In 1991, at a church camp, Ben Moody, and Amy Lee, co-founders of Evanescence, met for the first time. Ben, who was at the gym, watching a basket ball game, at the time, heard someone playing Meatloaf’s “I would do anything for love” on a piano. He ran straight over to the piano, and saw Amy playing on it. He introduced himself straight away and then Amy showed him some of the songs she had written, and then she sang for him. He was amazed at how beautiful and powerful her voice was.

They then established the band “Evanescence” and began writing songs together; the first song they ever wrote together was “Solitude” which is about feeling invisible to someone you love. "I live through you, you looked through me." Ben wrote their 4th song “My Immortal” which has become a major hit for the band; he was 15 when he wrote it.

In January 1999, their debut EP (the Evanescence EP) was realized. There was only ever 100 copies made.  And in August 1999 they realized the Whisper/Sound Asleep EP, of which only 50 copies where made.

Three new editions to the band where made then, Will Boyd on bass, John LeCompt on guitar and Rocky Gray on drums.

Evanescence then recorded their first album, Origin, with Big-Wig record label. Though only 2500 copies were made and the band decided to use it as a demo to send to big record labels.

Wind-up Records then signed them. Evanescence went to Los Angeles to record their album Fallen, with producer Dave Fortman. Fallen was released worldwide, in March 2003 and consists of 11 songs, including the huge hit Bring me too life which reached number one in the UK and the top ten in the US.

Fallen has sold 12 million copies worldwide and has been nominated for many awards including “Album of the Year” and “Rock album of the year”

Since then, Ben Moody has left Evanescence, because of numerous disagreements between him and Amy. His replacement is Terry Balsamo, formerly of the band Cold.

During 2004 Evanescence were nominated for five Grammy awards-Album of the year, best new artist, best rock album, best rock song, with Bring me too life and Best hard rock performance. They won two-Best new artist and Best hard Rock Performance.

In November 2004, Evanescence realized a DVD/CD combination ,of their concert in Paris, called  Anywhere but home, which included the concert as well as back-stage footage.
