England have received some good news ahead of the forthcomming World Cup in Belgium. Allan Collins and Barry Ryder have been included in the Individual Veterans event and Jonathan Bryan and Dimitris Stemitosous have been included in the Under 15's.

FISTF have announced the final placings for the World Cup and all the above have been promoted from the reserve list of players for the individual event to the full draw itself.  This now means they'll be playing on both days which is excellent news for the squad and the country.

Phil Redman added the English Masters title this weekend to his victory in the National Championships, when he beat Bob Varney in the final of the inaugural competition in Market Harborough.

The England captain won 2-0 on shots, after a cagey match had finished level at 1-1 after overtime.

Congratulations Phil.

NEWS 18/07/05

The UK & Ireland championships proved again to be one of the most enjoyable weekends on the Subbuteo calender this year.   The pleasing thing about this event was the opportunity to select a squad that handed debuts to 3 excellent players from the circuit.  Dave Russell, Paul Lawrenson & John Brand have been around the block a few times, but this was their first opportunity to show what they could do in the England team – None of them disappointed.

Saturday saw what everyone felt was the warm up before the team event.  The individual competition gave all competitors a good chance to get some games under their belt.  A long day saw Dave Pawsey overcome Phil Redman on shots in one semi final, with Dave Russell victorious over Scotland’s Garath Christie to ensure an all England final the following day.

On Sunday, the England team, looking the part in their England tops, overcame both the home nation and their neighbours from Northern Ireland 4-0. We followed this up with 3-0 and 3-1 victories over the Welsh & Scots to take the title.  Special mention goes to the new lads who showed little nerves in bringing the shield back to England, the team spirit showed was evident and helped to make for a great weekend’s Subbuteo.  Gary & John Moore from Ireland ensured we were all well looked after, and Tram Co in Dublin provided a great venue, cheap food and excellent service.

On a final note, congratulations to Dave Russell who finished the weekend in style by overcoming Dave Pawsey on shots in a tense but entertaining final.  This weekend shows the strength in depth we have in England, which can only bode well for the future of the sport in this country.

Phil Redman - England Captain

'The latest addition to the England World Cup squad is Matt Lampitt in the U19 category.  The only category that has not yet been finalised is the U15.  However, the ESTFA Board is very confident that it will have a full complement in this category, too, shortly.'

Thanks

'The ESTFA is pleased to announce its decision to support our young players who will be representing England at this season's World Cup in Belgium by paying for their England shirts for the tournament.  We feel that this gesture will be welcomed by all the playing fraternity and is in line with the ESTFA's desire to support young players in England as much as it can.

On a more general note about England kit.  All England players will be expected to wear the current (05-07) England home shirt.  If you do not have the shirt, please do not buy it yet as we will be able to get them at a discount.'

                       FLICK TO KICK

The first major exhibition of its kind in the UK will cover the unique story of Subbuteo from its origins in Royal Tunbridge Wells to the international phenomenon it is today.

Flick to Kick will open to the public on Friday 8 July and will run until Sunday 4 September.  It will feature:

  • the button from Woolworths that inspired the game
  • the original and very rare models for the Subbuteo Beatles set
  • Subbuteo football sets and figures from 1947 to 2005
  • Subbuteo Cricket, Rugby and even Angling
  • Falco Subbuteo: The story behind the name Subbuteo
  • Peter Adolph – the inventors story
  • stories from the people who made it and the people who played it

Visitors to the exhibition will be encouraged to re-live their memories by playing a game of Subbuteo on one of our special pitches and over 14s can take part in a special tournament on Sunday 4 September.  In addition all visitors will be able to enjoy a series of special displays including Peter Adolph the Ornithologist, and The History of Football in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Although tournaments are being held for the public, the museum has pointed out to the ESTFA that they are really intended for lapsed players that haven’t played for years rather than for the ‘professionals’ in the ESTFA.  However, the museum would be delighted to see members of the ESTFA and we are hoping to send representatives down for the final weekend to put on demonstration matches and talk to the public about the sport of table football.

ENGLAND SQUAD ANNOUNCED FOR 2005 UK AND IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIPS:-

Here are the names of the players in the England squad for the UK & Ireland Championships being held in Dublin July 2nd/3rd:-

Phil Redman (Captain)
John Brand
Paul Lawrenson
Dave Pawsey
David Russell

Statement from England Captain Phil Redman:-

'I am pleased to announce the following team for the UK & Ireland Internationals in July.  The squad has been selected with a view to putting forward a strong and capable team to defend England's title won at the National Football Museum in Preston last year.  It is particularly pleasing to be able to select a number of players for their England debut - not only is this a reward for their excellent performances throughout the season, but should serve as an incentive to other members of the ESTFA that England places are within their reach at future events.

I have been impressed with many performances throughout the season from U15s up to the veterans.  Members of all ages were considered during the selection process, unfortunately only 5 could be selected.  These 5 players have the full backing of the Board and, I would suspect, all fair minded players within the Association.'

Phil Redman

Statement from ESTFA Chairman Chris Wrigley:-

'On behalf of the Board I would like to congratulate the players that have been selected to represent England in the forthcoming UK & Ireland Internationals.  Phil has picked a strong squad of players, all of whom have been impressive on the circuit this season and I am sure that they will do a great job for the ESTFA in Dublin in July.  Best wishes for the tournament to all of you.'

2004-2005 English National Championships

Despite a number of 'missing' players, the first national championships for some years was a huge success.  As expected, the National Football Museum hosted the event impeccably and the tournament was played in a very competitive yet sporting mood.

Seeding was based on current positions in the STF table, and not all the seeds made it past the first hurdle, Algy Taylor being perhaps the most notable faller.  In the last 16, returnee Paul Marks pushed eventual finalist Chris Wrigley all the way, with the match going to shots, whilst the highlight of the quarter finals had to be the match between Alan Collins and Mike Parnaby.  Finishing 2-2 at full time, it took an excellent golden goal from Mike to take the tie.  Meanwhile, Phil Redman was quietly but effectively making his way to the final wthout conceding a goal in the knockout stage.

Phil Redman eventually met Chris Wrigley in the final.  Nobody can remember the last time that this match produced more than one goal, and so it was that when Chris hit the post then Phil scored just before half time this was effectively the end of the game.

Congratulations to Phil who deservedly won on the day and who can now claim his automatic place in the England Open sqaud for Belgium.

Congratulations also to Sam Curtis who won the decider in the Youth tournament against a strong Anthony Collins and Algy Taylor for picking up the Plate.

All the results can be found in the Events/Results section.
