of these birds will still lay but this cannot be guaranteed.
Their aim is to see rising demand for eggs from welfare friendly systems and diminishing demand for caged eggs both in the shell and in processed food products. The Battery Hen Welfare Trust is unique in that it does NOT condemn the farmers that produce eggs in battery systems, but redresses the balance when blame is placed on their shoulders.
The trust will never knowingly rehome a sick hen. You need to put your name down with your local rescue coordinator. Expect to pay around 50p per hen.
If you think you can offer a good home to some battery hens, please visit the website of the BHWT at http://www.bhwt.org.uk/ for more information.
If you cannot adopt any hens, there are many other ways in which you can help, one of these is to sponsor a hen. Please see the website for more details of this.
