Hilary Duff admires actress Natalie Portman for doing what few celebrities succeed at - keeping her personal life out of the spotlight.

Hilary, when she was just 16, hopes to follow in Portman's footsteps and focus on her career, without the complications that fame and fortune can bring.

Duff, 18, says, "I hate the way everything you do ends up in the gossip columns."

"Natalie's unusual because she manages to keep her private life to herself."

"She's so talented and for her it's just about the work."

Teen queen Hilary Duff is set to scare her fans as the possible star of the next 'Poltergeist' movie.

The actress/singer is the frontrunner to take over the role of the spooky Carol Anne Freeling from late child star Heather O'Rourke in the new movie 'Poltergeist: Kayeri.'

Craig T. Nelson has reportedly already signed on to reprise his role as Stephen Freeling, but movie insiders claim the project has stalled for the moment, following the sale of MGM to Sony.

THIS IS JUST A RUMOR!

Aly & AJ are Alyson and Amanda Joy Michalka, 16- and 14-year-old sisters who are the latest pop sensation churned out of the Disney machine. Aly co-stars in the hit Disney Channel series, Phil of the Future and plays the lead in the Disney Channel original movie Now You See It.... AJ has acted on HBO's Six Feet Under, WB's Birds of Prey and has had recurring roles on the CBS drama The Guardian, the Fox-TV comedy Oliver Beene, and the soap opera General Hospital. But together they have been playing piano since the age of six, and their compositions make up the bulk of their debut album.

For reasons beyond the scope of this review, I had Hilary Duff's Most Wanted queued up after this album and I was several tracks into the latter's album until I realized I wasn't listening to the sisters anymore. This should give you some idea of the musical territory covered in this pop confection. Their vocal talents far surpass Duff's, but that's a group that could arguably include everybody. They aspire beyond their pop trappings by tackling subjects relevant to their age group. "Protecting Me," speaks of the vulnerability of being a kid, and "I Am One of Them" addresses child kidnappings. While admirable, the songwriting leaves a little to be desired, as evidenced in the latter: "It's hard to look outside my door/With all the news reports and more/Yet I would do my part and stay alive/For all the kids out there who are getting hurt/It could have happened to me/Can you make me believe/This could have a happy end/Cos I am one of them."

Their gifted vocals open the album before the track launches into its rocking chorus. "Rush" was previously featured on the compilation Disney Girlz Rock and sets the album's tone of encouragement. It is one of many tracks with grammatically-challenged lyrics ("Don't let nobody tell you your life is over") and English teachers everywhere could fill an entire course dissecting its inaccuracies. The next track, "No One," was featured in the movie Ice Princess and at times sounds a bit like Avril Lavigne, a similarity hinted at throughout the rest of the songs. There's a nice blend of loud and soft music, with the sisters' guitar and piano playing evident in the mix. The album concludes with their hit cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's "Do You Believe In Magic" and an energetic take on Katrina and the Waves' ultimate feel-good "Walking on Sunshine" (which also makes an appearance on the Herbie: Fully Loaded soundtrack). This album is being released in Christian retail stores with a bonus song called "Never Far Behind," a tale of a friend's unconditional love that concludes by imparting that God is that same kind of friend.

Aly & AJ have obvious talent although their songwriting needs to mature. They try, but in the end the album lack any real depth, though their willingness to talk about tough subjects and shed a positive light on them notches them above their vainglorious teen pop peers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kids, teens and tweens can immerse themselves in all things Hilary when Hilary Duff World hits America Online on Monday.

The dedicated area will appear on America Online's children's service, KOL. Hilary Duff World will feature the pop star's favorite books, music and movies and include a monthly advice column where she responds to e-mailed questions. Duff also will contribute weekly blogs to RED, AOL's teen site.

"I'm going to do a lot of things that feel more personal with the kids," the 18-year-old actress-singer said. "I'll keep them updated with what's going on in my life, touring, music, movies and filming. I might even do something with my dog. You can do anything you want now with the Internet."

Duff said her Chihuahua, Lola, accompanies her everywhere.

The content on Hilary Duff World will differ from that on her Web site, she said.

Duff, who gained fame as television's Lizzie McGuire, recently returned to Los Angeles from a world tour to support her latest album, "Most Wanted," released in August. She will appear in the film "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" later this year.

Hilary Forms A Bond With Espionage Hotties In New Video

She's Duff, Hilary Duff. She likes to be shaken, not stirred. And she's going to be a Bond girl in her latest video.

When the singer shoots a clip for "Beat of My Heart" in Los Angeles with director Phil Harder next week, she's going to pay tribute to all the girls James Bond's loved before.

"She's always been a huge James Bond fan," label rep Tina Dunn said. "She watched those movies with her sister growing up, and she loved the Bond girls, because they were always so stylish, and she's stylish. So the concept is that this video has that hip sensibility of those Bond movies, and she's looking more mature."

The opening sequence of the video emulates the classic title sequences of Bond films from the silhouetted 1960s to present-day, high-tech 3-D designs, until one of those graphics becomes a wire frame of a beating electronic heart, like a graphic X-ray, which pulls out with each beat. As the camera pulls out, the heart grows and weaves to become Hilary.

While Hilary won't quite take on Pussy Galore, Plenty O'Toole, Holly Goodhead, or any of the other delicious double-entendre-dubbed heroines of the Bond canon, she becomes a Bond girl in spirit, shifting from era to era with different looks, her hair blowing all the time, flying around in graphic silhouettes.

Instead of cutting from image to image, the shots evolve in a Bond-like style, as shapes take on different forms to reveal something else. In one look, Hilary will perform in silhouette, with a microphone where a gun would otherwise be. In another, her band will be the silhouette.

The beat of the song will control the edit, zapping the view in and out, until a lull in the song, when the view travels back into her eyes, through her skin, and back to her beating heart.

Perhaps this explains Hilary Duff's incredibly shrinking body: She's participating in an anti-obesity campaign to encourage kids to eat right and exercise via a PSA that will hit the airwaves in California this week
"Even though I spend an hour in the makeup chair before each show, that alone isn't going to make me look good," the singer says in the upbeat radio message. "All the makeup in the world can't make up for poor nutrition. ... I have to stay fit and eat right because, hello! What goes inside is going to eventually show on the outside."says in the upbeat radio message. "All the makeup in the world can't make up for poor nutrition. ... I have to stay fit and eat right because, hello! What goes inside is going to eventually show on the outside.

Initiated by the California School Nutrition Association, Duff's PSA is but one part of a campaign called "Stay fit. Eat right. Looking good, California!" that is supposed to help make the state the nation's model for health, nutrition and fitness, at Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's behest. The campaign's Web site, StayFitEatRight.org, also includes healthy-meals recipes for kids as well as forums for them to put forth questions to chefs and personal trainers.

"Our profession feeds children every day in California schools," CSNA President Rhonda DeVaux said. "As their day-to-day nutritional advocates, we saw the need to be at the forefront of change through legislative efforts, education and better communication with kids and their families. This campaign is a good start."

Duff, who recorded two versions nine months ago, also espouses in the PSA the virtues of healthy snacks such as fruits or vegetables, "because they love me as much as I love them," as well as eating well-balanced meals. She tells listeners they'll be able to find what they're looking for in the nutritionist-planned meals available at public school cafeterias, which is "like having your own private chef watching your diet."

Haylie Duff phoned in to the Jackie & Bender Show on KISS 106.1 FM in Seattle to promote her 13-episode guest-spot on '7th Heaven'. Duff talked about her schedule which also includes a couple films. What began as an annoying phone call from a solicitor turned into a wish come true for a young Ottawa girl. Samantha Leix, 11, got to meet teen pop sensation, Hilary Duff, in person before her Aug. 16 concert at Peoria Civic Center, thanks to the Kids Wish Network solicitor who called her mother asking for a donation.

“The solicitor asked me if I’d like to make a donation, or if I knew anyone with an immune deficiency disorder,” said Samantha’s mother, Diana Goetsch. “I looked at Samantha and said, ‘Yes, I do. My daughter.’”

Samantha was diagnosed in April 2004 with systemic lupus, fibromyalgia and arthritis. Her ailments cause her frequent pain, make her susceptible to nearly all colds and viruses, and cause a variety of other symptoms like frequent cold and hot spells.

Hilary's diary entry at www.hilaryduff.com

9/26/05 Los Angeles,CA!!!
HELLO everyone!!! It has definately been a long time. I have been sooo busy. We have just wrapped the "Still Most Wanted Tour" this past weekend in Puyallup, WA and the tour was awesome. You guys rock! Thank you so much for being so supportive of my music. I love you guys. Well, since Cheaper By the Dozen 2 is coming out soon I have interviews scheduled all day today. So, it's pretty much a "press" day for me. OMG, I am so excited that I am going to be 18 this Wednesday the count down has begun!! Thanks to everyone who has sent birthday cards and letters; I can't read them all but the letters that I have seen were great and very much appreciated. Gotta go! Press Day! Love ya'll, Hil xoxo

The Puyallup Fair got a small dose of Hollywood in the form of the feisty 5-foot-4 inch firecracker starlet-turned-pop-star Hilary Duff, who ended her summer tour behind her chart-topping "Most Wanted" album in front of a rapturous crowd Sunday.

Dressed in desert fatigue Capri pants, high heels and a white tank top, Duff and her band played close to 90 minutes worth of material including "Fly," "I Am" and others. She exuded sass and energy while singing and running all over the stage. During "Mr. James Dean" she even got down on her knees and sang while on her back.

Duff's liveliness and spunk were a kick to watch and her performance made the show worth the costly ticket price of more than $50. However, it was nearly impossible to get away from the marketing and merchandising machine that assisted Duff's rise to stardom at the sold-out concert.

Police officers stood by and guarded one merchandise booth, which was sectioned off by caution tape. Although the policemen were there to direct foot traffic, by the way the booth was guarded you'd think Duff was hocking her own key chains and tote bags. Before entering the merchandise line fans were told the wait would be 30 minutes after being given fliers that listed the 28 various pieces of Duff swag available for purchase.

Ranging from $50 black fleur zipper hooded sweatshirts to $5 pink heart wristbands there was something for everyone on the merchandise menu and it seemed like everyone wanted something. By the time Duff took the stage nearly all the fans on the infield blended into a sea of pink, black and white Duff T-shirts and hand-made signs. It almost felt like the show was more about Duff's stuff than Duff herself.

Marketing aside, Duff's show was family-friendly fun and a great way to send off the 105th edition of the fair. Her wholesome image and better than average voice mean her star can only keep rising, even if the costs of attending the concert would make for a great credit card commercial.

Turquoise Hilary Duff spaghetti tank top: $35. Fleur scrolly Hilary Duff charm bracelet $15. Cost of seeing a Hollywood starlet on the Puyallup Fair's closing day: priceless. That is if you don't count the $57 ticket price.

Remember that Kelly Clarkson said joking that she wanted a fight with Hilary? (If not loook around the site.) Anyway...here is what Benji, Joel's brother and bandmate in GC posted in his blog:

"My mom told me if I didn't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. So I won't say 'Amercian Idol' sux, but it does make me laugh when someone like Kelly Clarkson disses someone like Hilary Duff [apparently referring to Clarkson's recent joking comment that she wanted to start a beef with fellow Texans Duff and Beyonce Knowles], cause let's not forget it, Kelly (BTW-Kanye West thinks you have a nice ass, I saw him look at it one time) (me, I prefer the more fit look) anyways - you were a 'contestant' on a TV show. Hilary made herself. Ok ok I am a little partial to Hilary becasue I know what a great person she is and how talented she is first hand. Its all good I just think it is funny how us little humans lose perspective."

