Newton Heath/Manchester United FC

Newton Heath, was a local Manchester team which started playing in 1878. They were a group of railway workers from Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways. The ground was at North Road on Monsall Road. The team changing room was in a pub down the road from the ground, called the Three Crowns. Their nickname was "The Heathens".

1958 THE DREAM THAT DIED - THE BUSBY BABES

During the 1950's British teams were starting to play in Europe. Matt Busby wanted to take Manchester United there but the FA was agaainst it. Busby persevered and took his team to Europe. But tragedy struck. They played against Red Star Belgrade and they were returning home. The airport was covered in a blanket of snow and it was still snowing hard. The plane made three attempts to take off. On the third attempt came the disaster. The plane barely got off the ground before it crashed taking with it the dream that was 'The Busby Babes'.
There were 44 people on BEA Flight 609 from Munich to Manchester. Twenty three of them died including eight Busby Babes.

Ten Years On

At last!!!!!!

1968 Champions of Europe!

On 29 May 1968 (Brian Kidd's 19th birthday), a dream came true, United beat Benfica  4-1  in the European Cup final at Wembley. They were the first English club to win the European Cup (Glasgow Celtic were the first British club to win the trophy the year before). Bobby Charlton scored the first goal putting United in the lead. Graca of Benfica equalised. The game went into extra time. George Best put United back in the lead and then Bobby Charlton and Brian Kidd ensured the trophy went to Old Trafford. This was the realisation of Matt Busby's dream.

What a Year!!!!!

1999 The Treble!

This was the greatest season in Manchester United's history, winning the Premiership Championship, FA Cup and European Cup all in the space of 10 days in May 1999.

The league title race was  between United and Arsenal. On the final day of the league season, the first part of the historic treble was completed. Manchester United beat Spurs at Old Trafford, pipping Arsenal to top spot by a single point.

The second stage of the Treble came a week later when Manchester United beat Newcastle United in the FA Cup Final. This was their third double in five years.

The Manchester United entourage were in dreamland four days later when  they won the European Cup by scoring two goals in injury time turning almost certain defeat into the most unlikeliest of victories. The first ever Treble.
