| BEAUTY: AT-HOME SPA TREATMENTS |
|
Let the gazillionaires head to their fancy spas -- all you have to do is head to the kitchen. You can find some of the best spa treatments nature has to offer right in the fridge or pantry. Here are five great beauty recipes that just might taste as good as they work.
Honey Cleansing Scrub
1 Tablespoon honey
2 Tablespoon finely ground almonds
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice Mix together and rub gently onto your face. The honey helps to moisturize, almonds help exfoliate, and the lemon helps to diminish redness and blotches. How sweet is that?
Strawberries & Cream Toner
2 ounces ripe strawberries
1/2 pint lowfat milk Mix ingredients in a blender and strain through a paper towel. With a cotton ball, smooth the liquid onto your face, and wipe clean with a dry towel. The acids in both the milk and the strawberries brighten dull-looking skin. (It leaves you smelling berry good, too!)
Avocad-Glow Mask
1 whole soft avocado, peeled and chopped
A squeeze of lemon Mash the avocado in a bowl with a fork until smooth, and mix in lemon juice. Apply the paste to your face and let sit for 20 minutes. (Avocado has natural moisturizing properties to make skin super-soft.) Rinse with warm water and watch your friends get green with envy.
Salty Body Glow
1 cup fine sea salt
1/2 cup grape-seed, olive, or almond oil Stir ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl. Spread the mixture onto damp skin and massage in -- the grainy salt whisks away dead skin cells while the oil seals in moisture. Concentrate on the rough spots like elbows and heels. Rinse well, and check out that smooth bod!
Sweet Vanilla Soak
1 cup sweet almond oil (light olive oil may be substituted)
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup liquid soap (plain or flower-scented)
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract Measure the oil into a medium bowl, and then carefully stir in remaining ingredients until mixture is fully blended. Pour into a squeeze bottle and add about a quarter of the mix to a warm bathtub (this recipe will make enough for four baths). Steep and soak your cares away. |

| BEAUTY: 4 STEPS TO LONG-LASTING PROM MAKEUP |
|
For smudge-proof, budge-proof makeup, you've come to the right place. C'mon, who wants to spend all night retouching her look in the girls' room? Use our tried-and-true steps for making sure that your beautiful face stays in place -- through the photos, the dancing, and the after-party smooching.
LIPS
Prime: Start by applying a matte foundation, concealer, or an eye shadow base to lips as a primer (it'll give the color something to adhere to).
Line: Slip on a lip-liner -- it really does help keep color corralled -- in a shade that matches or is slightly lighter than your lipstick shade. (No gross outline for you!) We like to color in the whole lip for a little added color kick.
Color: Put on your lipstick, and then pat with a tissue. Repeat two more times. And no skimping -- it really does make a difference.
Dust: The ultimate sealer: Place a piece of tissue over your lips and, using an oversize brush or powder puff, apply loose powder on top of the tissue. Remove tissue and apply one more layer of lipstick.
We love: Cover Girl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor, about $9. It comes with a separate moisture stick and stays on without leaving your lips feeling like sandpaper.
FOUNDATION
Dot: With your finger, dot a longwearing foundation on forehead, cheeks, and chin.
Blend: The jury is out on whether a sponge is necessary here -- some say fingers are better blenders. We think you should test both ways a few days before the big day to get a feel for what works best on your face.
Conceal: On top of your foundation, apply a concealer to problem spots (you know the drill: under eyes, in the creases of your nose, on blemishes).
Set: With a big powder puff (oh-so-Hollywood glam), dust on yellow-toned powder. Use a generous amount, because more is better here. Then, simply dust away excess with a brush. (FYI: Yellow balances out dark spots.)
We love: Urban Decay Surreal Skin Liquid Foundation, $24. It changes to a powder, so it's ultra-light and won't cake like thicker formulas.
EYES
Prime: Using your finger, apply a shadow base -- which will help color stay in place and keep it from creasing.
Line: Liquid liner is the key here. If you're not used to it -- practice, practice, practice. It goes on like a non-smudge, super-fabulous Sharpie marker. Stay very close to the lash line. It makes lashes look fuller.
Color: Sweep on your color over the entire lid using a shadow brush. (Don't use your fingers, which are covered with slippery oils.) We like loose shadow powders, which go on and stay on like face powder.