Madden apparently had second thoughts about his posting, adding a new message on Sunday saying: "Where did all my blogs go? O well. I will check in a little later, I have to run to English class. See ya on the mesage board! You guys be good.....xoxo Benji Madden the one&only can't clone me ya'll!!" He then linked to KellyClarkson.com with '#1 ya'll!!" as a description.

The new gang war in L.A. is between the Balenciagas and the Fendis.

At Tuesday night's Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party, rival gang leaders Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff divided guests into two factions on opposite sides of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel pool, then exchanged ominous glares all night long.

Yesterday reps for the warring teen queens tried to downplay the poolside staring match.

"Lindsay came to the event to support her sister Aliana, who was featured in the Young Hollywood issue," said Lohan's flack.

Duff's rep scoffed: "Hilary and her sister, Haylie, got there at 9 p.m. and stayed 40 minutes. They didn't even see Lindsay."

On Lohan's side: Kirsten Dunst, the incredible shrinking Nicole Richie, and Richie's fiancé, DJ AM. On Team Duff: Kimberly Stewart, Duff's boyfriend, Joel Madden, Haylie Duff, Lohan's ex Wilmer Valderrama, Greek shipping heir (and Mary-Kate Olsen boy toy) Stavros Niarchos and the "Laguna Beach" kids.

An eyewitness reports: "There was a lot of tension, a lot of evil looks. Nobody went into the other's territory."

They're apparently still carrying a grudge over their long-ago misguided rivalry for the affections of Aaron Carter. Lowdown hears that relations are raw because Hilary Duff recently rebuffed Lohan's olive branch.

Says an insider: "Lindsay called Hilary and was like, 'Enough?' And Hilary just said, 'No f-ing way,' and hung up on her. Hilary's a wolf in sheep's clothing, so Linds is done."

Duff's rep denied the hangup, claiming the two have never spoken on the phone.

But the smell of aggression was everywhere. A Lowdown spy reports that after Niarchos was carded, he threw his plastic at the bartender's face and said disgustedly, "Get me the good stuff. Patron, not Cuervo."

HOLLYWOOD — With her new collection Most Wanted still high on the Billboard albums chart, it's hard to believe that Hilary Duff would have expected anything less. But now the megastar is admitting that she worried about how her new music would be received by fans.

"All the responsibility was on me, because I went into the studio without my label saying, 'Work with this person' or 'Sing about this.' " — Hilary Duff

"I felt a little nervous when the album was coming out because I did it with Joel and Benji [Madden], and you never really know [what's going to happen]," Duff said recently. "It was the first time where all the responsibility was on me, because I went into the studio without my label or my manager saying, 'Work with this person' or 'Do this' or 'Sing about this.'

"But it was cool to actually feel like you're making music, and then to have the album be #1 for two weeks in a row (see "Hilary Duff Still Most Wanted As LP Holds At #1") and to see so many fans go out and buy it, I feel very supported and lucky," Duff said.

The actress-turned-singer, who recently confirmed her relationship with Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden (see "Hilary Duff, Joel Madden Go Public With Lovestyle Of The Rich And Famous"), recruited Joel and twin brother Benji to produce three tracks on her Most Wanted greatest-hits LP, including the current single, "Wake Up." The album scored Duff her first Billboard #1, selling more than 200,000 copies its first week out.

Duff and Madden arrived side-by-side at the Us Weekly Young Hollywood Hot 20 bash held at DJ AM's new club, LAX, in Hollywood (see "Joel And Benji Madden Record 'Clash Meets N.W.A' Track With Game"). The event celebrated some of the brightest young talent in Tinseltown, including Paris Hilton, "Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria, Ashlee Simpson, Christina Aguilera and, of course, Miss Duff.

The blonde pop tart attributes much of her album's success to the work of the Dead Executives (the Maddens' production team) and says she wants to work with them again, as long as they'll have her.

"[Those guys] are so much fun to be around. I did not feel like I was working, and I felt 100 percent comfortable," she said. "I [would love] to do a whole album with them."

For now Duff is sifting through video treatments for her second single, "Beat of My Heart," which she'll shoot at the end of the month. Don't look for any cameos by those Madden brothers — "not this time around" at least, according to Duff.

Soon the singer will embark on the international leg of her Still Most Wanted Tour (see "Hilary Duff Launches Tour Amid Sea Of Glow Sticks, In [Gasp!] Only One Outfit"), trekking around Europe in October and hitting Japan and Australia after taking a short break in November.

And with a milestone birthday fast approaching (the singer turns 18 on September 28), Duff says she's heard murmurs of a surprise bash being planned in her honor.

"I've heard some stuff around my household about some party being thrown, but I don't think I'm supposed to know anything about that," she laughed.

Duff has also been reading through a mound of scripts in search of her next acting role, but she says she hasn't fallen in love with any particular project yet.

"If I find a project that I really like, then I'll take time off to do a movie," she said. "But for now I'm just focusing on my music."

It’s time for music fans to set their sights on the Puyallup Fair grandstand, which every September attracts a diverse array of chart-topping artists and veteran performers. Granted, attendance was slightly down last year. “We had unseasonable rain,” fair spokeswoman Karen LaFlamme said. “Usually September is a dry month, and it made an exception for us.”

But with dry weather and another solid lineup in place – the likes of Brad Paisley, Kelly Clarkson and Hilary Duff this year – fair grandstand attendance is poised to bounce back. “One of our big sellers is Hilary Duff,” LaFlamme said. “She just has a real following with the younger market. And she’s doing so much now to increase her visibility.”

Hilary will have a concert in Puyallup, Washington. (Western Washington Fair) at 3 p.m on September 25th.

Kelefa Sanneh of the New York Times profiled the romance and the musical collaboration between 26-year-old Joel Madden of Good Charlotte and soon to be legal Hilary Duff. "There's something satisfying about this pairing, both visually and commercially," Sanneh said. "To see Madden hand in hand with Duff is to be reminded of all the things they share, starting with their fans. (And ending, perhaps, with their mascara.) It's hard to think of a more elegant expression of the love affair between punk and pop."

Every year, retailers and research groups send out reams of information about what parents should be buying their children to wear back to school. Old Navy's survey found, for example, that parents expect to spend $199 per child for back-to-school clothes. They also discovered those parents want their female offspring to dress like Hilary Duff and males to emulate Will Smith. Paris Hilton and Johnny Depp are not considered fashion role models by parents.

International superstar and multi-platinum Hollywood Records recording artist Hilary Duff announced today that she will donate $200,000 to the American Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in the gulf coast states stricken by this disaster.

The American Red Cross is setting up shelters, food, water and critical assistance for the thousands of displaced and homeless people in the area, while USA Harvest is supplying food to those shelters. Hilary's donation to USA Harvest will result in over 300,000 cans of food being donated to those in need. In addition, Hilary is encouraging her fans to bring canned food to her concerts that will be collected and distributed to the region. Hilary is also encouraging her fans via an alert on her website asking them to send money to both charities.

Hilary said, "It's heartbreaking to see the devastation on TV. People are missing family members, and they have absolutely nothing left, not even food or water. I want to do everything I can to help those who have survived to help rebuild their lives."

Giving to those in need is nothing new to Hilary Duff. Her philanthropic activities are far and wide, whether it be Kids With a Cause or USA Harvest.

A mum wrote a letter to the Herald Music Reviewer, commenting on an article in that paper. I don't know which article she is talking about, but still... I thought you guys might be interested in what she wrote to them:

"To The Editor:
This is a note I recently sent to Jason Johnson who writes your music review column.

I read your article this morning, and although you think you had a brain lapse, I think you hit the nail on the head! I have an eight-year old daughter who is all but obsessed with Hilary Duff and, like I have told my husband, she is practically the only positive role model left.

She hasn´t gone from girl-next-door to you-know-what-down-the-street to be popular. She has let her true talent guide her career and I thank her for it.

I also would like to thank you for your article. Maybe a parent who doesn´t see what the big deal about her young impressionable daughter idolizing Britney or Christina is will wake up and see that we live in a world that judges your success on the amount of skin you are willing to bear.

So, for all of us mothers of little girls, thank you!

People magazine highlights the stay-slim secrets of the stars in an online pictorial that features Hilary Duff, among others. The shrunken singer-actress says she cut out junk food in lieu of eating healthier, smaller meals. Online chat rooms abound with talk about the 17-year-old's gangly gams, but Duff insists she's nothing but average in Tinseltown. "I like to look normal," she says.

While Lindsay Lohan tries to form a friendship with Hilary Duff, we have some newsies on their upcoming film together, Bad Girls.

MTV is still lagging in its search for a director while Nip/Tuck's Sean McNamara is a no-go. But on to more interesting news.

Producers are still rolling ahead with negotiations with the girls, despite what their reps might tell you. Hilary's camp is in a huff over mentions of drugs and abortion in Alex McAuley's book that the film is based on, which means MTV is busy stripping the script of any references.

Meanwhile, Lindsay might sign on with a significantly lower figure than her $7 million asking price, meaning we might be forced to sit through a Stuff by Hilary Duff licensing deal rip off while she makes up for lost cash.

Pop star Hilary Duff is a regular visitor to the injured US soldiers recuperating at Washington DC's National Naval Medical Center because she loves to hear their war stories.

The So yesterday singer, 17, fears that many of those she visits have no interest in her or her music career, but that won't keep her away.

Lindsay Lohan claims that she tried to end the infamous feud between her and Hilary Duff, but, she says, she got hung up on when she called.

“I called her last week, and I was like, ‘Do you wanna hang out?’ And her sister hung up the phone on me!” Lohan told the magazine Australian. “I don’t like having enemies ... and there’s the saying, keep your friends close but your enemies closer.”

The feud supposedly started when Lohan learns that Duff is dating her ex-sweetie, singer Aaron Carter. “It was like, literally, four years ago when that happened, we were 14, 15, we liked a boy, it was like a crush," Lohan says. "Eurgh, it was so stupid! And I was like, ‘We have a lot of similar friends in LA, let’s just be cool, so if we see each other everything’s fine.’ I don’t wanna have fights with people.”

Hilary Duff's latest offering, a collection of hit tracks and new cuts appropriately dubbed Most Wanted, maintained its hold over the Billboard albums chart despite moving only half as many copies as it had the previous week.
Scans of just over 101,000 were all Duff needed to keep the top spot, as Most Wanted spends a second straight week on top, according to the latest SoundScan totals. Duff's disc outsold the 19th chapter in the Now That's What I Call Music! series — featuring the likes of Gwen Stefani, Ludacris, the Killers, Shakira and Coldplay — by just over 5,000 copies.

Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi sits tight at the chart's #3 slot with sales of close to 89,000, followed by the Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business, up two spots to #4 with 85,000 copies leaving record-store shelves.

It wasn't an especially arresting week for debuts, with the highest-charting new entry, Harlem: Diary of a Summer from Diplomats' Jim Jones, opening as Billboard's #5 disc with sales of more than 74,000. British novelty act Crazy Frog's Crazy Hits was Jones' closest competitor in the debuts category, and takes the chart's #19 slot with scans of 40,000 and change; the album's single, "Axel F," started out as a ringtone and eventually blossomed into one of Europe's fastest moneymakers. Time will tell if the craze will sink or swim after crossing the pond.

Something Corporate frontman Andrew McMahon's side project, Jack's Mannequin, opens at #37, with sales for that band's debut, Everything in Transit, coming in at just over 22,000. The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema takes the chart's #44 with more than 19,000 scans. Fear Factory's latest, Transgression, comes in at #45 with sales of close to 19,000. Death Row's Kurupt finds himself at #60, with nearly 16,000 copies of his latest, Against Tha Grain, leaving stores. Every Time I Die's Gutter Phenomenon is in at #71, with more than 14,000 in debut-week sales. The Bled's Found in the Flood follows at #87, selling more than 12,000, while Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Howl finishes at #90 with just under 12,000 scans. All Star Smash Hits, a retrospective release from Smash Mouth, comes in at #96 with 11,000 plus copies sold.

