The stars shine like jewels

I’ve dreamt of living forever
For most of my time
As a small child

Before I went to school
What’s the point of dying
And leaving this existence

Not to see the world again
“Mum,” I said one day
“I don’t want to die”

She said life was hard
Who wants to live forever?
On looking at the stars

Stretching throughout the cosmos
I wanted life to go on
Uninterrupted by death

I wished to live
In a lasting universe
Left alone by illness

Death and all
This is my story
And my life

As it’s a simple notion