Lash: This is the smudge culprit. Apply two coats, letting each dry thoroughly. If you can bear the thicker feeling (and suffer the fussiness of getting it off at the end of the night), stick with a waterproof blend. If not, apply regular mascara with one thin coat of waterproof on top.
We love: Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara, about $5. It's a cult classic -- and loved by countless makeup professionals.
BEST OVERALL ALL-NIGHT-LONG PRODUCT BeneFit She Laq, $24, a makeup sealant. It comes with a set of brushes for use over eyeliner, lipstick, mascara, and brows to literally lock in the color. |

Do's and dont's |
THE DON’Ts
Don’t Fight Your Hair Curly girls want to go straight. Straight-haired girls want curls. Why fight Mother Nature? If you have lovely ringlets, bring out their beauty by accentuating the curl. Don’t spend hours torturing your hair into a straight style when others would kill for your do. The same goes for pin-straight girls. Play up your sleek tresses by braiding the front sections for a clean, natural look.
Don’t Last-Minute Anything The day before prom is the absolute worst time to make changes to your hair. If you hate it, you’re stuck with it. That means no color, no chemical process (like straightening or perming), and no cutting your hair right before prom (unless it’s just a trim). Not only could you walk out with a hairdo you hate, the smell from the chemical treatment will linger all through prom night.
Don’t Overstyle Avoid using too many styling products, like gels, pomades, or shine enhancers. Too much will overload your hair. And while it may seem like the only way to get your hair to behave, the goop can leave your hair a greasy mess by the end of the night. The same applies to styling tools. Too much heat from your straightening iron, curling iron, or hairy dryer is a recipe for disaster!
THE DOs
Do Treat Your Locks Soft, flowing hair is always in style for prom. Prep your hair well in advance of the big night. Moisturize with a thick conditioning treatment once a week for a month. Terax Original Crema is a great all-around conditioner that can be used daily or once a week as a deep conditioner. ($20, Sephora.com)
Do Accessorize Short-haired girls need not despair -- there’s no reason you can’t look glamorous on prom night. Hair accessories (flower hair pins, butterfly clips, magnetic gems) are a great way to put some girly spunk into your cut. For longer cuts, try crystal barrettes or hair sticks for that special decorative touch.
Do Let It All Hang Down Romantic curls and waves are all the rage for Prom 2004. The runways and red carpet are overrun with loose bed-hair bombshells -- think Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Mischa Barton. So forget about taming your tresses. A few flyaway strands are just what this prom season ordered! |
Ways to have fun on ur own |
Prom date fell through? Broke up with your boyfriend? Just too darn fabulous to share the spotlight? It's all good. If you're going stag on the big night, get ready to have some fun. Here are five sure-fire ways to kick up your heels and have a blast solo.
1. Shake Your Groove Thing Who says you need a partner to have a good time on the dance floor? Not us, nor the thousands of girls who've had to sit out their favorite songs just because their dates weren't in the mood -- that's for sure. This is your chance to get the biggest bang for your prom ticket buck. Grab your friends and start a riot under the disco ball whenever the music moves you. Make a game out of it: Bonus points for anyone who can get a prom chaperone to join in and bust a move.
2. Smile for the Camera Believe it or not, prom photos make even better keepsakes when there's no date in the picture. (You couldn't pay us to show you our prom shots.) You and your pals have spent hours primping -- your dresses are stunning and your tresses look great. Make sure this picture-perfect moment goes down in posterity by getting some group photos for your album.
3. Singles Unite! Don't be surprised if you show up and find that you're not the only one short of a duo. You know why you came alone, but what about the others? What are their stories? Play "What happened to your prom date?" and see how much fun relating to your classmates can be when you all have something in common. Also, why not try filling your dance card with your friends' dates. (Unlike your paired-up pals, you get to order the sample platter instead of just one dish!) Make the rounds and see who's up for a quick dance.
4. Flirt with the Band/DJ The best thing about prom entertainers is that they're open to suggestion. Since you don't have a date to worry about, you can check out the sexy lead singer or DJ to your heart's content, make small talk, and -- best of all -- ensure that all your requests are on the play list.
5. Judge for Yourself Dance contests are well and good, but why stop there? Make like Joan Rivers and start your own "Best Dressed" list. Come up with categories like "Best Dress," "Best Style," and "Best Evening Bag." While you're at it, make a "Most Eligible Singles" list. When you're done counting the votes, chat the guys up, and see what develops. Who knows? Maybe they've been dying to talk to you all along.