Brad Paisley, who spent the previous week on Duff's heels, slips four spots to #6 with his Time Well Wasted. Young Jeezy's Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 climbs three spots to #7 with more than 61,000 copies of the disc sold. Demon Days, the latest from animated rock troupe and MTV Video Music Award winners the Gorillaz, checks in at #8 with sales just shy of the 52,000 mark, followed by fellow Moonman owner Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway, which became a million seller three times over with nearly 51,000 scans recorded this time out. VMA dominating punkers Green Day round out the top 10 with American Idiot, which inches its way up three spots with week-49 sales of nearly 51,000.

Staind's Chapter V drops five spots to #12, close behind Faith Hill's 11th place finishing Fireflies, while Coldplay's X&Y clings to the top 15, taking the chart's #13 with over 47,000 scans. Fall Out Boy's From Under the Cork Tree jumps three spots to #14 with 45,000 plus scans. And Gwen Stefani's Love, Angel, Music, Baby is in at #15 with more than 44,000 copies sold.

It ROX give it as a gift, buy another copy just do whatever to support her!!! We're gonna make her #1 again!!!

Hilary Duff has vowed to use her celebrity to publicise good causes because she wants others to feel the thrill of helping others. The singer and actress has been heavily influenced by her mother's tireless charity work and insists there is nothing more important than sharing good fortune with those in need.

And she is particularly moved by the plight of starving and poorly children. She says, "It's something that I feel strongly about. My mom and I butt heads once in a while, just because we're mother and daughter, you know, but she is a person that I totally admire and look up to.

"Ever since I can remember, she would have dinner parties during Christmas time and instead of people bringing presents, she would be like, 'Bring formula, bring diapers (to be donated to the needy).' "She has always had a very hands-on attitude about giving back and helping. So when I got a voice and people knew who I was, I thought it was a really important way to get people to (do the same).

"You don't have to be famous to help. Kids in hospitals don't only want to see famous people; they just want to have people play with them, reach out and touch them. "We get so caught up in a very selfish world. I'm not trying to sound like a saint, but we take for granted that we are healthy and able to live a certain way. Giving back makes you feel like a good person inside."

Hilary Duff has just released her new album Most Wanted, a compilation of past hits plus several new songs. “Music is so personal to me. I can be myself, and say what I want to say,” Duff said. “I feel I’m honest and don’t try to hide things. Music enables people to learn about my personality, how I’m evolving. Even if I don’t feel comfortable talking about something, I can feel comfortable expressing that same thing through my music.”

Duff’s 36-date Most Wanted tour in 2004, which featured her sister Haylie as an opening act, sold out in major cities around the U.S. Most Wanted contains well-known songs like So Yesterday, Girl Can Rock and Our Lips Are Sealed.

Hilary Duff has hit out at fellow young pop stars who behave in a raunchy fashion in a desperate bid to ditch their nubile images. The principled singer has slammed the actions of former teen stars, including Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears, as immature, and warns they will regret their antics in years to come.

Duff, 17, muses, "It's so funny, because with Jessica Simpson... a lot of people talked bad about Britney Spears and gave her so much flak, and I don't see any difference. "I think if you feel comfortable with what you're doing, more power to you, that's what you should be doing.

"But I definitely do not think taking your clothes off or going out and getting wasted every night is a sign of maturity. "I do not want to look back years from now and go, 'Ugh, that's so embarrassing."

The October premiere issue drops on newsstands Aug. 28 with a $4.99 cover price and a 50,000 bimonthly distribution to primarily western U.S. states.

Gatsby president/CEO John Ryan says Hollywood Dog will cover doggie style, products and health in a similar format as its 75,000-circ New York sibling, but with a California sensibility. Ryan says the Hollywood edition will more likely cover larger breeds and have fewer cold weather doggie products, like sweaters and parkas. Jane Magazine Article (Hil's on the cover for Sept.)

We're in the parking lot of an amphitheater in Denver and the soon-to-be-18 Hilary Duff has just surprised everyone at our photo shoot by singing along and dancing to the Smiths and the Jesus and Mary Chain, as opposed to spending all her time on a stupid sidekick. Much like she recently floored New York scenesters during underground DJ stint where she played everything from Jay-Z to the killers to AFI. Hmm, what else is going on here?

So the latest news on the internet is that your smile looks different. Is it veneers?
Yeah, on my two front teeth. I was really sick as a kid and constantly on antibiotics, so my teeth aren't the strongest, and I kept chipping them on the microphone. One show, I literally spit half of my two front teeth out. I was in some small town in the Northeast, at, like, the only dentist. It was 6 o'clock in the morning, and I had a whole day of work planned. So they bonded my teeth. Then there was a crowd waiting for me outside. I was so embarrassed.

Suppose someone ratted?
felt like that, but it's not the kids' fault. Anyway, when I got to L.A., I got veneers.
But it's like, why is it people's business?

Chipping your teeth on the microphone-that's more punk-rock than your friend Joel Madden of Good Charlotte.
[laughs] I guess it's cool that I was rocking out that hard. I don't spit on people, though. He fills his mouth with water [and spits on the audience]. It's so gross. I would never do that.

Is it fair to call Joel your boyfriend?
You could say that. Yeah.

Is the fact that he's 26-nine years older-a big deal?
I think that's why people want to talk about it. For a while I questioned it a little bit. But I feel like we're a good match. We did three songs together for my new album Most Wanted, which was fun. Whether people think it's okay or not, I'm happy. I couldn't date anybody my age. I don't go to regular school, how am I going to meet someone my age? I'm not a normal 17-year old girl, as much as I like to say I am. It's hard. Sometimes I work 20-hour days.

Is young Hollywood's skinny phase a big trend or media hype?
The only thing I see wrong is that girls growing up in middle America might say, "I need to look like that, too." That's not what normal girls look like. I'm comfortable with the way I look.

Do you think celebrity coverage dominates too much of the news? Like, should we be thinking about Iraq instead of laughing at the fashion police?
It's rediculous, all these "funny" comments about what people wear. It crushes people's self-creativity-how they want to be seen, what they like to wear, whatever. You see the comments, then on the side, the tiny pictures of the comedians who make them. And they're like the voice of Spongebob Squarepants's neighbor who lives 10 blocks down. It's just mean.

What's been your most embarrassing red carpet moment?
Something I don't really want to talk about. It's so gossipy' I got shoved on the red carpet once.

By a fellow actor?
No, not an actor or actress. [pauses] well, I don't know, maybe they try to be now.

A musician?
They're trying now.

Is it Paris Hilton?
laughs] I'm not naming names. I think they were just walking by, didn't like me and pushed me. I didn't say anything. I just told my sister, Haylie. We have the same attitude-we think it's all funny. We'll be on the red carpet smiling, but saying things between our teeth like, "Oh my gosh, how weird is this?"

Do you and Haylie counsel each other on your careers?
Filming Material Girls was fun because we got to give each other advice. She'd be like, 'Hilary, give a little more energy.' But when we're not working together, we don't ever talk about it because we get so little time together anyway.

Do you guys have any passwords for things?
We have a couple. Words that mean a totally different word.

Tell me one.
Like when we're walking through the airport, someone on my team might be like, 'You've got mail.' And that means people are about to bum-rush us.

You're about to turn 18. Have you considered what that means?
don't know if much is going to change. My mom and dad have given me a lot of freedom. I get to make decisions about my life and my career. I just want to be able to vote.

Who would you have voted for in the last presidential election?
That's such a personal question. I think no matter what party you're for, you should support the president in office.

Do you support any environmental or political causes?
work with the Armed Forces Foundation. It raises money for families that have a parent serving overseas, giving supplies, clothing, toys. In every city I play, I give concert tickets to military families. When I'm in Washington [D.C.], I go to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda [Md.] for injured soldiers. Their stories are incredible.

Is it scary? Are there guys with limbs missing?
I mean, every limb missing. And who knows if they even care about me, but I think it's that I come that's important. When there are people who are 19 years old, putting their life on the line fighting for our freedom every single day, you should support them. Show tham that respect.

When you walk into a store and see the Hilary Duff name on things, does that register with you?
I never think about it until someone mentions it to me. Apart from snarky comments people make, I feel lucky I have had such a big part in all of it. My clothing line now isn't necessarily clothes I would wear. It is marketed for a younger audience. But it's funny, sometimes I'll see a 20 year old boy wearing a Hilary Duff hot-pink shirt. That's awesome

Is it weird bossing around people 20 years older than you?
It's really hard for me to be the boss. I don't sit around and say, "I want this done. Now go do that!" Sometimes I get a little attitude from people we don't work with on a day-to-day basis. They feel like, "Oh, she's just a little girl."

Who are some designers you love?
I love Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs. I love Japanese fashion.

Are you famous in Japan?
I hate that word.

What skeeves you out about it?
When you think of someone who's famous, you think of Britney Spears, not me. We never really use that word in my household.

What do you use? Well-known? Popular?
Maybe popular. It's funny, Haylie and I talk about 'tom cruise' or 'britney spears.' They have famous-people names, but I guess that's because they are famous. I think, 'oh gosh, my name's the worst name.' I don't have a good name.

Hil’s got faith - and Joel respects that!

You’re 30,000 feet in the air on a cross-country flight. All of a sudden, your plane is shaken by extremely scary turbulence. What would you do? Well, if you were Hilary, the answer is simple. You would start praying to your guardian angel, of course! “I pray all the time on flights,” says Hil. “The second turbulence starts going, I’m like, ‘Angel! Please help me get through this flight!

Help From Above
Relying on faith to get through tough times is nothing new to Hil. Spiritual from a young age, her beliefs have shaped her life. In fact, Hilary’s faith actually helps her make difficult decisions in life - and in her career. Asked recently why she chose to take on the role of Terri in her hit movie “Raise Your Voice,” Hil explained, “I liked that the character was such a believer in faith; she was very spirtual,” In addition to using her belief in the divine to help choose her roles, Hilary also looks to the heavens for strength when dealing with stage fright. Before every concert, Hil asks for a blessing for her and her crew.

Heavenly Love
So what does Hil’s boyfriend, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden, think of her faith? Even though the punk rocker isn’t as open about his spiritual side, he says he believes in higher power. “I don’t care what people think of me because the only person I answer to is God,” says Joel. In fact, his strong values totally intrigued Hilary! “Compared to any young actor, Joel is normal. He’s not a partier. He’s not a crazy rock star,” says Hil.

Real-life Angel
Hil’s charmed life may be a result of hard work, tons of natural talent and maybe a little bit of luck. But this spiritual celeb knows she’d be nowhere without her super-strong faith and a little help from her own personal guardian angel!

With a new CD out this week and stunning successes in movies and fashion, the teen queen, 17, makes it clear she's not about to disappear.
Believe it or not, Hilary Duff has been in the collective pop cultural consciousness for only about three years -- ever since she released her debut album, Metamorphosis.

In that short time, the 17-year-old has catapulted from Lizzie McGuire in kiddie-TV land, a venture that ended in 2003, to Hilary Duff: Teen Empire. With her hands in everything from fashion design (Stuff by Hilary Duff), to film (A Cinderella Story, The Perfect Man, Cheaper by the Dozen) to the oversaturated world of teen queen pop music, Duff has squeezed an entire celebrity career into an abbreviated few years.

And now, to cap off her recent pop culture takeover, she's releasing a nostalgic new CD this week -- a greatest hits package -- and only her third album, opportunely titled Most Wanted.

In a telephone interview with Sun Media, Duff talks about the new album, her love affair with Canada, the Hollywood lifestyle and, of course, Lindsay Lohan.

Here's an abridged version of the interview:

Q : I gather you spend a lot of time in Toronto?

A : Yeah, I do. I feel like it's my second home. I'm always there. I love it . . . I know the city really well and I have a couple of friends there and it's really nice. The shopping's great.

Q : The new CD is a greatest hits album?

It's not really a greatest hits; it's more of a collection of my favourite songs . . . A lot of the songs have been remixed and remastered so they sound totally different and there are three new songs on the album that have a new sound that I wanted to experiment with.

Q : Why do an album like this, rather than a new album?

I guess because the album gives people a taste of what the music is going to be like at the show. I'm touring all summer and, you know, the new songs are totally different . . . so I just thought it was cool, you know? Just so I can get a grasp on what I want my new sound to be like and to prepare (for) when I work on my full album. This is just something fun now that will promote the tour and sounds a little different.

Q : What is this new sound?

It's nothing in particular. The three songs we did (with) Benji and (current boyfriend) Joel (Madden) from Good Charlotte . . . obviously Wake Up (has a) very pop, dancy, kind of '80s vibe to it and we did another song called Beat of My Heart that sounds kind of techno. And we did a song called Break My Heart that's more pop-punk-rock-sounding . . . It's just all different and each song has a totally different vibe to it.

Q : How did you pick the songs (for the new album)?

I picked my favourites.

Q : Do you think it's premature to release a compilation album as your third album?

No. I don't think I would do it if I did.

Q : I notice you're releasing a collector's edition as well. . . . Do you get fan mail asking for an album like this?

Well, I don't get to read all my fan mail. There's a lot of it. But people have asked about it. I mean, we had to get the idea from somewhere, right?

Q : The opening lyrics for (the first single) Wake Up are "People talking . . . but they don't really know anything about me," and "I know I've made mistakes" -- it seems very personal.

It is. I wrote Wake Up, Beat of My Heart and Break My Heart -- well, Benji and Joel wrote them and then I went into the studio and changed a bunch of lyrics with them. At first, Joel brought me the songs and it was really great . . . but it was too much about press and people talking, you know? Almost, like, my career, and the song is not about that at all. There are some people out there who sing like that -- about the business and about how it's so controlling over them and whatever. That's not what this song is . . . It's not me, Hilary, that everyone knows. It's me as a normal person, as a normal girl growing up, doing things. . . . It's not about press or it's not about being in the public eye.

Q : So, you're talking about the people who actually know you on a regular level, rather than the press -- is that what you mean?

No, I'm just saying that's where the song comes from. It's that message. It's not a message about my work -- it's just a song.

Q : So, it's not specific to you, then, these lyrics?

No, I don't think we're understanding each other. It is specific to me and my personal life. It's Hilary the normal girl that my friends know. It's not the Hilary that the public sees. That's not what it's about -- the speculations or whatever. And normal people deal with that too, you know? I'm not talking about one person in particular, just what the world is, and especially with girls -- they're very petty and it's hard when everyone should just be each others' friends. That's what the song's about. I mean, I have a couple of great girlfriends, but so many of my friends are guys and I think girls get jealous of each other really easily. Some of my friends that go to high school, it is so crazy the stories that they tell me, the fights they get into.

Q : Do you experience a version of that among other celebrities?

Well, I think people have read about it for three years that I have. But honestly, I don't know what any of that is about. I don't know these people. I totally am not Hollywood. I don't live a Hollywood lifestyle where I go out and party every night and hang out with this person (or) put my arm around that person to get my picture here. I don't get that group of friends. I don't know how they could really care about each other and be friends, you know? My lifestyle is so separate from that.

Q : Really?

Totally. I mean, I might go out to a club one night with my friends, but there's a front door and a back door -- a door that you get seen at and a door that you don't. I don't even know the people who have talked bad about me or that I've supposedly said stuff about. And millions and millions of people read about it and know about it and I'm, like, "I didn't even know that." It's really hard to deal with.

Q : How do you deal with it?

I don't think there's a way to prepare yourself for it . . . (You) just hope that it goes away.

Q : And has it?

I think it's died down a little bit. She's started a couple more feuds with someone else, so I guess I'm old news now to her.

Q : By "she," you're referring to Lindsay Lohan, I assume?

Yeah, to Lindsay.

Q : And you don't know her? You don't know each other?

No. I mean, we have two totally separate groups of friends. The thing is, I think there's so many young people out there and really talented ones and I think she's really talented, you know? And there's so much work for everybody . . . I just don't know the reasoning behind people talking bad about each other. It's so not necessary.

Q : I notice you work a lot now with your sister Haylie. What have you done to prepare her for that?

I don't think I have to. She's so smart and she's someone I really talk to a lot when I read something about myself that isn't true or something that I didn't want people to know. She's my best friend.

Q : You and your sister sort of have this Olsen Twins thing happening now with this empire of movies and music and a clothing line. Do you see the similarities at all?

My sister and I don't do a clothing line together -- it's just mine. And singing-wise, we've done one song together and sometimes we write music together, but that's just because besides me writing with Benji and Joel, I won't write with anyone but her. We did one song together for a soundtrack, then we did a movie together called Material Girls and we're going to do one more song -- a remake of Madonna's Material Girl for that.

Q : I read in your online diary that you're taking some classes at Harvard? What type of degree are you working toward?

I don't think right now I'm really focused on working toward a degree or even graduating. I did a semester with Harvard and their online programs and it was fun. I just wanted to learn something outside of the business.

Q : Any plans for a Canadian tour?

We haven't planned on any shows in Canada yet, but (the last Canadian) tour was so incredible. I didn't know that I had so many fans there. Every single show in the tiniest towns was sold out and it was so cold everywhere we went. . . . So I definitely want to go back.

Don't expect Hilary Duff to play light teen roles forever — as her 18th birthday approaches, the singer hopes to dig in to meatier roles that would let her stretch her acting muscles. She says she's been holding onto a script for the past year that she'd love to see made into a movie, "but who knows if it's ever going to happen." The character she would play is "so cool and weird and messed up. It's not like she's a druggie, she's just different, she's just in her head, she's crazy," Duff said. "I think it would be good for girls to see that." She thinks the project will have to wait at least another year because it's not what people expect of her, and she thinks she needs to "ease into" roles like that. "This is a business, and you have to give people what they want to see," she said. "It's the smartest thing."

Hilary Duff has been working up a sweat on her U.S. summer tour and it shows in her svelte physique. But that's not the only reason she's looking so trim. "I've made myself be really good for the last couple of months," she says of her healthier diet. "I used to be obsessed with French fries. Like I'm the biggest French fry person in the world. I could eat French fries all day."

Duff hasn't only changed what she eats – she's also altered how she eats. "I've been eating a little bit all throughout the day and I saw such a big difference so fast! Now I'm like, 'Yes, this is awesome!' And I'm still full all the time." But Duff says she'll never become a waif. "I think it's feminine to not be so skinny. I like to look normal and I think it's also important for girls who look up to me to see that."

Do you know who's the top TV earner? Who's logged the most hours on camera? Or even which actor has made the most public appearances in a 12-hour span? Guinness World Records 2006 hits stores today to answer all those trivia questions and some you'd never even think to ask!

In the TV category, top earners include usual suspects like OPRAH WINFREY, who is the top Talk Show Host, earning $210 million in 2003; teen queen HILARY DUFF, who made a whopping $8 million in 2003 and is the book's top earning Child Actress; and KATIE COURIC, who made $13 million, making her the top TV News Broadcaster.

Not only are TV stars making the big money, but the advertisers are as well. The Most Expensive TV Advertisement is the four-minute, BAZ LUHRMANN directed, CHANEL No. 5 commercial starring NICOLE KIDMAN, costing a cool $33 million. The Oscar-winning actress also earned a spot on the Guinness roster by making $3.71 million for the ad, the Highest Fee Per Minute By An Actor for a TV commercial at $928,800 a minute!

Also breaking records this year is the now-household name KEN JENNINGS, the "Jeopardy!" champ who took home $2,520,700 after defeating 149 opponents and answering over 2,000 questions correctly.

WILL SMITH holds the Record For The Most Public Appearances in 12 Hours By A Movie Star. He walked the red carpet, signed autographs and introduced the movie 'Hitch' at theaters in three cities in England this past February.

The Most Hours On Camera record goes to daytime talker REGIS PHILBIN, who has logged a whopping 15,188 hours on camera, which averages out to almost an hour a day for every year of his 46-year career.

In the movie world, CAMERON DIAZ and MEL GIBSON are holding strong as they keep their records for the Highest Annual Earnings by a Movie Actress and Actor, respectively. The 'Charlie's Angels' star made $33 million in 2003, and the 'Passion of the Christ' director took in $210 million in 2003.

It's not just movie and TV stars making the list. Rocker GWEN STEFANI's "Hollaback Girl" recorded sales of 58,500 in May of this year, making it the Biggest Selling Download Single in a Week in the U.S.

The book features thousands of new records as well as interviews with celebrity record holders like OutKast and skateboarder TONY HAWK.

Britney's done it. Lindsay's done it. Heck, even Ashlee's done it — and on late-night television, to boot. But that doesn't mean Hilary Duff is going to ... lip-synch, that is. Not that there's anything wrong with it, she said.

"I don't think that I 100 percent disagree with lip-synching," Duff said. "When you're Britney Spears and you're dancing a perfect choreographed show and you're changing outfits nine times, then it becomes not so much about the music. Her music is so fun, you know what I mean? You dance and it's club music and it's high energy, and she's out of breath and dancing and running around. But it's about a performance, and that's fine. That's a choice you make."

Duff's current Still Most Wanted Tour isn't as highly choreographed, though she does run around a bit and get out of breath. "I try as best I can to sing," she said. "It's about the music."

Plus, she loves the risk factor — the possibility that she might flub a line or two. That's what makes a live show special, that it's not going to be just like it was in the studio, that there aren't producers on standby to correct your pitch or feed you the lyrics.

"If you miss a couple of notes, who cares?" Duff said. "A normal person, if you write a paper, you're not going to spell all the words right. You're not going to hit all the notes. I think it's cool to mess up or be out of breath or not finish your whole verse. It's real."

Duff's Still Most Wanted Tour continues Friday (August 12) in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and runs until September 25 in Puyallup, Washington. Her Most Wanted album hits stores Tuesday

Rapper Lil' Jon is going mainstream, recording collaborations with pop sweethearts Jessica Simpson and Hilary Duff.

The hip-hopper has remixed Simpson's single These Boots Are Made For Walking for her next album and is working on a track for Duff's new movie soundtrack.

He explains, "I was doing a remix of Boots and when I did the beat, I was like, 'This beat's too hot for a remix,' so I sent it to them and they liked it, and they're gonna use it for her album.

"And Hilary Duff, we were doing something for her soundtrack for her Material Girl movie and that's kinda hot too."

Maybe it's just a radioactive side effect from the green glow sticks, but I think Hilary Duff is better than Ashlee Simpson.

Way better.

She's better than that conniving Lindsay Lohan, too.

Wait a minute, that has to be the glow sticks talking.

Duff -- the button-cute, former Lizzie McGuire, family-friendly-next-Britney wannabe -- rewarded the screaming devotion of a nearly packed house at the cozy Silver Spurs Arena on Wednesday with an upbeat show without bare midriffs or very many special effects.

For the target audience, which was just about tall enough to ride Space Mountain, it was sheer delirium. For the rest of us, the best escape was to stare deep into one of the hundreds of souvenir glow sticks and channel the (pre-)teen spirit:

(Start dream sequence now.)

Isn't that opening singer Tyler Hilton dreamy? It doesn't even matter that the microphone sounds so garbled that you can't even hear the verses. I mean, like, the chorus is the most important part anyway.

Didn't you just love it when he pretended to be all into the blues in the middle of that one pop song? You know, the one that sort of sounded like all the others? Anyway, it was really cool the way he leaned his head back and made that pained expression. It looked like something terrible had happened, like that time I got grounded for making a C in math.

I liked the way that he and the other opening act, Teddy Geiger, only played about 20 minutes each. It was really boring, you know, because they weren't Hilary and everything.

After the opening acts, we waited 25 minutes for Hilary. That was plenty of time to buy souvenirs and watch them repeat her TV commercials on the big video screens before the final countdown.

I counted down the final 10 seconds just like a space mission, and then Hilary was there!

She was singing "Wake Up," the same song on one of the commercials, and the stage was really pretty: Two big towers on each side, green laser spotlights and a giant neon screen in back.

Hilary wasn't wearing some sexy outfit, just a pair of black jeans and a sporty red-and-white top. She didn't change her outfit all night and she sure is thin.

Some of the people in the really choice seats up front were acting crazy -- and not just the kids. One girl's mom started arguing with the usher when he asked her not to stand on her chair, but I guess that's what happens when the music is so awesome.

There was a real band on stage, and you could hear it pretty well, except for the three back-up singers. I only noticed them when they were dancing.

It was hard to hear Hilary's tiny little voice when she was singing the quiet parts, like in "Underneath This Smile." Then it always sounded strong when the whole band was playing.

Weird, huh?

Anyway, she played for about an hour, so there wasn't enough time to be bored. Then, she came back and did a few more songs because we screamed so much.

Some of the adults were just staring at their glow sticks.

You might remember that I posted that Joel had been asked about Hilary's teeth on Much Music. And you may have read what Joel had to say about that in his blog entry, which was also posted here. Hannah Sung of MuchMusic commented on Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden's critique of her question about Hilary Duff's newly enlarged and whitened teeth.

Now, this is what Hannah Sung writes about it in her "blog":

"Blogs are how nerds get the last word. Always.... But apparently, Joel Madden of Good Charlotte is one of us. A nerdy yelping voice on the littered landscape of the world wide web. Yes, he's a celebrity, but dude blogs like crazy. And in regards to a recent tete-a-tete avec moi, he definitely got the last word in (until now!).

Last weekend I took it upon myself to ask Joel about Hilary Duff's teeth. Don't pretend you haven't been talking about them (by them, I mean the teeth – whether or not Joel and Hilary are a couple is so last season – of course they are!). Anybody who stares at a monitor for long enough to read my ramblings has witnessed how the internet has become alight with queries about Hilary's new look. People want to know. I ask questions. So I actually, uh... asked Joel about Hilary's teeth. I know. It's weird.

Joel also thought it was "weird". And "dumb". He said so in his blog. When the Much interactive folks tipped me off to Joel's critique of my line of questioning, they did it gingerly. Like my feelings might be hurt. Truth be told, I am really sensitive. I like to be able to hold my head up high after an interview and if anybody, interviewer or interviewee, walks away feeling badly then I don't know how good of an experience it could have been for either of us. So when Joel lambasted me in his blog (although I remained nameless), my friends tried to break the news by sugar-coating it.

Well, you know what? Reading his blog made me realize that I have more in common with Joel of Good Charlotte than I ever could have realized.

I think celebrity is weird. I think talking about Hilary's veneers like it's a news story, is weird. But that's the world I operate in and even though I sometimes feel like I'm performing espionage on celebrity culture (as an aspiring journalist, espionage is just a glam way of saying objectivity), the truth is, I step into the bubble and then step back out. I'm standing there with multi-platinum rock stars Good Charlotte on television for a moment before I step back out to my real world. And while I straddle the line, I make compromises.

I'd love to spend all 20 precious minutes with Good Charlotte by having a conversation about inspiration, motivations, and what's in our hearts and minds. And I try to get a good chunk of that in for every interview that I do. That's the substantial, fascinating territory for any artist and human being.

But my world also needs to align with the soundbites, images and edits. As a producer, I understand that. Asking the more gossipy, clip-friendly questions that yield the sparkly answers that fuels music television programming is what I do so that I can spend the other half of my interview time asking the questions that I can personally be proud of.

So I asked about Hilary's teeth. I'll be honest – I felt weird. But it didn't come out of nowhere. Joel and I had already talked about his relationship with Hilary and how refreshing it is to be open and honest with the press that hounds. We'd also covered his love of internet gossip sites. With the conversation going in this direction, I really felt like talking about Hilary's teeth wasn't overly tacky. Just a little bit tacky. Like awards shows.

I have to say that after reading Joel's blog about me (inexplicably, the post has since been taken down), I have a newfound respect for him. I still have my own reasons for doing things. And we each have our own perspective, as one person wants promotion and the other wants answers - we aren't always going to meet eye to eye. But Joel did say that I'm his favourite VJ. Well, Joel – you're my favourite critic."

"I think that you can still be cool and not have coke in your nose, you know?" 17-year-old singer, actress accepts her "goody good" label with pride.

It's easy to be fooled by her age. (She's 17, at least until the end of September.) Or by her clean-cut image. (She doesn't dress provocatively, or dip her eyelashes at you in come-hither fashion.)

Or by her casual conversation. (It's rife with all the "you knows" and "likes" that you'd expect to hear at, you know, like, a pajama party.)

But Hilary Duff is no little girl.

The actress and singer -- who performs a concert next Sunday at the Columbus Civic Center -- is thick-skinned, intelligent and hard to catch off guard. Beneath the pop sheen of her music lurks a rock 'n' roller, she says, and she plans to prove it on a future record. You get the feeling that she's crafted her squeaky-clean image to make a statement.

"I think that you can still be cool and not have coke in your nose, you know? As blatant as that sounds," Duff said during a recent telephone interview.

So among the crop of young entertainers, among peers like Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Duff is billed as the "wholesome" one.

"I hear 'goody good' all the time. I'd rather be that than be called anything else," she said. The label might not be a perfect fit, but for her, it's better than the alternative.

"I think it's really cheesy when people just put their body out there or are this sexual-type icon," she said. "I mean, what's their focus? What's their intentions for their talent, you know?

"I think I'm a pretty positive role model, and someone who isn't too scandalous and stays out of the focus of that kind of thing -- the partying and stuff like that. I don't want girls to think... that it's normal for people to live like that, 'cause it's not, you know?"

Not that Duff should be the poster child for "normal."

Growing up, she was "like, a dirty little tomboy," from San Antonio, Texas. Then she was cast as the plucky title character in the Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire," at age 13. It became the channel's highest-ranked show within a year, and by 2003 she had invaded the big screen with a role in "Agent Cody Banks."

More significant was her next film, 2003's "The Lizzy McGuire Movie." Not only did she step up to a lead role, but the film's soundtrack featured Duff singing two hit singles, paving the way for her full-length debut, "Metamorphosis."

The album went platinum in two months and has sold more than 3 million copies to date. The 2004 follow-up, "Hilary Duff," achieved platinum in just one month.

Duff launched her new tour two weeks ago in Los Angeles, filling the arena with vibrant strobes and a fiber-optic blanket of lights.

Rolling Stone posted a glowing review online, calling her a "savvy performer" and praising her energy. ("That's a rare thing," Duff said when told of the review. "Rolling Stone hasn't really shown too much love to me. But that's nice that they liked my show.")

The tour supports a best-of record due out Aug. 16, and she's taken a bit of a drubbing for releasing a hits package as only her third proper album, although it does contain three new tracks.

"It's not really like a greatest hits. It's a collection. Some of my favorite songs and stuff," she said. "I guess this is just to let people hear what the music's going to be like for the show and, you know, get a taste of the new music."

She's used to getting beaten a bit by the press, anyway, who sometimes dismiss her music as trifle or art by committee.

"It's kind of funny when you read some, like, old washed-up, 60-year-old someone," she said. "That's not my demographic. What are you doing reviewing my stuff? You're not going to relate to any of this, so why review it?"

On stage is where she gets to exert her authority, and if more critics saw the show, they might view her work more kindly.

"I love the music, and when I'm on tour the music gets to sound exactly how I want it," she said. "So we get to make it sound as hard or as rock 'n' roll as we want."

She's seen fans in the crowd who are 4 years old, 12 years old, 17 years old, and "a group of like 20-year-old guys that are wearing Slipknot T-shirts" she said. "I go, 'Whoah.' I think they're going to beat me up or something, but they know like every single lyric to my songs."

So expect a little more raw energy from her Civic Center show on Aug. 7.

Meanwhile, she finds herself fending off record label personnel who are constantly hungry for new music from her. Two albums in 13 months is an almost unheard-of pace for modern artists.

Bad for the artist

"They really didn't release as many singles as I would like, and it gets hard to fight for why they should do it when they've already made their money back," Duff said. "I put out one single and sold a million and a half records, so they already made their money back."

And, for the first time in the conversation, she sounded frustrated.

"It's really hard," she said. "Nothing ever looks bad on anybody else. Nothing ever looks bad on the studio. Nothing ever looks bad on a label. It looks bad on the artist, because that's the face that you see. So that's the part that gets a little degrading or wears on you a little bit."

Too much

It's been a tough run for Duff's peers recently.

• Mary-Kate Olsen checks into a clinic to battle anorexia.

• Lindsay Lohan is diagnosed with extreme exhaustion.

This just a few years after diva Mariah Carey checks out, also citing extreme exhaustion after putting together a stinker of a movie ("Glitter") and companion record.

So could TV/movie/pop music star Duff be biting off more than she can chew, too?

"I think I'm pretty exhausted, but I haven't collapsed for some reason," she said. "I am doing too much. If it's not working on a film or finishing it by doing (voice tracks), or doing a three-day press junket with 75 five-minute interviews all day long, or, you know, going and doing the rounds of TV shows. In between that I'm having meetings, and doing approvals for my clothing line, or going in the studio to try and finish a song, or putting an album together. Or, you know, promote a tour, or going on tour, or rehearsing for a tour, or filming a movie."

Or fielding calls about the nature of her relationship with longtime pal Joel Madden, lead singer for Good Charlotte.

Yes, they're dating, OK? She's finally admitted it. Now leave her alone about it.

"I just feel like, you see so many people out there that, like, you know, jump on couches or do stuff like that. And that's not what the job is about," she said. "I didn't get into this business to show who I'm dating or who I'm not. I guess the more you let people know about it, the more they want to know about it, so the more invasive stuff gets.

"I don't know. I really am happy, and that's what matters. But I don't like to talk about it too much."

That's OK. It sounds like she needs a rest anyway.

In fact, she's hoping for some time off soon. But first she's got to wrap up the concert tour. And a couple more films -- including "Material Girls," with sister Haylie and a sequel to "Cheaper by the Dozen" with Steve Martin. And she's anxious to get back in the studio to sink her teeth into a harder rocking record.

There's like, you know, lots to do.

Teen pop star Hilary Duff spent Wednesday night working a near sell-out crowd at the Richmond Coliseum, but on Tuesday she did what any other teenage girl likes to do on her day off . . . shop.

Best known for her role on the Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire" and Top 40 hits like "Come Clean" and "Fly," Duff hit up Henrico County's Short Pump Town Center for a little shopping spree.

"The rumor is apparently she and her mother shopped at Abercrombie & Fitch, Schwarzschild Jewelers, Godiva and Guess," said Misty Parsons, director of marketing for Short Pump Town Center.

Duff also stopped at bath and beauty boutique Soak!, whose products have been featured in A-list celebrity gift baskets at the Oscars and for the likes of P. Diddy and Jessica Simpson.

"We get celebrities from time to time, but it had been awhile," said Eli York, Soak!'s national sales manager. "We really like it when they actually come in."

She said Duff spent about 30 minutes trying on make-up and testing products before deciding to purchase the store's Vanilla Chai soy candle and Fresh Market's coconut-banana body soap.

Duff's Web site features "Christina's Road Report," an update written by a friend who accompanies the singer on tour. Tuesday's report from Richmond said "Hil wanted to go shopping so we went to the Guess store and Hilary bought these really cute pair of flowy pants."

A Guess employee confirmed that Duff visited the store around 1 p.m. on Tuesday and purchased the pants in green for $69. One fan who read the report on the Web site has already come in the store requesting to try on the same pants Duff bought, the employee said.

The store now has Duff's receipt, along with her autograph, on display.

"It's a big deal for us just because people know that she was here shopping," the Guess employee said. "It's cool to say she shopped here."

Parsons said no one associated with Duff contacted Short Pump Town Center in advance to request any special treatment for her visit.

"We didn't get a call, so she just must have popped in," she said.

Every now and then, Parsons said she does receive a call from VIPs or government officials prepping the mall for their arrival. In the spring, the Secret Service said they would be at the shopping center but didn't say who they were accompanying.

"We never could figure out who was here," Parsons said.

Duff was so impressed with Metro Richmond's shopping scene that she even gave it a shout-out during Wednesday night's performance, according to Geoff Parish, who attended the show. "During that little bit where she greeted Richmond, she commented how she really liked it here and said 'Richmond has great malls!'"

Hilary Duff is growing up. She's not the loveable, clutzy Lizzy McGuire any more. Instead she's turning into a club hopping globe trotting party kitten. At least that's the impression one will take away from her new single and video for "Wake Up."

The song, which was written by Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, has Duff putting on her make up and trying to make things happen on a Saturday night, waxing party-ific about cruising Hollywood/Vine or heading off to NYC, London, Paris and Tokyo.

The video was directed by Marc Webb, who has helmed videos for the likes My Chemical Romance, Hot Hot Heat, Jesse McCartney, Yellowcard and the Used. It was filmed in Toronto during the summer and was produced by the Hollywood based commercial and music video production powerhouse DNA.

Today's crop of Hollywood young'uns is shaping up to have a business acumen unlike any generation before it.
"We've seen an increase in young celebrities that control their own media empires," says Amy Barnett, managing editor at Teen People. The mag's young readers "understand that true Hollywood power is not just being a great artist. It's being a creative force."

Teen People hits stands Friday with its second annual Young Hollywood issue, and Ashton Kutcher, 27, tops the mag's first reader-selected Power List. Not only did Kutcher have a successful film this year (Guess Who) and TV hit (That '70s Show), but his production company, Katalyst Films, is behind MTV's Punk'd and WB's Beauty and the Geek. "Ashton's high score proves that he can not only open a movie, but he is also producing a successful TV show and he's developing another one." (Related gallery: Peruse Teen People's power list)

Other young performers on the list:

• Hilary Duff (No. 4) has a multimillion-dollar accessories line called Stuff by Hilary Duff.

• Nick Cannon (No. 10) created Mr. Renaissance Entertainment, a production company. The 24-year-old produced, wrote and stars in next month's film Underclassman, which follows last month's premiere of his new MTV show, Nick Cannon PresentsWild'n Out.

Young performers are recognizing that there is a serious business involved with their artistry, say experts. "They're much more responsible than they have ever been," says Scott Feinstein, an L.A.-based business manager who counts Duff, 19, among his clients. He says these youths "realize that they haven't been making money that long, and they know (the income) can be short-lived. Still, does it surprise me when a 19-year-old says, 'What percent of my money went to taxes last year?' Yes."

But the list of other young celebrity entrepreneurs extends beyond Teen People's top 10.

• Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, 19, took over their $300-plus-million-dollar empire when they turned 18.

• Singer Usher, 26, launched Camp New Look last month in Atlanta, which focuses on passing along the business side of the entertainment industry to the next generation of up-and-comers.

The Grammy-winning Usher, who is co-owner of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers, is passionate about this business trend, says Shawn Wilson, executive director of the non-profit camp. "He feels it's important that we embrace it for the next generation. ... Beyond passing along musical and dancing skills, Usher wants to pass on the business side to these kids, whether they make it as an artist or not."

Hilary Duff appeared on WAM today for a special music interview about her new Album 'Most Wanted' when she was asked about her new 'thin' figure. Hilary said the following...

"Well im not anorexic and I dont have an eating disorder like some tabloids keep printing. Its ridiculous! But I have decided to give up certain foods because they were giving me really bad pores and my body fat was getting out of control.

"My sister told me to stop eating doritos and gummi bears because They were bad for my health and they made me tired and stressed out. Ive also decided to give up fatty foods like pasta and pizza because of it. Ive been touring alot and all that energy has given me a much better figure. I admit I am much thinner. But I like my new look. So it has all paid off."

Hilary Duff is being singled out by PETA — for its seal of approval. While the animal-rights activist group usually targets those celebs who don't meet its strict standards (think Jennifer Lopez), this time, PETA has found one who does, because the manufacturer of Duff's cosmetics line, Stuff by Hilary Duff, has just signed a statement of assurance promising it does not test products on animals.

Duff & Madden Go Public With Relationship
Hilary Duff, Joel Madden Go Public With Lovestyle Of The Rich And Famous
Pop princess confirms rumors, hopes relationship doesn't overshadow work.

A huge gossip vacuum has suddenly been filled now that it's clear Hilary Duff and Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden are, in fact, an item.

They've been denying it for a while, of course - even as they've been collaborating on the pop princess's new album, Most Wanted, and been spotted swanning around in public together. Madden told MTV Asia several months ago that it was hard figuring out their relationship, which he characterized as friendship, amid all the media scrutiny (see "Good Charlotte Strive To Be Punk-Rock Outkast; Joel Says Marriage Comment A Joke"). But when Madden accompanied Duff during a visit to MTV last week and called her "baby" in front of a camera crew, well, the jig was up. So Duff, as her song says, had to come clean.

"I'm really happy right now," she said. "I think and hope he is as well. I feel really lucky to have him, but we try not to talk about it too much. We both think it's so weird that people put their relationship out there. It's not even about the work anymore. It's not about music or acting or whatever. It's about the relationship. It's not really what I got into this business for, and I know it's not what he got into it for, so why? We both have this same mentality that the more you let people know about it, the more they want to know about it."

But while the couple may want to take the Beyoncé/Jay-Z route, Duff can't help but sing Madden's praises. She said she has grown "so much" as a person and an artist thanks to her association with him and his twin brother, Benji (see "Cheaper By The Duo? Hilary Duff Teams Up With Madden Brothers For New LP"). Duff views them as "an inspiration" because they work hard, believe in themselves, and don't "let anyone control them." Duff's been dealing with this particular issue as she grows into adulthood. She was "feeling really controlled," she said, and was trying to figure out how to bust loose. Working with Madden without first informing her label was one such step. "Joel told me stories about scaring people into not messing with them. I can't do that," she laughed. "Look at me. I'm a little blond girl. But they can."

She also admires Joel's talent, claiming he has the ability to whip out a song, "even as a joke," in 10 minutes flat. "I learned so much more about music," she gushed. "Joel has totally changed my taste in music, friendships and loyalty. He's changed me and my friendships."

Duff hopes this particular friendship won't become tabloid fodder. "I'm pretty absent from a lot of what goes on," she said. "It's a choice. When you're a young person in the public eye, it's a real easy one. I go to clubs, but there's a front door and a back door, and it's how you want to be seen. A lot of people complain, but you don't have to [make your private life public] if you don't want to."

Still, the are-they-or-aren't-they nature of their relationship long gave people enough to gossip about even if she didn't want them to, especially since Duff is only 17 while Madden is 26. Many speculated this was the reason they were keeping it quiet: Duff is underage for another two months.

"Everything you do is talked about, picked apart, put on a little perch, or trashed," she said. "There's so much controversy over so much, even if it's not scandalous, even about what you're wearing. People make so many comments; it's hard to deal with. I'm just trying to figure out who I am."

Normal" is a tag Hilary Duff seems comfortable assigning herself.

It's how the 17-year-old pop megastar humbly describes her looks, her dreams and the logic behind her widespread appeal. She sees herself as a relatable, everyday teen who doesn't need to expose flesh or stir scandal to land magazine covers.

Instead, Duff does it with her coy grins and sprightly comments, swapping cattiness for courtesy, and always saying "thank you."

"I think if you look at a lot of people, people who are in my same age range that do the same things I do, I'm the more normal-looking one of them, like my body and the way people perceive me," Duff said on a phone interview three days after her "Still Most Wanted" tour kicked off July 12 in Los Angeles.

"There's so much pressure to look a certain way, but there should be no pressure to grow up, or to be 90 pounds. I think you should embrace all your flaws and insecurities."

Just hours before the launch of her "Wake Up" video on MTV's "Total Request Live," Duff gushed about her recent studio and cinema exploits, and confessed her yearning for a little more "me time." With her sped-up speech and elf-like giggles, she was as pert as anyone could hope to be at 8:30 a.m.

"We've only had three shows on the tour so far, so I'm not allowed to get exhausted yet," Duff said with a laugh.

Surely that will change once the 33-city tour, which comes to the Germain Arena in Estero on Thursday, is further underway.

Showcasing older hits such as "So Yesterday," "Come Clean" and "Fly," Duff may also opt to perform some new tunes from her "Most Wanted" CD. The Columbia Records album, in stores Aug. 16, contains three unreleased songs, several remixed and remastered favorites, as well as a deluxe edition with bonus materials.

"All of the songs have, like, a really different feel to them; one song is really pop, and the other ones are a little more rock," Duff said. "I'm so excited about all of them."

Three days after Duff's travels halt at the final tour venue in Puyallup, Wash., on Sept. 25, she will have another cause for excitement: The Libra turns 18.

So much has occurred in the past decade for the 5-foot-4-inch dancer-turned-actress/singer who began her career in the Cechetti Ballet.

She has transitioned from the Disney TV series "Lizzie McGuire" to movies such as "A Cinderella Story," "Raise Your Voice" and this year's "The Perfect Man." Shooting just just wrapped for "Material Girls," a "dramedy" co-starring Duff's 20-year-old sister Haylie.

"I think that was my favorite movie to work on. We play spoiled rich girls who learn their lesson in the end," Duff said.

"When I pick a role, I just try and take myself out of it and bring to it what I think the character is like, whether it is that she has a lot of confidence or if she's shy. I think I always want to do things that have a moral to them."

The collaboration hits theaters next year, along with Duff's two other projects: "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" and "Foodfight!"

Somehow, during pauses between stage and screen, Duff completed an online correspondence course in environmental science through the Harvard University Extension School.

"I graduated two years ago from high school, just 'cause I was home-schooled for so long (10 years), so I got all my work done really fast," said Duff, who lugs her laptop on the road. "When I was done, I was like, 'This is so great! I never have to do school again!'

"I don't even think I'm interested in getting a degree, really. I just wanted to learn something outside of the industry."

"Fashion tycoon" is also on Duff's résumé. She has her own Target clothing line "Stuff by Hilary Duff," and plans to pioneer an animal subset called "Little Dog Duff" named after her late pet.

While skating between genres is Duff's forte -- and fans laud every move -- the sport doesn't always sit well with critics.

"Once I got my TV show, it was really hard to get support from radio stations to play my music. Everyone just kind of made a joke about it. So many people did it before me, but I was one of the first young people to do both acting and singing," Duff said.

"People say rude comments about it, and of course, it bothers you. It's like they're saying, 'You can't knit and play golf.' I try not to even read stuff anymore."

Her focus is elsewhere, whether trekking the country or lounging in her Los Angeles home with her sister, mother/movie producer Susan and their five dogs.

She even spends the occasional few minutes updating her online diary at her official fan site.

duff.com. Ten years from now, Duff hopes the fans who helped catalyze her celebrity will still be cheering.

"That's getting old, 10 years. I'll be 28 almost. Maybe I'll have a family by then," Duff said. "Maybe I'll try something else. I'll try to have a little more time for myself. I'm t so slammed lately.

"I want to keep doing the same thing that I'm doing. Hopefully, I'll continue doing things that make me happy."

Driving down Friendly Avenue the other night with a good friend, I caught a glimpse of how devoted pop princess Hilary Duff's fan base can be. The conversation went something like this:

Me: "So I'm interviewing Hilary Duff this week."
Nineteen-year-old boy: "REALLY?!?"
Me: "Um ... yeah."
Nineteen: "When you talk to her on the phone, can I be on the line and just not say anything?"

Strange as it is, the attention Duff's girl-next-door image has garnered her from the 18- to 24-year-old male set is telling of her success. From her starring role on Disney's television series "Lizzy McGuire" to a handful of movies to three bubble-gummy pop albums, Duff is an emerging triple-threat moneymaking machine.

The 17-year-old has shared film credits with Steve Martin in "Cheaper By the Dozen" and Heather Locklear in this summer's "The Perfect Man." And even though her singing career started with a Christmas collection — something most artists don't tackle until their twilight years — her next record, 2003's "Metamorphosis," sold upwards of three million copies.

By maintaining a relatively squeaky-clean image, Duff has separated herself from a pack of look-alike Disney darlings. With pre-adolescent tweens as her most loyal followers, mothers across the country have praised the teen as something of a pop-icon role model.

And outside of a much-publicized spat with Lindsay Lohan and murmurs of her romance with 26-year-old Good Charlotte leadman Joel Madden, Duff has steered clear of the tabloid bonanza that has snared some of her peers.

Tonight at 7:30, the pop star will perform at Winston-Salem's Lawrence Joel Coliseum to promote her new — and according to most critics, laughably premature — greatest hits collection, "Most Wanted."

Duff talked (fast) to the News & Record about the tour, her future and how to stay out of The National Enquirer:

What will the concert in Winston be like?

"It's called the 'Most Wanted' tour, which was my first tour. It has the same name, but the show is totally different. There's this whole laser-light show and the technology used is incredible. It's a lot of dancing and high-energy stuff but nothing choreographed."

How has the tour gone so far?

"We're at the beginning, I think we've done 10 shows so far … the beginning is always awesome, everyone is pumped up to be on the road again. It's just a blast, it's instant gratification with the fans being there."

What sets you apart from other young female pop stars? How is your image different?

"Everybody has their own thing going on. People seem to stick girls together if they have the same hair color. That's a misconception. I'm more of the less scandalous. My music is pop, but my show is a rockingtype thing. I'm not a big party girl."

Is it hard to maintain a clean image?

"I think it's a lifestyle. It's either you want that or you don't. There are ways to avoid it — obviously some people choose to and some people choose not to.

"I'm not saying it's not invasive. There are paparazzi waiting outside of my house, sometimes like three guys at a time that take shifts.

"But, it's like embarassing to be on the cover with 'You hooked up with this person or now you didn't hook up with this person and oh, now you have coke on your nose.'

"It's always so scandalous … there's no focus on the career."

The new record, 'Most Wanted,' has been billed as a greatest hits collection. Is that what it is?

"No, it's like a collection, like my favorite songs. The reason we did it was to kick off the tour, to get people to hear new music and a new sound."

Who makes up your fan base?

"I don't think people really give me the credit for the different age range that come to my shows, because I'm there and I get to see it. We have, like, 4-year-olds, 8- to 15-year-olds, and there'll always be a big group of, like, Slipknot fans or crazy Rancid fans ... I think they're gonna beat me up until the concert starts and they know all the lyrics to the songs."

What do you think of the press attention you've gotten from being seen with Joel Madden?

"I don't like it — I don't want to make a speculation out of my relationship.

"That's not my job. I'm an actress and I'm a singer. You definitely won't see any reality shows with us anytime soon."

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

"I hope doing the same thing. I really love it, if people will let me continue.

"Hopefully I'll get to take more time between projects, I kind of go from one thing to another now. Maybe I'll have a family. I'll be 28, which is when most people start having families."

Pop star HILARY DUFF has hit back at cruel students who taunted her plans to take online classes at Harvard University.

The 17-year-old SO YESTERDAY singer was desperate to become better educated but didn't have time to sign up for a proper university course.

But some mean students took exception to their absent celebrity scholar and poked fun at her in campus newspaper THE CRIMSON.

She says, "They wrote that Hilary Duff is a loser and a chicken for taking online classes, because she didn't want to take the prerequisites to get accepted.

"First of all, I have a full-time job. Second, I would like to know if the thousands of other people taking online classes are chicken too, or just me?"

Thx: www.oh-hilary.com

Hilary Duff is banning confetti use from all of her future concerts, after learning it's bad for the environment during one of her online classes.

During her environmental science class on Harvard online the So Yesterday singer learned that the use of excess paper has a negative impact on nature - and she's already changing her ways.

She tells Mtv News, "It's so weird now how much I conserve. I turn the lights out, and no more confetti, because that's not recyclable. I did the math for the amount we used, multiplied by 36 shows? We don't need it."

While the teen star is struggling to juggle her busy schedule and read 50 pages of work three times a week, Duff - who has also learned about the ozone layer and waste management, enthuses, "It's so fun!"

Duff's Schedule Can Be Stressful, But She Loves It

Going out on a 30-city cross-country tour is actually considered somewhat of a respite in Hilary Duff's world.

"I get more sleep on the road than when I'm doing a movie," the teen star said during a recent phone interview from New York City. "I miss being away from the people I love but it's cool to get out of L.A. and see the country."

Duff spoke during an off-day from her "Still Most Wanted Tour" that visits the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence Sunday and the Hartford Civic Center Monday. She was in New York to appear on MTV's "Total Request Live" where she discussed among other things Eminem rapping about her butt in his song "A** Like That."

"Hilary Duff is not quite old enough/So I ain't never seen a butt like that/Maybe next year I'll say a**," Eminem raps in his single "A** Like That," which is about the behinds of several female stars.

"I never knew the exact words to that, but it's funny," Duff said on MTV.

It's a not-so-surprising response from Duff, who lives up to her reputation of being extremely nice and personable during the phone interview. She admits to feeling "rude" when she can't remember the names of crew people working on the set of one of her movies, and when the cell phone she calls from cuts out, she quickly calls back and apologizes.

She's not one to instigate or flare-up controversy, even though much has been made in the Hollywood press about the supposed feud between Duff and fellow multi-dimensional teen star Lindsay Lohan. Duff would rather just do what she does and leave the negative aspects and remarks to others.

In her new single "Wake Up," Duff touches on being the subject of tabloid gossip. The song's opening lyrics are "There's people talking/They talk about me/They know my name/They think they know everything/But they don't know anything about me."

Duff co-wrote the song, one of three new tracks that will appear on her CD "Most Wanted," which will be released in August. While the promotional material for the album calls it a compilation of Duff's greatest hits, Duff said it isn't a greatest hits CD.

"It's more like giving people a taste of what the tour will be like," Duff, 17, said. "It's getting people to hear the music to a different sound ... We remixed some of the songs so they sound totally different. It's really energetic."

"Wake Up" represents a more mature sounding Duff singing to stronger pop beats. The music may be the influence of her boyfriend Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. Madden worked with Duff on the three new tracks recorded for "Most Wanted."

The new album and tour are just part of what's been a usual busy year for Duff. She spent the first half of 2005 promoting the film "A Perfect Man," shooting "Cheaper By The Dozen 2" and "Material Girls" and working on the new songs.

Duff's career began with an appearance in the 1997 TV movie "True Women." She gained Hollywood celebrity status playing the title character in the Disney television show "Lizzie McGuire."

The show ran from 2001-2003. Since 2001, Duff has worked on 11 films, three of which have yet to be released, and recorded and released three albums with "Most Wanted" being her fourth CD in four years.

It's a full work load for anyone, but especially for someone who isn't old enough to vote yet.

"(Burn out) is a big concern," Duff said. "I went from promoting the movie to promoting the tour. It really seems never ending. It can be hard and stressful but I love it and that's why I do it.

"There's a concern about pushing yourself too hard. That's why when I get sick, I'm sick for like three weeks at a time. We try to keep a strong medicine bag on the tour bus."

Duff added to her list of duties when she signed on to co-host the 2005 Teen Choice Awards with Rob Schneider. The ceremony will be held Aug. 16.

Duff has been a Teen Choice Award winner in the past. She soon will be facing the same question all young stars face; will her fans stay with her as she grows older and continues to do different projects?

It's something Duff doesn't have to worry about just yet.

"There are so many pages to fill, you don't know what comes next," Duff said. "I know what I'm doing for the next four months, after that I don't think about it. Whatever is going to happen, hopefully fans will continue to support me with whatever I'm doing at the time ... If you listen and worry too much about what people say you can drive yourself crazy. I just want to live and experience things as they happen and hopefully not make too many mistakes."

Hey guys, here is an entry from Joel Madden's online blog. I thought it was super interesting, check it out. It is for July 24th!

wow kids i had quite an interesting day of press. i had an interview today with my favorite VJ from much music. i actually enjoy her interviews, cause she usually askes the most intelligent intersting questions about our music, and well today, she asked me one of the wierdest dumbest questions ever. she asked me if i liked my girlfriends teeth? at what point does a credible journalist like that go "what did i just say?" i wonder if she felt stupid or embarassed afterwards? we are at a show, talking about music and fashion and fans and all that good stuff, and bam she hits me with that. i wonder if she was thinking "what the f*ck did i just say" like the question just slipped out like a fart. haha. its wierd how journalist and radio dj's and television people get away with saying the dumbest sh*t. no one ever calls them on it. like they can criticize people all day long, but no one ever notices the dumb sh*t they say. i really hope next time we talk she sticks to the music. she is still my favorite VJ. knowing much, they will probally put this sh*t on tv. haha.

Girls' Night Out: Hilary Duff's Young Fans Enjoy Show

GRAND RAPIDS -- It was a night for a little parenting leeway.

Daughters wore Barbie-pink lipstick. Hair was curled, pinned and decorated with star-shaped sparkles and streamers. Girls of single-digit age wore rhinestone- encrusted shirts.

Moms -- and dads, too -- gave up a quiet evening at home to endure a throng of young girls (boys, too) screaming for the bubbly TV, movie and music star Hilary Duff on Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena.

Duff's devoted Disney fans flocked to merchandise counters. Morgan Warnaar, 6, and with her friend, Madison Ring, 9, both from Schoolcraft, bought the same shirt, happy to be sporting the singer's image.
Morgan was looking forward to hearing Duff sing her favorite song, "Coming Clear." Madison was excited to be at the concert of her favorite TV star.

"I mostly won't watch anything (on TV) except for her," Madison said of Duff, who starred on the Disney Channel's "Lizzie McGuire" and was featured in the films "A Cinderella Story" and "Raise Your Voice."

Buying memory-making merchandise for their daughters was just one way moms made the night special. Traveling from Holland for the concert were five mothers, all friends, who brought their daughters to their first concert.

"That was the most fun -- to see them," Stacie VanKampen said of her dancing daughter, Hanna, and the youngster's four friends -- Angela Rosendahl, 9, Taylor Bareman, 10, Rachel Voetberg, 10, and Kailey Vandeburg, 11.

"I didn't know my daughter could dance like that," Vicki Rosendahl said of daughter, Angela, hoping never to see those "moves" again.

Hilary Duff's Intimacy Issue: Stage Fright In Reverse

Singer can perform easily in front of huge crowds, but shies away from one-on-one situations.

Hilary Duff claims to suffer from a kind of reverse stage fright: She has no problem performing in front of thousands of people, yet she can't deal with one-on-one situations, especially those that involve songwriting.

"It's so funny. I have friends, and even a sister, who can write a song and then go, 'Mom, I wrote a song,' or 'Hilary, listen to this,' " she said. "I don't know how they can do that. I could never write a full song and let people hear it."

Duff's intimacy issue extends to her stage shows. She prefers large, anonymous crowds — the bigger, the better. "It's easier to play a big show than something more intimate," she said. "There's something more comforting about seeing a whole sea of people with glow sticks going crazy than being able to identify people I know out of a crowd of 200"
Duff said she has no problem talking to people she knows, and she's become accustomed to dealing with fans. "But put me in a situation with people my age who I don't know ..." She stopped, as though the prospect were too horrifying to contemplate. She insists she's fine around friends, however. "I am friendly," she said. "I love to talk and tell stories and be loud and goof off." She just doesn't let everyone see that side of her immediately, which makes it hard for her to open up as a songwriter.

"People criticize you so much, and writing about your feelings, what's going on with you, is such a personal thing," she said. "But it's much easier to write it down than to sit and talk about it."

Strangely, Duff's less shy when it comes to writing a song with someone she doesn't know. Even though she just recorded three new songs with boyfriend Joel Madden from Good Charlotte for Most Wanted, her best-of album due out August 16, she worries that "just going into the studio and recording with people you're close to and who care about you" could "mess up" the process. "For the first single, I would only let [Joel's twin brother] Benji be in the room," she said. "He's a really funny guy. He's so nice and makes you feel comfortable. He makes me laugh," she said, describing how he would mock her fear of criticism by shouting, "That sucked. Do it again!"

While she's a long way away from conquering her shyness, Duff considers herself a more confident performer today than when she started, and she gives her fans credit for boosting her self-esteem. "To play to 12,000 people every single night — and all these people came for you?" she asked rhetorically. "They wait in the freezing cold just to wave goodbye to the tour bus. So why not go out there and give them the best of you?"

Hilary Duff Pleases Crowd And Parents

At about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, the audience at the Roanoke Civic Center - made up largely of tweenage girls waving glow sticks - resembled a swarm of fireflies. And they fluttered in anticipation of Hilary Duff.

After a three-minute countdown on the stage's two Jumbotrons, Duff appeared. With her slender frame, box office-friendly face and a red-and-white striped shirt, she brought to mind a supermodel version of the "Where's Waldo" character. But supported by green lasers, three backup singers and a five-piece band, she was pop music glitz.
At 17, Duff's media assault has made her a multimillionaire. She can count successes on the big and small screens, and with a cosmetic and clothing line. She has had two multiplatinum albums, and it's likely that her upcoming "Most Wanted" album will go the same way.

The only foreseeable bump in her ascension to true rock stardom is that she has yet to upset parents.

"We thought she seemed really nice," said Debbie Wright of Lexington. Wright had brought her two daughters, ages 9 and 13, to the show and waited for them on a couch in the parents lounge. She added, "Of course, we thought that of Britney Spears."

For now, pleasing parents and their daughters is what Duff's show has been about. Friday's song list covered crushes, taking chances and "believing in yourself" (a number of songs being prefaced with a note on theme). Her songs are polished, rock-twinged pop, with choruses that the audience can join in on.

Rock critics who wanted to fault Duff's music could find enough material in her heavily produced sound, well-worked themes or appearances on the Disney Channel. But all their ink could not have drowned the screamers at the civic center on Friday. Hilary Duff might never be important or influential, but she probably always will be likable.

She opened her Roanoke show with the bouncy "Wake Up," which led into the rockier "The Getaway" and "Do You Want Me?" The kinetic pace slowed down with the ballads "Hide Away" and "Cry," when glow sticks became impromptu lighters. She hit dancy numbers such as "Party Up" and the requisite sample of songs on her new album.

The night closed with a three-song encore, which included her new single, "So Yesterday." The show could be the template for all pop concerts: smooth, fascinating and closely timed.

Shortly before the 10 o'clock curfew, the show ended, the lights went up and the glow sticks disappeared.'

Joel Madden, in his online blog on the Good Charlotte website, made a plug for the songs he and his brother Benji wrote and produced for Joel's girlfriend Hilary Duff. In his July 20th entry, Joel writes: "I'm trying to think of any new music I want you guys to check out. Well of course you could check out the songs we produced for Hilary. That sh** sounds great. I'm serious. Her best work yet. I love pop music, but most of the time there is always something wrong with it. Like the lyrics are too cheesy, or the music is to overdone or just something is off. The Dead Executive stuff we did with Hilary is right on it. It's like the perfect mix of 80's new wave and dance. I cant stop listening to it. So you kids look out for that, you'll be surprised, gonna be bobbin your little heads to miss Hilary Duff." In the next entry in his blog, he affirms his status with the teen queen with a little shout out writing "and I gotta say hi to HILARY<3."  A few days later on his blog while talking about movies he says, "oh yeah speaking of movies, if you kids haven't gone to see the perfect man yet, do me a favor. i appreciate it."

Remember the concert review I posted Hilary's first concert? It was mentioned that Hilary did the entir show wearing only one outfit. Here is the reason.

Pop star Hilary Duff was forced to scrap a series of costume changes as she launched her latest US tour in Los Angeles on Tuesday night because the outfits didn't turn up for the show. Hilary was devastated when she realised she'd have to perform to fans at the Greek Theater wearing just one outfit.

She says, "My wardrobe just didn't arrive." Duff did make one costume change of sorts - she ditched her knee-high boots midway through her set and performed the rest of the show barefoot.

By the sound of the screams, the sold-out crowd of mostly young girls apparently didn't care what Duff was wearing, only that she was singing.

Thx: ww.hilarynet.org

Hilary kicked things off Tuesday night at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre. She was wearing just one outfit through the whole concert. Click on 'Read More* to read MTV's review of it. By the way, you can still buy tickets for her concerts from her official site hilaryduff.com

[HERE]

LOS ANGELES — Multicolored strobe lights, beams and lasers illuminated the makeshift disco stage at the sold-out Greek Theatre on Tuesday for the opening night of Hilary Duff's Still Most Wanted Tour. Packed with Duff fans big and small, the venue became a sea of green glow sticks, which were waved frantically by preteen fans minutes before the young pop star was slated to appear, in hopes of speeding up her entrance.

As an electronic blue board on the side of the stage counted down the seconds to zero, a slightly slimmer and more mature-looking Duff burst onto the stage with her opening number, "Wake Up," the first single and one of three new tracks off her forthcoming hits LP, Most Wanted, in stores August 16 (see "Cheaper By The Duo? Hilary Duff Teams Up With Madden Brothers For New LP"). She wore a short, black lace spaghetti-strap boho-chic dress; tan knee-high boots (which she ditched halfway through her hour-long set); and chunky jewelry, including a green-and-gold necklace and wooden bangle bracelets. (It was Duff's one and only outfit the entire evening, which was due to a wardrobe snafu — she said to MTV News just minutes before taking the stage that her other outfits had yet to arrive.)

Duff breezed through old favorites like "Come Clean" and "Hide Away" from her two multiplatinum albums, 2003's Metamorphosis and her self-titled 2004 sophomore studio disc, respectively, before segueing into some fresh material.

"This song is brand new and you guys are going to be the first to hear it," Duff said, premiering a second new track, "Beat of My Heart." For the third and final new tune, "Break My Heart," a black screen flashed the words "hate," "love," "pain," "pleasure," "hope" and "trust."

"Now you're through with me, I don't know what to do with me," Duff crooned, as she took a seat onstage near her drummer. "Why don't you break my heart and watch me fall apart ... look what you did to me, you got the best of me."

Duff quickly exited, and re-emerged minutes later through the center of the stage, barefoot and energized, bounding about as she tackled the upbeat tune "Rock This World" in front of a screen with a pixilated rotating globe.

"Hey, Los Angeles, stand up! I don't care how old you are — get up!" Duff cried out. As she shifted into "Fly," the stage was soon engulfed in blue and green laser lights that darted into the screaming crowd. Finally, the singer brought the young concertgoers to their feet as she introduced "So Yesterday," one of the obvious crowd favorites of the evening.

"You guys have to sing along to this! No excuses!" she said. "I know you know this!" The throng of fans did not disappoint, shouting the lyrics in unison along with their perky hero.

"Thank you guys so much for coming to my show," Duff told the crowd as the evening started to wind down. "Do you guys want to hear more? Actually, I don't think you guys have been loud enough for me to do more, and you might have to convince my band, 'cause I can't play the instruments by myself." As she was met by an exuberant reply, the singer finally caved to the antsy mob, and closed out her show with a more rocking, albeit lesser-known tune, "Girl Can Rock" from 2004's "A Cinderella Story."

Duff proceeded to exit the stage with her full band in tow, leaving fans waiting, demanding, and outright expecting an encore from their idol, but it never came.

Sorry, kids, not this evening, because as any savvy performer knows, you always have to leave people wanting more.

Duff Gets a Hole in Her EarDrum

Tween queen Hilary Duff has had a hole poked in her eardrum, as a result of illness from flying around the United States more than a bird. The 17-year-old has been flying in and out of varied (as in hot or cold) climates, which had left her with a terrible cold.

"I've been travelling a lot. I was in New York and I went to (Washington) DC and then coming back (to Los Angeles)," she says. "The weather there's really hot and humid and then I got on the plane and I couldn't even breathe or talk and I had to get a needle poked through my eardrum so it would relieved pressure because I have to fly at like six o'clock in the morning. Not exciting. I've had a very adventurous day."

Hilary tops #54 on this year's Forbes Celebrity 100 list of famous people, as in the people who make the most money and attract the most public attention. The list is made by the estimated earnings of celebs, how many magazine covers they graze and how often they are mentioned in the media. Oprah Winfrey hit #1, Lindsay Lohan #52 and the Olsen Twins at #35.

It is supposedly said that Hilary's new album, Most Wanted, will come out six days before its release date in the U.S in Japan. This is also similar to Hilary's latest album, Hilary Duff, coming out ten days before. So, Most Wanted will supposedly come out on August 10th in Japan, along with a different name: All Hits Single Collection Hilary Duff New Limited Edition Greatest Hits Cd.

Bubblegum pop star Hilary Duff has finally admitted that she is, in fact, dating Joel Madden of the pop punk group Good Charlotte. The couple began seeing each other last year when she was only 16. Contact Music reports that the pair's first public appearance will be at the MTV Video Music Awards in August on the verge of Hilary's 18th birthday. Because of statutory rape laws, the couple has kept their relationship quiet; Madden is nearly nine years older than Duff. Hilary said of her beau, "Compared to any young Hollywood-actor dude, Joel is so normal. He's not a partier. He's not a crazy rock star. He doesn't trash his room. And I like the way he looks, obviously. You see them on stage and it's pretty hot. As a good and honest girl he helps me explore the flip side of myself, the darker side."
